Nice pic Fishfinder and Artik :)

Those of you that are wondering about collecting technique may want to check out FAMA magazine. Most issues have a feature called the Dip Netter. Often times the article will explain how the author collected that months specimen.

Do you have any links to FAMA?

Nice haul mate.
"pseudo net" (for royal dottybacks and assessors).
Do you work the 65' net alone, or do you buddy up to get the YTs in it?
30'-35' is my longest net (solo). 5' drop.

What is psuedo net?
I have worked the 65' alone but its much better with a partner. The weight of the net is too much to carry long distances and it is almost usless any deeper than 75' of diving. Thats when I use my smaller nets. Whats a YT?

I think a 30'-35' net is a good size. Good for most depths. Do you make them yourself or do you have a manufacturer?

Do you have any pics of the fish you catch?

YT-Yellow tang

I buy the nets through a friend of mine who buys them premade from somewhere in Hawaii, them come premade with rubber floats, and lead weights across the bottom.
I'll try to track down their details.

Pseudo net is a very stiff, fine net that holds its shape. eg in a permanant sock.
It is the only way to catch the fish that live on the cave roofs. You hold it against the top of the roof, and the sock runs all the way along the top of the cave. Herd the fish with the wand, and as soon as they are in the sock, pull down on the net. They try to dart into the cave roof, but hit the net instead, as they are in it without realising.

I unfortunately do not have any current photos, as I'm in a reconstruction process. I'll try dig up some old ones.

Very interesting. I have a hell of a time catching cave dwellers. I dont know if I could use that to get the specimens I am targeting though. Are the fish you catch this way "dumb", you know easy to catch compared to others.

I wouldn't necessarily call them the hardest fish to catch, however, they are not dumb.
You'll only get one shot, then you gotta move on.
Which cave dwellers are you having a hard time with?

Mostly anthias (bicolor) and potters angel (only the one in caves, not in rubble). We dont have as much in Hawaii as yall got down under.
How does the winter season effect diving? I know winter is quite mild for us (in exception of this last one). We had 43 days of straight storm weather. Not too many went diving.
Do you do deep dives?
What is a typical day of work? example- We usually go out with 2-3 divers and do 4-6 tanks. Starting at about 35m, progressing shallower into approx. 20m by the end of the day.

You could probably get the potters using mirrors, then cover the cave with nets when they come out.
Also squirting air in helps get angels out.
Winter is great for us, no cyclones. Wind is our enemy here. We copped 3 cyclones this year. Water is only now getting clear again.

We try avoid deep dives, most stuff we get in 20m or less. We only go deeper for specifics, eg longnose hawks, some anthias, starcki damsels, multibar angels etc. All the bread and butter stuff is usually in 0-15m.

Our daily run is usually 2 4hr dives (we are on hookah), deco fish overnight, do a coral/rock stockpile in the morning then shoot home and unload.
We get a lot of stuff on snorkel in the morning. triggers, juv tangs, choats wrasse, lime wrasse, orange tail damsels, sharks, chromis, shrimp etc etc.

Wow! how big of a boat are yall diving? I dive a 19ft and I would never sleep in that thing.
Well if yall ever need a diver I will pack all my nets and diving gear and fly down. I would like to travel there to collect some deep water specimens this winter (summer for you), would you take fish as payment for gas for the boat? I would really like to catch some stuff at 90m or so.

As for deco overnight, what do you hold them in? We use small buckets clipped to our waist, and for that reason they would be way more stressed hanging on the line all night.

I just usually use a plastic jar and heard the fish into it. Or a slurp gun. The slurp gun almost feels like your cheating. But you can only catch smaller fish with it. I have caught doctorfish tangs, hi-hats, file fish, damsels, coral banded shrimp, and some other fish with a slurp gun.

90m! You're nuts:D
I've dived 50-60m in Christmas Island (IO) catching joculators, and that was bad enough.
We work from a 30' shark cat, twin 250hp on the back.
Will probably be changing for a 55' inboard diesel soon though.

I'll dive in Hawaii, then you come and dive here. Like an exchange program:bum:

Fish are caught in buckets too, we then containerise all the fish (read time consuming here) in individual jars, the place them in 200l olive barrels which are suspended off the side.
Some fish (eg chromis) are gang packed though. No way I containerising 2000 chromis individually a night!

Wow now thats a boat. No thats a Yacht.

For real man. If you want to dive in Hawaii I will put you up, give you gear, and you can come dive with us. No BS. You are more than welcome to stay at my place all you got to do is show some catching secrets! If you ever make it here, hit me up.

You want to do man diving come to NY.
Our visability goes from about zero to the most 4 feet. I did quite a bit of diving in Hawaii, very nice.
Last week here the visability approached 6".
Have a great day.
