DanW's 187 SPS Dominated Reef Journal

I use the CaribSea Seaflor special grade sand and I've never had problems with it being blown around. It's big enough to stay put but fine enough that it's still pleasant to look at.

Do you think I could pour the Special Grade over the existing sand? I wonder if the bigger particles would just work their way underneath the existing sand.

You probably can but you would need an inch or more of the coarser stuff. You might need to vacuum out part of your current sand so the sandbed isn't too deep. I try to replace the top layer of my sand once or twice a year, so even if the special grade works it's way down, you can put another layer on top down the road.

Oh yeah, to lay down the new sand, I use a section of 2" PVC. I then cut off the top of a 2 liter bottle and made the opening just smaller than the PVC and taped them together. That way, you can pretty much "aim" where you want the new sand and drop it off at the sandbed instead of raining it down and have cloudy water.

Kenny that is ingenious! I’ve got a tiger tail cuc (actually 2 because it split) do you think it would be OK with the more course sand?

Mark,

So are you going to siphon the current sand out and put in the new sand or put the new sand on top of the old sand?

Thats the plan, First I will have to remove all the chalices that have littered the bottom so I can get under some of the rocks. I will being doing a little in the next water change and a some more in the next water change in two weeks. Its never fun, but its either this of BB :( I do have a sheet or grey PVC in place just in case though ;)

Yes, it should be fine. I have a diamond goby and that is what I have been worried about.

Sorry, I'm a noob. What is the grey PVC for?

Yeah, I'm worried that the course substrate will injure the cuc. Do you think the larger size will lower the nitrate processing ability?

I used it instead of starboard to line the bottom in case I ever went BB. It protects the glass in case in rocks crash.

As for the SB, I have a pretty large size grain as is, Just keep your sandbed 1.5 inches or less an you will be fine.

Dan. I have couple Tiger Tail Cucumber in my tank. My sand is mix, and they like to cruise everywhere, even on Glass, so I think is fine.

Beside I do have same problem with BB in the front, because of my Wavebox. Do you guy think it stay put with CaribSea Seaflor special grade sand ?

Daniel, I tried that and got this back. You're welcome to come by anytime.
Dan. Thanks I will.

The PVC bottom is to prevent falling rocks from cracking the glass bottom in BB tanks. Starboard is also commonly used.

As for nitrate processing ability, I've always used the special grade sand and have never had nitrate issues. Plus, fine sand is good and all if you are walking on the beach. But if you dive or snorkel, the sand bottom of the reefs are usually pretty coarse :)

Thanks guys but I still have a problem as my sand bed is DEEP (like I said I got a little carried away) and getting it down to 1 1/2" would be difficult (avalanche). Unfortunately I do not have any bottom protection (although it is tempered). Maybe what I’ll do is siphon off a bit and add the special grade or just fill in the low spots with the special grade stuff. Think that will work?

You heard it from "The Man"!

Four weeks after filling the tank, the tests indicate that the parameters are safe enough to make the transfer. So on December 7, 2008 all of the livestock was transferred over and if you can believe this, no fatalities. But before the FTS here are pictures of a few of the corals in their new home.

Yeah. I heard from him. Hope it doesn't disappoint me cause I had some coarser grain got flow away.

Those corals are nice Dan.

Nice build you have going on there. I hated having two tanks running at the same time. But it looks great with the tonga..

Thanks Daniel. I know someone that is using Tropic Eden "Reef Flakes" and it doesn't move for sure but I've heard that their could be issues using large sized substrate unless you vacuum or frequently disturb it.

Thank you William. I agree, having two tanks in the living room was a bit of an inconvenience.

great tank
Thank you MFD

These pictures were taken on December 8, 2008 one day after the livestock transfer. As I mentioned no casualties however, a little bit of the Hippo tang’s tail got chopped off somehow and has never grown back but he is doing fine.

You need more fish, Dan. Some nice fairy wrasses will do nicely :)
Believe it or not I have about 15 fish in there and I love wrasses. I currently have Cirrhilabrus jordani, Pseudocheilinus ocellatus; Macropharyngodon geoffroyi and a Pseudojuloides cerasinus. I’m working on obtaining two more: Cirrhilabrus rhomboidalis and Cirrhilabrus lineatus.
