Where to find a damsel ID?

We aquired what we were told was a damsel from a friend who's breaking down her tank. I don't have a pic of it, but I'm not sure where to begin looking for an ID for her. She has a light yellow stripe down her dorsal fin, is a opal ****e color, with blue and black ventral fins. If I can get a pic I will, but if someone could direct me to an damsel ID page, that would help too.

Thanks!!!

It may take a while, but you will probably find your fish in fishbase. To help narrow things down a bit, look under 'search by family' and scroll down to Pomacentridae and go to pictures.

Sounds sort of like this guy,

That's her!!!. It looks just like the one we just got. Any info on how to care for her and what she can and can't be around?

Gets big ugly and aggresive.

Agreed. The specific name 'melas' literally means 'black.' They get large, a dark to black coloration, and very aggressive.

So, my best bet would to be to get her out of my reef?

We are getting ready to convert our 210 into a reef. Could we put her in quarantine until the 210 is ready. Would she do better in there than in the 75 she's in now?

Unless you plan on having it a long time, I would just get rid of it by giving it to an LFS or someone who would want it. If you still want it, just be sure to accommodate for all the aforementioned factors.

My stupid butt put him in the 75 before asking questions. He ended up killing our Midas Blenny and terrorized everyone else (he kept them from eating) for three days before we moved all the rocks and caught him. I cannot believe I was so stupid!! Learned my lesson though and will never add a fish until I know exactly its temperment and what it will do to my other fish.

Thanks for all the input. I wish I had asked before doing the stupid thing of putting him in the tank.

I guess the good news is that now that the devil damsel is out of the 75, we purchased a convict blenny (really an eel relative). He is so cute and I cannot wait to watch him grow. Thanks for everything guys!
