10' Pond Build

Awesome tank, love the aquascaping you did! Very clean and simplistic look. Now you need a underwater drone you can take pictures with!

There is a drone that floats on top of the water that has a camera that tilts 180 degrees... Can't remember the name of it but when I do I will post it here

Would you say the pool is any less/more maintenance than with your average tank? It seems like pond/pool type setups always seem a lot simpler (1000g+) than that of a glass tank of the same size

This is by far the lowest maintenance system I've ever kept. I think that a big part of it is not having to constantly scrape algae off of glass/acrylic. Aside from regular maintenance on equipment (cleaning the skimmer, removing salt creep from pipes, etc...), the biggest chore is doing water changes (200 gallons monthly). Granted, most of my fish are still small and I have a relatively light bio-load. I do have a few fish that have the potential to get quite large.

Dude, amazing setup, really love it.

My wife would catch me floating facedown in that thing constantly.

Thank you! Haha! I haven't done any floating yet, but I am in the beginning stages of building a rum bar on the side of the basement opposite the pool. Hopefully this will not lead to any late night swim sessions.

Thanks! I appreciate the compliment on the aquascaping! I actually added an additional 100 lbs of LR today to bulk up the "atoll" and to give the fish some more places to hide and feel secure. Seems like the more places they have to hide, the more they stay out in the open. 100 lbs seems like a good amount of rock, but it really didn't make much of a visual difference. The grazers seemed to appreciate having new rock to pick at though!

An underwater drone/camera does seem like a fun idea. Let me know if you come up with the name/make of the one you mentioned.

Forgot to mention my pair of Gomphosus varius in my stock list. Both started out female, but the larger of the two started making the transition to male shortly after the second (smaller) one was added.

Idk if this is a great idea but you got me thinking about a bar what if you made like a swim up bar and had the stools In the pool so while your drinking the fish can come up to you and stuff, also you could use the stools as suppors for cool lr structures

I bet 100lbs doesn't look like much at all in that beast. Here is the link to the drone with video of it in action.

Lol, my ex would have put me face down in it for the long term!

My new soon to be wife, would hop herself in butt*ss naked and frolic in it on hot days

Heat has actually been staying spot on with the room temp at 73 degrees and 3 300W aquarium heaters in the sump. I do like the idea of having something like you just mentioned as a back up though. In the event that I lost power for an extended period of time during the winter, using gas/hot water for a heat source as back up would definitely be worth the effort/investment.

It would certainly save you a few bucks as gas heating is much cheaper than electric. You can also just use pex as a heat exchanger instead of titanium. Unfortunately if the power goes out, neither of them will do you much good since you would have to power the pump.
Either way, it is a beautiful setup!

Wow! Sounds like something you would find at a resort... I think I'm going to stick with keeping people OUT of the pool ;)

This is too cool! Speedy little thing, and much less $ than I would have expected. I would imagine my fish would find it pretty unsettling, and may need a few therapy sessions afterward. Beer can holder is a nice touch too!

They would find it unsettling at first but you could get some great pictures and video of your fish with it. Plus if you leave your beer on the other side of the pool you can drive it over to you

That awesome I love how the fish just stay in the protection of the rock horseshoe structure that is funny. My angels would love that setup.

Might be a dump question, but is this a setup in which you could add some corals? Or does the nature of reef keeping (flow, coral placement etc) appear to be against the nature of a build like this?

Moriarty: ever think about using a electric motor boat with a gopro strapped to the bottom of it to video your fish?

I really hadn't put much thought into doing something with an underwater camera, but some of these posts are making me start to think...
