ASM Skimmer Club!

Dropped sump level 2 inches (~5 gallons of water) and the riser completely down, seems to be working... Will update later when I have more questions....

Even after removing another 2 inches\5 gallons it still overflowed so I pulled the gate valve.... Let's see how it goes

Mine goes down farther. There is an o-ring in there that can come out of the groove and bind, preventing it from sliding down farther. You have to pull the tube all the way out to fix the o-ring. I use a little silicone lube to keep mine in shape. The tube on mine goes down all but maybe an inch and a half or a little less.

It is on mine, but mine was made recirculating by ASM so I don't know they modded it from a stock one. But it stands to reason the pipe on yours should go lower, it is the height adjustment and should move freely most of the way. I have had the o-ring in mine come out of the track and bind up while cleaning it, so I would check that first. That o-ring resides in the nut at top of the stationary part, if it con's out of its groove it can prevent the tube from going farther down.

The o-ring is in place but the riser doesn't move too easily but it did go down a little more... It came with extra rings so maybe it needs to be replaced...

Make sure the riser tube is clean, any calcification or heavy salt creep can prevent it from operating smoothly.

it was all cleaned up when I got it, something has to be binding when moving the rizer. I will take it apart later.....

Have you looked at the impeller on the pump?? If not, pull it and see if it's a needle wheel.

All the o-rings take time to break-in. Mine all leaked a little until a half year went by.

Not a matter of leaking, it will overflow if I have the gate valve attached. Its either the gate valve or the riser not both at the same time

It was the standard impeller like this but only clear\white which I have done the mesh mod.

I removed the o-ring to see if the riser would go any lower - it doesn't. there is nothing stopping it from hitting the bottom of the return cylinder.....

I'm outta ideas short of cutting the riser to maker it shorter.... Looking for any other ideas....

Psirex, I've gone back a little in this thread but may not have seen all, so bear with me as I ask you a few questions.

1. Did you ever have it working correctly??

2. When did you do the mesh mod and can you get a pic of it?

3. Have you cleaned the venturi?

I ask because there seems to be too much water being thrown into the skimmer body. I kinda get the same thing if something is blocking the venturi, like a build up of calcium deposits where the water and air meet.

Hey Misled,

Have you modded your ASM?

I've done everything except the recirculating mod. I did come up with a different mod to supply water to the skimmer though. I'll get you some pics of that when I get home. Since I just had to replace the impeller, my mesh mod is no longer there. I also removed the gate valve mod because there wasn't room when I added my fuge.
