wind storm/ power outage 2017

Huge power outage in Rochester and westward starting Wednesday. Some folks are still without power- and it's been COLD!
I suppose if one was affected by this storm the last thing they'd want to do is come on RC and talk about it. I hope everyone is well!

Survived ~30 hours without power, luckily the Ecotech Battery Backup's work great running two mp10's during that time (and still having 3/4 power left after 30 hours if you believe the powerhead's meters). Tank was 63F when power was restored but all fish and coral are fine.

Hope everyone else made it through alright too!

glad you survived.. i have 2 business in rochester and another in batavia that lost internet thankfully no power loss :)

Still waiting for my system to return to temperature. We lost power for a little over 3 days. Tank got down to 61... Fish seem OK though. Only confirmed loss? My Neptune Apex... It seems to have had the controller die. Apex "Classic" (now at least). In the process of figuring out whether I will DIY a controller, replace this one, or get the new model. Oh well.

Glad everyone is ok. I see the forecast is calling for another storm starting Monday night? Can we just be done with winter already!

I heard 7-10 inches... it was originally supposed to miss us. Oh well, I have the generator on hand now.

Check with Neptune They fixed mine for like $150

We were out for a total of 54 hours and the generator we borrowed wasn't handling both the fridge and tank items. Tank got down to 71 and I lost one chromis. Luckily Phil let me bring everything else into his shop as a couple of my acro were starting to rtn. Now I need to test the water so I can bring all my babies back home! :)

Mel you are so lucky to have that as an option! Kudos to Phil! Now lets hope everything makes a full recovery.

one two punch = nor'easter chaser

one two punch = nor'easter chaser

Still some people without power from last week's storm and we have another weather event moving in. Depending on which weather service you want to believe, certain areas around Rochester could get up to 16"-20" through Wednesday night.
I hope everyone gets through this with minimal pain!
Back in the 60's and 70's FEBRUARY was the most feared month.
Since the early 90's MARCH has clearly taken the trophy.

74 hours without power here. Luckily I have a Champion 3500w generator. It was enough to keep the Tank heaters and powerheads going. I was also able to keep my freezer and refrigerator plugged in and cold. Had to use a kerosene heater for house heat.

Next time I want to have a larger generator that I can hook up to the main panel. That way I don't need extension cords strung throughout the house. Getting around in the dark was "interesting" Looking to upgrade to the Westinghouse 7000w generator and add a transfer switch to the main panel. That ought to do it nicely.

I'm surprised to hear the ecotech battery backups lasted that long. My tank has a 2000va battery backup that runs the heaters and two Jeabo power heads. It lasts about an hour and a half before I need to find an alternate power source. I might have to convince the wife that it's worth getting one.

Anybody using a DIY UPS? Thinking about making one as a way to use the deep-cycle battery we store in the winter for our camper. There are articles out there but curious about some local experience(s).

My DIY controller is progressing. Have some parts ordered and the (really rough) code in place. No ability to change variables yet (everything is hard-coded) but it will have a web server so I plan on making that available in the future.

Drive home for lunch was uhhh.... interesting. Lots of people who have forgotten how to drive in the snow were sliding through intersections and others with less than ideal tires were stuck on hills. Not a single plow in sight the entire adventure but it occurs to me that many of these plow drivers may have already been working extensive hours on wind storm cleanup duty for their respective towns... poor guys.

Hope all of you remain safe and warm the next couple of days! Spring must be right around the corner now right?!? :)

Mel, i saw your corals there. I also had to lean on the coral dudes to hold my corals as i lost power for a few days and went into panic mode.... lesson learned on having a generator!

Now we have this snow, has any one lost power? knocking on wood.

No power loss so far here in the Binghamton area. But we have 30 plus inches so far in less then 17 hours. Everything still good. Hope everyone else is getting along as well.

The ecotech battery backup only has a 18 ah battery- it is nothing special, you can make a far better one for a fraction of the price. Yours only last 1.5 hours because of the heaters. You don't really need the heaters on that time scale
