DanW's 187 SPS Dominated Reef Journal

 Sorry, I over slept today

Happy Friday everyone, man this felt like it was a long week.

Sounds like the story of my life this week ... can't wake up in the AM and the week has been dragging on! Happy Friday!:celeb1:

Big Dan!! Long time no!

I'd suggest that you find somewhere to set up the bin long(er) term, somewhere where you can put it and leave it until your tank finds it's final resting place

Sup Ian! Yeah, I think that I'm going to go with just having the bin running until my tank is up in the new house. Thanks for the input...btw the C. bathyphilus are doing great :lol2:

My tank has plenty of room :D
If I run outta room I'll send them your way.

Nice Hulk
Thanks Mark.

I hear ya Sara, this week was particularly bad.

:( Any idea why you lost yours? It's a really nice piece, it just grows so slow.

Hey Dan! If I can help in anyway possible with the tank relocation let me know. I doubt I've got the room for your large colonies but I can squeeze some medium/small acro's on my sand bed for you. Ive also got a frag tank that I can hold lps in. Its kept all of Kats LPS healthy since her tank seems to kill them LOL

Thanks Ramzy, I appreciate it. I think I've got a plan for the corals but I may hit you up to help lift the tank in a few weeks. I'll let you know.

I'm also in the area if you need help Dan. my tank isn't set up yet, but if you need extra muscles, I have a few left.

I spent a few hours over the weekend getting all the pieces together for the temporary tank. Here's what I got set-up. Let me know what you guys think and if you see any potential issues.

PVC piping for the lighting structure:

Also picked up the glass shield, not yet installed.

Here's the tub that Stryker loaned me...thanks again Terry, you're the man.

Here's as far as I got. I've been doing frequent water changes and adding the "used" water from my display to the bin to hopefully decrease the stress of foreign water during the transfer. Don't know if it helps but I guess it can't hurt. Light might be a little high, I'll have to adjust it later.

Looking good Dan! I like that you have your pvc stand build beefy so that it can't be easily bumped and the pendant drops on the floor or even worse into the bin. Also, I personally would rather have less light than too much on the corals and stress them out.

I too like adding water from my existing system into the holding system as that helps the "seeding" of the water. If nothing else, it sounds good in my head ;)

Thanks Sara, yeah I tend to over engineer stuff but I did so on purpose this time. With the kids running around I wanted a super sturdy structure.

So far so good, Dan. Why the glass shield for the reflector?
Let me know if you see anywhere were I can make improvements. I got the glass shield just so saltwater wouldn't splash on the reflector. I remember on my old retro T-5s that when salt got on them it was impossible to clean them. Also in case water splashes on the bulb...I donno maybe cause the bulb to crack? Probably over engineered as usual. :o

I actually have all of mine fitted with glass shields too. Makes cleaning the reflector easier since you only have to do the glass and my wrasses have splashed enough water to crack a brand new bulb.

Looks good Dan! Good luck with all the livestock... never an easy thing. Where will you be keeping the tube when moving?

Yeah, Sara you and I are on the same page on this one. I just remember with my retro T-5s that once the salt baked on the reflectors I could never really clean it off or maybe it just corroded the reflector. Reminds me that I have to make a net top to keep my wrasses in the tub.

Thanks Brian, it will go into my mom's garage until we find a house we like. Next weekend my plan is to move the livestock and equipment, that's when the real worrying begins :(

Sure no problem! I helped move all of Tom's tanks in one day, I feel like a professional after all that :lolspin: Let me know when you plan on moving the tank and I'll be there to help. We might even be able to borrow the suction cups from Tom that we used for his move.

Cool, thanks for the offer Ramzy. I'm really interested in the suction cups. Not sure I trust those things...did they work well for you guys on big tanks?
