Who says a nem can't be happy enough to split in a nano?

I woke up this morning and to my surprise my nem had split. Not to long ago there was an arugement that nems could not be happy enough to split in a 12g nano. So I stopped posting because in truth, i did not know. Well, now I do! My healthy, happy nem split in my nano last night. So here are the before and after pics.

Yay now I have two!!

They look great! May I ask what lighting you have them under? I going to upgrade my 14g lights soon and want something I can keep nems under just in case I decide to go against what everyone else thinks and buy one.

BTAs (( E. quadricolor )) can/will split because of stress. Splitting can be an indication of the anemone doing well enough that it will have extra "energy" to split, or it can be cause of the anemone is in less then ideal conditions and it uses any "energy" that is had to split, in hopes that the clone will be able to find better conditions.

With the positions of your BTA(s) I am going to say it is the later case, with both of them on the back wall (( or side )) of the tank right at the water surface is an indication of them trying to get as high as possible to get more light, they normally are found on/in the rocks.

How you take this information is up to you.

BTW, we didn't argue that they couldn't be happy enough to split in a small tank, in fact I probably would have bet that they would have split for reasons Toddrtrex mentioned.
I'm not even bagging on you for doing this, I merely cautioned others that you were recommending to try it also.
Alot of new people see this, and think it's a good idea.
After years of reading on this forum, I can tell you about 90% of the time(and probably even more than that) it doesn't work out, and usually final result is a melted nem, nem stuck in an intake, and maybe a nuked tank.

I am using the lights that came standard on the JBJ 12g nano DX which is 2 12w 50/50 PCs. And everything does wonderful!

Wow! 24w of PC over a 12? AND an anenome?

Thats how it came, its a stock JBJ nano Deluxe. I had another anemone in my tank which was attached to a rock and it out grew the tank! So if it was grow it couldn't have been doing too bad. But whatever you decide to do just know that you can keep one in a nano, yet some people do frown upon it.

The stock lighting for the JBJ 12g DX is 2 x 24W 50/50 PC's...Still far from ideal but I can see it working as the tank is so shallow and the bulbs are right on the surface of the water. I would be more worried about water quality than lighting at this point.

All in all, I would agree with the splitting from stress theory, It's not normal for them to attach to the wall, they like rock to hide their foot.

One actually just attached to the rock! And I test my water regularly. Everything is where it should be as far as quality goes. Again I know that it is frowned upon, but hey, it is what it is. If they seem to be doing horrible (which they don't) I can always give them a new home in my boyfriends 240g. His also sometimes attach to the wall and they are definately not stressed!

Thanks for backing me up. I have been thinking about upgrading the lights on my tank but there are so many choices. Did it make a huge difference in your tank? Everything is growing in my tank and fish are doing great! Do think it could disrupt my tank? And do you think your nems split due to stress?

i think it can be done. the nems in his pics look healthy. and yes they might want more light so they crawl up the back wall but there still healthy. i think you should upgrade your light. they will do better that way. good luck with it.

Toddrtrex is right & you have quite a bio load with the fish alone IMO. 5 fish in a 12gal even with gobies would attribute to your nem stressing. P.S. JBJ = Just Bought Junk

wow i don't think dave and todd are bashing you and anything can be done by anyone they are simply stating fact by example after all 50000 elvis fans can't be wrong your nems look fine but 12 gal is an awfully small system for such a potentially big animal

I don't think anyone is bashing you. It may seem like that because you already know your pushing the limits of your tank. In all reality everyone is wanting to help you keep a successful tank without the big crash that's waiting to happen with a big bio load. ;)

It certainly can be done; mine splits regularly, but I have a 70w MH added to my 2 x 36w JBJ Nano Cube 24.

How did you upgrade? Was it a jbj upgrade or a homemade one?
I'm curious because I have the same tank, do you have a picture of what it looks like with the upgrade?
