I wouldnt take on this task without a degree in Marine Biology. And really, many people who have degrees in Marine biology couldnt take on this task. Youd have to understand more than just skimmers, flow and lighting. Some people with our smaller tanks (even 300g tanks are small compared to this) can pull it off with just spending money on quality equipment. You'll end up needing quality equipment, along with a very very broad knowledge of marine ecosystems, and the chemistry involved in natural reefs.

Youd need tons of experience, along with very deep pockets to pull this off. I think it would be awesome if it could be done properly. If not done properly, it looks like a terrible waste of money.

I have an undergrad in said degree and still wouldn't touch it, lol. Personally, if money wasn't an object, I would go with something in the 1-5000g range and buy a vacation home on a coast where I could snorkel and dive.

Not being a hater but the initial open ended question itself either implies that you probably don't have the experience to tackle a project of this magnitude on your own or you are baiting us. Either way, I would strongly advise you to seek a qualified contractor with experience in this particular arena.

At the end of the day, an endless budget doesn't necessarily translate into a successful massive reef. You really need to pull in the relative expertise to set it up as well as have someone to maintain it, which in and of itself is probably a full time job.

I think the most interesting thing about a "tank" like this, assuming it can be done would be the flow. Obviously you can't be siphoning the detritus out of a 10k gallon tank all the time so you'll need some serious flow to ensure everything stays suspended. I'm think like 40x or more turnover would be appropriate.

With that in mind... can anyone imagine swimming/snorkeling in a tank pushing 400,000 GPH constantly?! Now that's a workout!! :p

OOH! maybe a wavepool, those are so fun... have to talk to tunze about upgrading their 6212 a wee bit

I understand serpentmans view. Unless you have constant water exxchange from the ocean it will be VERY hard to do, mainly because or rain water waste ect.... to have to worry about salinity changes from rainwatoer top off waterchanges ect.... would to me be more of a PITA then anything. Build a HUGE tank in your house probaly be alot easier in the long run. Build a oasis of a pool and enjoy it instead of maintaining it but thats just MHO. It is something amazing if you do it best of luck
