Wierd Tank

I visited my Mother N Law today in a nursing home and I have always noticed this tank there. It is about 300 gallons, has some koi that must be about 5lbs each, a huge alligator catfish about 14" long, giant dino's, African Cichlids all swimming around a plastic coral reef.

not a bad mix really-large sizes and colors and movement for folks with diminishing eyesight, plus some conversation items like the catfish. Looks clean and healthy. Now would I recommend such a mix? No, but I am not going to tell someone doing something with success it cannot be done!

I thionk I would have put in some rocks rather than coral and the African Cichlids don't belong there. But you are correct, they need large fish

My wife has worked in a Nursing Home for about 35 years. Siblings donate everything from aquariums, to cats, to dogs all the time. Maybe someone donated a saltwater tank, and when there loved one passed there was no one to take care of the saltwater so they changed it and filled it up with FW and Fish that maybe another ones siblings donated?

It is nice and clean.
I've mixed a few goldfish up with tropical fish during my freshwater days...

They do fine.
The cichlids and goldfish mix is definitely an interesting combo though.

The only way to make it better would be to had a Diver Dan bubbler.

Looks like the tank is over crowded, but well maintained.

Weird? I'll tell you weird.

There's this one guy that puts beer cans and bottles in his tank. Talk about weird...:eek2:

The real wonder is that the koi aren't eating the cichlids. They must be quite well fed.

not likely in a big tank for a well fed koi to eat the cichlids. Depending on the fish of course! I used to keep jewel cichlids in with full adult oscars, who could have eaten them at any time. The fact the jewels were so agressive kept them from being a food source. Koi by nature are veggie eaters, wheras goldfish are more likely to eat other fish. I would be more suprised the pleco doesnt get sucked on by the koi- or vice versus.
