DSPS tank from Thailand (1000 gallon+)

ChingChai , i will not recommend you to use the fibreglass as it will have stagnant water trap in the fake rocks and will encourage algae growth . The Biology with these are not as good as the live rocks.

Please reconsider

Dear Chingchai,
I would second the opinion everyone has regarding fibre glass. Going exclusive fibre glass can lead to lack of bio filtration. Maybe live rock and fibre glass in combination will help.
Have you considered reusing the same live rock that you have maybe after bleach or acid treatment and re curing it with live bacterial culture?
The fibre glass structure does look absolutely natural though and an almost like a reflection of your initial aquascape.
I wish you the best of luck in your endeavor and knowing you and your master reefing skills you will definately come out on top.

For the "newly established" SRC softie system, which the fiberglass structure was originally designed for, it is a much more feasible alternative than for your established, mature DSPS system !

Chelmon muelleri, Chingchai. Chelmon muelleri ...

Just give it 5-6 months, while performing an extended curing process on the fiberglass structures.

Awesome rock. I really like the structure, and with last version having a hand in it to I'm sure it will look astounding. I am a huge fan of his tank.

CRD. Thank you so much for your concern.

Yesterday I visited the factory.
Here is some progression of the rockwork.

Amazing rock work skills these manufacturers have.
Looks very natural and carbon copy of your original rock work. It's gonna be a masterpiece.
Come to think of it, since you have a deep sandbed refugium it can handle the denitrification part of the bio filtration.
This rock work is gonna look great in your setup without any doubt.

Youre welcome, Chingchai. Anything I can do to help ensure your extraordinary reef continues to thrive :)

As Shawn noted, I'm sure you'll make it work ! I just don't believe it is the "best practice"/option for this specific situation, perhaps after other less drastic measures ...

There are four forms of filtration available to us: Mechanical, biological, chemical & disinfection. UV irradiation and ozonation are both forms of disinfection, but can be used tother just as one would use a protein skimmer and filter sock/bag for mechanical filtration.

Ozone is often used sporadically on a timer and or ORP controller. UV on the other hand can run 24/7. Ozone can alter salts and convert bromide into bromine. This acts as a strong oxidant that can harm the display tank residents. UV sterilizers have no residual affect on the the display tank. You only kill the organisms that travel through the UV sterilizer.

UV is considered to be the "safe" method of disinfection, while Ozone is considered to be the "effective" method. In my opinion, the two compliment each other.

Plankton does not pass through a UV sterilizer to ay great extent, and if it should go down that road, it will make it through unscathed. Copepods, amphipods, mysids and isopods for that matter, stay in the substrate and even when they venture out at night for a swim, they are able to stay clear of pump intakes. There is a common myth that your refugium will feed your tank, but it can oly do so if you shake the algae culture out in the display tank manually.

Medicating the food with metronidazole and or chloroquine is the only effective method of treating ich in a reef tank without harming the inverts. There may be some measured success in feeding the fish garlic, ginger & onion, but it sounds more like the start of a delicious tom yum recipe :)

Thanks Mr Wilson.

Are you saying that it's ok to feed metronidazole to the reeftank, without harming the filter or the inhabitants?.

I always thought that antibiotic dosing into the reeftank could harm the filter bacteria, so interested to hear if it works without harm....

Thanks
Mo

I think Mr. Wilson meant adding the antibiotics to the food which is in turn taken up by the livestock.
I think direct dosing the above mentioned antibiotics is harmful in a reef tank.
:)

Yes, feeding antibiotic laden food to your reef tank?...

Sorry, slightly off topic, Chingchai. The fiberglass structures look great. I am sure your filtration system may well manage it all, especially if you undertake some curing process outside of the tank. If the material doesn't leach, you may not even need that.

No harm in trying the butterflies though?... except maybe to your LPS?..

Mo

LPS likely wouldnt even have an issue within the dimensions of Chingchais' DSPS, especially if the above Majano conditioning regimen of the C. muelleri is implemented correctly ...

Chingchai. It's the way to go, given the scenario :)

I agree with mo sir
Why not take out all of your LPS for few months then
Get a Majano eating butterfly ?
Lawrence, there were too many problems happen in the last few months.
I did think about quitting in this hobby but I can't. Maybe it is the destiny.
So the only way to bring back my attention is I have to do some drastic change.
I may make a wrong decision to use this fiberglass and not listening to you guys' advice.
We'll see.

I see ...

What's the nature of the problem(s), Chingchai ? If you care to divulge this information, of course.

Had a feeling it was more deeply related to your current interest level than to the actual negative reactions of the Majanoes. I respect you, and your innovative work/passion within the hobby, all the more for being honest with yourself and everyone else vested in this project.

This is your Destiny, Chingchai, as it is also mine ... You're at the pinnacle of this awe-inspiring hobby, whenever you are on top it is easy to look down and wonder what it would be like but you must press on in your quest to find higher peaks !

Again, as Shawn also noted, I am sure you will find a way to make it work ! Best of luck in your endeavors :)
