Care of African blue zoanthids...

At this point I would guess that it is not contagious. The watermelon colony was pretty far from the blues (about a foot). I think it was just a coincidence that it melted around the same time. I was noticing the polyps shrinking in size before I got the african blues, but they started vanishing almost overnight.
I also have a nice colony of tubbs blues right near where the dieoff was occuring and I haven't lost a single tubbs polyp.

I have the african blues colony in pretty good flow. It is right in front of a powerhead but not getting blasted by it. I also have pretty good flow in my tank with hardly any dead spots. I am unsure of the exact GPH, but I am running 2x hydor 3's and my return is im guessing around 5-600gph in a 90g tank. I have not tried them in a low flow area yet.

Hope this was enough info to answer your question.

found this crab carrying around a couple polyps

I'd put him in ISOLATION, sump till you get a better ID. Send this for ID at the invert section. Maybe Leslie or someone can properly ID it and its habits.

Well I paid $40 for a 10 polyps frag a month ago. I thought these were just awesome and had to have them . I treated them like any other zoa low light low/med flow....

Needless to say They were gone in 2 weeks.

well I have been lurking and folowwing theis thread...

TODAY WAS MY LUCKY DAY!!
I walked into the LFS and found 2 different 200+ colonies for $49.99!!! WOW!!!!

I have them 2" from the top under 3x 250w halide 125g SPS tank with 12,000 gph.

They did have a lil brown slime on them but I used a PH in my QT tank and was ablt to blow it all away. Getting ready for a Lugols dip right now 2ml/1lt right?

All polyps loog good so not furan2 at this point but going to keep it handy at the 1st sign of problems....

I am getting whiplash from this thread! Mfinn...sorry to hear about your loss.....

After reading this thread, have we learned anything about what might have been done differently to avoid losing your colony?

If you had another colony of the same...what would you do differently?

Thanks for the info.

I did the dip with formalin, put the colony near the top of my tank under my 250 watt 14k bulbs. Near the outflow of a couple Tunze 6045's.
At this point, I would say it would be best to wait untill captive grown polyps were available, and resist buying the next wild colony I see.

My colony is 99% gone. I'm down to about 5 or 6 polyps that seem to have been unaffected by whatever was bothering the rest.

So what should I get in case of problems.

I did do the dip using Lugols (Kent)
Should I get formulin or furna or revive?

Is there a consensus on what works best?

I Revive dipped one of my frags and left the other alone as a test, both are at 1 month and doing fine so far, so not much for outcomes yet.

Maybe we can just hope that the first shipment from africal just was bad shipping and future imports will be better taken care of???

I also wonder if it has somthing to do with the rock they come on?

Could it be leaching somthing?
