Chaetodontidae fans rejoice. Chaetodon excelsa was collected for what many believe to be the first time ever...at 450ft deep. A pair was collected in Hawaii yesterday by Rufus Kimura and appear to have taken the decompression well. Exciting news for fish geeks

Crazy deep dive for that fish.....

Looks just like the modestus we got in yesterday, dorsal spot is rounder on that species, and the eye seems smaller. Ours has Neobenedenia and scraped up dorsal spines, and isn't eating yet - but I have my fingers crossed. To be perfectly honest, I'd pick a modestus anytime because they now down to about the same price of a big imperator....of course, most people would balk at paying even that for a brown and white fish(grin).

Plenty other deepwater Roa are very hardy and adaptable to captivity...

Pretty extreme dive followed by 8 hours decompression time, $$ must be good for such a risk. Longest in water decompression I've done is little over one hour using HEO2, and you get bored. Guess they got the fish for company to keep divers busy .

DJ, what are you talking about? These are the first Roa excelsa to be collected alive. The only others have been collected via deepwater trawls. Richard Pyle hasn't even seen them on any of his deep dives. Make sure you check your facts before adding in your comments.

LOL How much do they cost BTW?

Well, the Prognathodes basabei were marked around 6k and there was only a handful of them collected.

With only 2 Excelsa collected, ever... you do the math...

Its not always about the money ;) You know the golden rule; if you have to ask.....

Got some photos and updates from Japan. The Roas did not handle the shipping / handling stress well, but the Prognathodes look great. Updates coming later in the week.
