Actinic shots!

Amazing! Wish I could take good photos. Coral look very health and stunning. Congrats

Now those are actinic shots! Very nice!

Really sweet shots. When will the book be published? JP

Thanks y'all! Some corals are looking better than others. Hopefully the "others" will come around with more time.

what lighting are you using?

This tank is lit with a 250w 20k Radium SE and 36" VHO UL Super Actinics. Only the actinics on in the pictures above.

Just amazing!!!! Can you tell me what reflectors and ballast you use? Sorry for so many questions. I'm setting up a new tank and after spending a lot of money on expensive LEDs the last time I'm thinking about going back to mh.

:) Thank you very much for the compliments. Fun to share!!

Definitely old school lighting over the Envision, I like it a lot!

The MH is a single Lumen Bright 3 SE (large) reflector mounted so the bulb is 17" off the water, per this article: http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-06/review/ The ballast is a Lumentek electronic ballast running the bulb on the "HQI" setting.

I tried JPorter's M80 ballast, which I think drives the Radium to the proper wattage. I think the M80 are better ballasts but I was having other issues with my tank at the time I was trying it so I reverted back to the "original" equipment to see if I could figure out what went wrong by process of elimination.

The VHOs are run on an ARO ballast/endcaps.

Since your coming from LEDs, I should probably mention that I have another tank plumbed into the Envision and there's a MaxSpect Razor over it. I get better color from LPS under that light but worse color (generally speaking) and growth on the SPS (I have duplicates in both so I can compare).

Cheers,
Z

Oh, and I should mention that the Malibu Favia really does have those speckles in it under actinics -- it's not noise from the camera. Really cool and I didn't really notice it until putting it under the macro lens.

Your pictures are awesome Kataro. But I'd gladly shoot your tank(s?) -- you have an incredible collection!!
