One small step for Steve, one giant step for reefdom:) Way to go Steve! Wel deserved kudos. How did this come about? Perrhaps more of us could contact local papers etc. as a vehicle to promote the hobby, and more importantly to help educate people about the current perils to reefs around the world and ultimately to us all.

nice to see a local

nice to see a local

 Awesome nice to see a local get some info out.. hopefully people outside our little nitch will read it and listen too..

great job

Just got in from work and nice to see that unsolicited, this was picked up by the reef guys ... OK I did drop a heavy hint to Zanclus in a PM last night. But St James you were on your own without any hints.

To be honest I didn't know how it was going to come out so I was kind of keeping my head down in case the paper didn't get the facts as I'd tried to explain them. I was lucky enough to get a great reporter who has a biology background and was able to translate my reef-geek drivel into something that hopefully the general public can understand. Believe it or not, it was only her second article.

Zanclus: yeah I know photo makes me look like a goon - must be the (halide) lighting :)

Drbronx: All came about through the reporter visiting the Ithaca Sciencenter I believe. After that I got a call asking if they could do an article. I wanted to make sure that it didn't just focus on the novelty of coral farming without getting over the message that our reefs are in trouble - with a plug for our hobby thrown in. I think it's important to use our aquaria as educational tools for the public as much as possible. It's easy to criticize our hobby from a simplified environmentalist angle but I truly believe there is positive benefit in the responsible keeping of reef systems. I'm half expecting to get flamed by somebody over this though. We'll see.

Well thanks for the accolades. Now back to earth ... gotta go clean the skimmer !

a great article on a great person, anyone who has ever met steve and kathy know how much time and effort they have put into this hobby, i have spent many hours over the years talking corals with steve and he is always willing to take the time to chat even when , at times, im sure he had more important things to do.
I am sure i speak for many when i say thank you for some of the best frags around, for all of your work at the science center and for being such a great spokesman for our hobby.
