anyone tried to using Jebo WP40?

I know one company has gotten a cease and desist order from Tunze to stop selling it.

Where did you get this info?

The reason Chinese knockoffs exist in the first place is that most product developers dont get international patents because they are hard to enforce.

If its true, lawyers aren't even going to buy them time, much less succeed in protecting their market share. Chinese manufactures laugh at patents and American lawyers. Even if they closed every domestic reseller, there will be huge group buys and online orders. (like the 230 units in the Phx buy). That's pragmatic reality. Principle is harder. I very much dislike the fact that Chinese reverse engineer and rip off intellectual property (I don't know that that's been done here).
I have more than $300 in livestock, and I'm more than happy to roll some dice on this, and I think everyone acknowledges it is a roll of dice.
I want waves and $450 vs. 50 to $100 is saving more than "a few bucks." Up till now, I just did without, hoping something like this would come along. We're a few months into this and things look very good. People have Apex controlling them, and Reef Angel already has solutions that run them beautifully with no diy hack needed. I'd expect a lot more DOAs and failures going on for something like this made in China. It just hasn't materialized yet.
No doubt these pumps are going to fail, and they may fail twice as fast as the competition with no warranty recourse or very little. The problem for Ecotech/Tunze is that, a very large number of people are concluding that if they can even get 1 year out of the pump, its worth it and everything else is bonus. I'm not going to pay $350 more so I can send it back in, when I can pay $50-$100 for a new one and have parts pumps on hand. I'm sure the Ecotech/Tunze is better built, and better performing, and they stand behind their product. If they were $50-$90 more than Jebao, I'd have a hard decision.
Unless these pumps start leaching nasty stuff and killing tanks, Ecotech and Tunze have a serious problem. I, for one, am curious how they'll approach it! Maybe we start seeing little American and German flag decals for the tank. (joking) But if the wp pumps hold up pretty well over the next year, I think they're going to have to drop price, innovate, and adapt the business model.

So my wp40 came in monday. I have it in a bucket of water with bit of vinegar and after about 2-3 hours the water turned brown/red. I contacted the supports on fish-street and they had no idea what was wrong with it. At first i thought the impeller was rusting but the fish-street support said the impeller was made out of materials that won't rust... not sure if that is true. Anyone have any idea why the water is turning brown/red? Maybe I have the first defected wp40

It's because they were made in a factory that has Chinese drywall! :eek2::spin2::lol2:

Seriously though, I don't like the issues that brings up in my mind. Something leaching out of the plastic? Maybe a coating coming off the plastic from the manufacturing process? Did the pump change color at all?

the housing is still the same colour. The leaching seems to intensify with the vinegar/water mixture than just pure tap water. Could it be possible that the impeller is reacting to the vinegar? I've noticed a hole in the impeller housing but it looks like it's suppose to be there. Its been running in a 5 gallon bucket for 2 days now. Been changing water whenever the water in the bucket gets too brown/red.

Check the magnet that will go against the glass. That is one of my worries.

That piece seems fine. I picked up the wrong vinegar from the supermarket. (Heinz pickling vinegar) Will that make a difference?

Here is a picture of the water. Clean water on left and brown/red water with powerhead in it.

I got an e-mail from the company that was selling them on their sight.
They were basically asking me to help them get rid of the stock they had.

I would rather not mention any names.

You don't need to give name but is this a US company selling in USA? What about LFSs? There are many of them now selling from their stores.

Vinegar is an acid maybe pickling vinegar is stronger. I ruined a k4 by soaking it in a strong vinegar solution for a few days. The vinegar ate the coating off the windings In the pump causing stray voltage. I am much more careful with vinegar now.

Yes it is a US company selling in the US as well as outside. Mainly doing web sales.

If they are selling Tunze besides Jebao, I can understand that. Tunze probably threatened them with loss of dealership. This is a similar scenario when Chinese LEDs first came on the market. I could only order my Maxspect from Hong Kong and paid $120 just for shipping in 2010. There were talks of patent violation and many US retailers would not sell them. Now all major US retailers like BRS and Premium Aquatics are selling them. So it is just a matter of time.

Everyone raves and jumps on the bandwagon for new cheap knockoff products that have nly been out for a few months. I on the otherhand will let these be the beta testers and wait another year until i purchase one. I hope they withstand the time test, but so far it isnt looking too pretty

Congratulations, you're this month's Negative Nancy.
