Wild and Maricultured SPS Reefers Thread

Some new bits i got two weeks ago settling in after the usual slice and dice with a dremel.......

Here's a wild piece I picked up from an LFS. Didn't know what to expect considering the first major SPS pieces I got into were Maricultured and died within days in my old Nuvo. Now I've got 2 growing like crazy!

Thanks man! It died after getting hit by an aptasia... I saved a tip so maybe I will get it to grow again.

Here is a few more of mine now that the new tank has stabilized.

New growth finally on this Aussie spath. Seems to be pinkish tips on the new growth too. Very pleased!

Wild Aussie piece I saved off a colony that was rtning at a local store. Love the blue in the base, it also gets blue in the tips with the right light.

This coral is a wild one I have been growing out over and over. It gets a nice yellow in the branches with a green base and beautiful blue tips. Not sure the species but in my tank it grows tightly with thin short branches, it grew so tightly last time I couldn't frag more than a 1" tip.
My two abroad are in the pic also, which I am having trouble with. I think they are starting to turn around now that my lighting is up to par

nice. Nothing more exciting than new arrivals!
I see the copper band is already inspecting them..
do you bathe, treat, dip them in anything before adding them to the tank and if so, what is your routine?

That's a nice score nice size and color on them.. Did you pick them up locally to you or mail order?

I've been tempted to get a large Aussie order of brownies for dirt cheap from a wholesaler who has a special every few months and see what comes of it. With all these pictures in this thread I should score a few keepers..

The few wild frags I've gotten from friends colonies to keep back ups are doing well in my tank even when colonies have died in other tanks, they Just take longer to acclimate than all my aquacultured/named pieces..

yes I did treat them with coral RX in 15 minute baths three times over 90 minutes. I dip in coral RX for 15 minutes then in clean tank water for 15 minutes. I also use a magnifier glass and inspect the sps and plugs and base of the corals. If I see eggs or aefw the sps will never make it into the tank, I dont even frag it i just say sorry and put it in the garbage.

I know some people say that's crazy and wrong but I just cant live with placing sps in my tank knowing they had aefw on them. Also its really just a $30 matriculated piece so to me its not worth it,
I really take my time and is worth the extra effort. I can say I didn't get any pest but i sure do take precautions as best as I can.

I have other friends that use coral RX as well and it seems to work very well. I at on time did use revive and that also worked well but I needed some and the local store ran out and told me to try coral RX and i never went back. Then I know a couple others that use bayer and it works well but most if the time the sps get fried and never recover.

I don't know if its to strong or the plug absorbs the bayer solution and leaches back into the main display and around the freshly dip acro and kills it. Just my thoughts and this is why i haven't used it all but one time and will never use it again.

Hope this helps....also i know what its like to want to get everything into the tank but with all the aefw going around we really need to watch what we do.

Here is a couple of my wild frag successes. Both frags were purchased in 2009. I still have both corals today.

First up, an Aussie acro. This one changed quite a bit, colored up fairly quick and has held the current color ever since.

This next one took a trip to brown town for about a couple years. I had room so I just left it be. I think it was worth the wait. It is the one on the left.
