47G SPS...Revamp

Hi Sahin,
I have been following your reef tanks in the last years and it can be my mistake or you prefer a bunch of light over your tank.
I´m saying this because when you go to 100% LEDS you will notice a much lesser extent of light and it gives you the idea from your eyes that you have low PAR since the LEDs are directional unlike MH and T5 wich spreading enough light giving us the idea that fills our tank entirely.

Another point is what the markalot said,

"When viewing from the front the colors will fade, from the top colors can look quite nice."

This indeed happens and however much you try to put more open lens etc, you will never get it because the LED does not allow you to spread the light to cover everything.

In my experience with LEDS, I used the 3 lumia multichip 5.1 and when i started the DIY project I really thought I would only use LEDs in the new tank , well after a few months, and despite having sufficient PAR, the shadows that LEDS generated over the tank not seduced me at all, I even took the lenses away and yet the result was not what i liked best. ... when I turned on four T5 tubes over my tank to complement the LEDS, it looks like i had opened the day inside the aquarium !!! The difference was huge.

With this, I´m not saying that the LEDs do not work, quite the contrary, but seeing your old aquariums seems to me that 100% LEDS will not going to convince you and when you put T5 to complement your LED unit you will see what I told you!!

Hey!! don't get me wrong...this is just my 2 cents
I hope that the change goes well, I'm curious to see the differences and your feedback ;)

One thing is for sure your corals are not going to just brown and die. It simply won't happen because of leds, that would be due to water conditions.
You will still have beautiful colorful acros no doubt. What I want to see is if someone with such a keen eye and attention to detail and wanting the absolute best will see enough of a difference that you want to go back.
Obviously the no bulb changes, heat, etc will be nice, but I know someone like you wouldn't mind dealing with those if you can tell a notable difference.

I'm excited to see the results of the conversion in the hands of a capable reefer. Good luck!

Appreciate your input. My friend's tank is roughly similar sized to mine (but a little longer (41inches, my tank is 30inches long)). We placed his 3 Radions over a suitable span to cover a 30inch length and I had a look at the light levels as well as measuring the PAR levels with the sensor facing up at the lights as well as facing the front glass.

Visually it looked bright and the PAR levels falling on the upper surface (around 600+) and sides (100+) of corals were fine. I chose the Radions because there is two pucks and placed parallel over the tank they ought to cover well.

We shall see what happens in the coming months. :)

I just saw something that made me happy for you...an imply that you'll upgrade! That's enough for me buddy:beer:
Yes buddy. :D Upgrade is in the future. But not before we move out of our current place and I have determined which lighting techonology I will be using.

Best of luck with your lighting experiment. It will be fun and interesting following along.

And possible upgrade?? Excellent! What size/dimensions are you thinking

Hi Sahin! Good luck with the change. I started with LEDs but quickly switched to t5 once I became sps focused. I used crap LEDs and my results were...well...terrible.

Sahin, one thing i´m sure...you choose one of the best LED units in the market!
Yes, I believe so too.

Thanks. New tank is dependant on what lighting I go with eventually. If LED then it will be 4x2x1.5H. If I'm not happy with LED's it will be a 93G cube with 400w Radium.

Well, to all my online reefkeeping friends:

Satin, No one but you would think, not even Biggles, to put 3 LED lights over your tank. I think you took care of any shadowing problems. Be careful in the transition. I wish you all the luck.

Marty

Hi Sahin,
Most people turn back to T5 from LEDs, but you are going to LED.
Why?
I read about LED on advanced aquarist .
Did you see these tpoics?

Interesting what do you think about LED light.

I gave many reasons over the past couple of pages; however, to summarise:
1. I've seen a few LED tanks with very good colours.
2. Success or failure, I want to see for myself. It's part of the learning aspect of this hobby for me.
3. The results of this experiment will determine the lighting on my next tank.

Haha, yeah I wanted to reduce the shadowing as much as possible.

Merry Xmas buddy!

Keep up the great work next year

Thanks buddy. Happy New Years to you.

Sahin , I have been thinking of doing this for months now , and hope to have Radion pros by summer. Top Shelf Aquatics in Orlando Fl. run radion pros ONLY over their display tank . Colors are amazing ! I would check with them to on getting their lighting schedule .

:lolspin:

I know...I know...seems crazy...but I've seen good results with LED's...I need to know for myself. I consider myself to be adequately skilled with SPS keeping to at least give LED's a respectable run. I have over 40 SPS in my tank, most of which are Acropora; if LED's are not good enough for SPS corals then I expect my acros to brown out. I promise I will post up the brown coral photos.

You are talking about Alex Barreto right? I've already sent him a message on FB, but no reply yet. Top Shelf Aquatics have amazing colours.

Do you know what the filtration and setup is like?

Sending you a pm!
Don't worry it's not a complaint letter :)

Reply sent. :)

Hello sahin ...

Hope you Christmas was good with lot of gifts to you aquarium.

I run my Radions from APEX so I don't have the etg file ... I can send you my graph from apex if you want.

How are the two surprises you have in your tank? Mine came out completely brown and now has amazing blue tips ...

All the best,
Rui

I know the display is like 400 gallons , and has just 10 Radion gen3 pros:lol: hanging about 20" above waterline. I know they dose two part and I never looked at sump. Last time I was there was the day after Thanksgiving you could hardly get in the store. Alex is a busy guy plus he is setting up a 300 at his house now. Don't give up on him ! I will be down that way soon I will get filtration and maybe the top secret lighting info.
