ASM Skimmer Club!

You don't really have to take much, it really helps to have an airflow meter so you can see the gains and not just guess. I just used one size larger drill bit than would fit in the air line fitting and drilled it out.

I haven't ever taken too much out yet, just go slow and be careful. This mod is much more productive than the mesh mod, and easier.

Yea, having a meter would be nice... I dremeled mine similar to your example, but with no meter, it's hard to tell if it made any difference. I left the air intake alone because it looks fragile.

Instead of using only mesh this time around, I used the pin wheel and put one layer of enkamat into the pin wheel. So far, it doesn't look as effective as two layers of enkamat with no pin wheel.

trying to figure out how to do the recirc and mesh mod to a g2 and g4 all links i have found are broken can anyone point me in the right direction? thanks

Hello everyone!! I have an ASM 4Gx but do not have the tank to support such a skimmer. I am looking for an ASM MiniG or an ASM G1. If any of you have one for sale please get in touch with me. Thanks

What size drill bit did you use here?

Okay another question: the housing that covers the pin wheel impeller and attaches the venturi to the pump is called the volute?

I saw a pic of a volute on a sedra pump and the output hole looked very small. Is there someway to enlarge this? I have a G3 and I'm looking to redo the equipment layout in my cabinet. I might switch the Sedra 5000 I'm using now to a Sedra 3500 but don't want to lose flow (recirc mod). Are there any mods to do this?

Not sure why you'd want to downsize from a Sedra 5000 to a Sedra 3500. The stock G3 came with a Sedra 5000. I believe that downsizing to a 3500 on a G3 would decrease the production of the skimmer.

I was looking to increase my G2 from a Sedra 3500 to a 5000 about a year ago, but couldn't determine if it would fit in my sump and on the skimmer. So, I just got another Sedra 3500 and ported it as described above and drilled the air tube. I connected a flow meter to it today and it seams to be pulling between 15 to 20 SCFH.

I'm now considering a Sicce PSK-2500, my friends 2500 pulls 35 to 40 SCFH. He uses the WM Red Demon impeller. I read some reviews on a website that sells the pump and some of the people say they used them on a G2 and it worked great. Maybe look into that pump.

Can a Oceanrunner 2000 be any good on a G2. I have also an Atman 2200, which one is better. Has anybody modded a Oceanrunners or Atman to mesh wheel?

Space is a major consideration here. The Sedra 3500 will give me an inch that will make all the difference. The G2 comes stock with a 3500 and has the same diameter reaction chamber as the G3. So it's it's not so much as a downsize in pumps as it is a switch to a different model ASM.

This is incredible! Pulling that much air? What skimmer did he have it on?

I just got a cone but I was running a Tunze Hydrofoamer recirced on my G2 and it pulled more junk than the Sedra 3500 ever did. Some of the thickest nastiest crud.

Hey guys!

I am setting up a 250 gallon FOWLR and have been skimmer shopping.

I ran an ASM G4XX on my previous 210 gallon reef and it worked well. Never did any mods to it.

Do you think the G4XX would be sufficient for a medium stocked 250 FOWLR with 100 gallon fuge?

Would you mod it or run it stock? What mods are worth doing? It comes with the sedra 15000 pump... I've also been considering an SWCX300. Any advice?

thanks!

gate valve simply makes it easier to adjust right? My sump will not let the water level vary in the skimmer section so would it be worth the time doing the mod?

And do you think this is a good skimmer for the size tank I have?

I dont know about the tank size but the gate valve is very easy to do and only cost about $14 in parts if you ever want to adjust it will be easier also you can put the exhaust pipe after the gate valve to end under water therefore making it quiter instead of the splashing you may hear with just the stock stand pipe.

Oh, I see, your setting up a 250 fowlr.

What do you plan on keeping?

Havent got that far yet =0)

Some Tangs, Triggers, an Angel... Maybe an Eel or Puffer but haven't decided. Just planning for a heavy bioload so I will be ready for whatever. I have made up my mind on the skimmer. I will buy the ASM G4XX and if it ever seems to be not cutting it I will upgrade at that time. It fits the budget and will free up some cash so I can buy an OM4way. It's gonna take some good time to stock the tank properly so I've got time on my side.

No one has an opinion to the size tank this skimmer will really handle?
