Melev! It is Melev you seek. Master of sumps is he. Lead you away from the Darkside he will.

Personally, I'm crazy about Badmington - but only the way it's played in south east Asia - I could tell ya stories ....

Alan, what are your sump's dimensions? I really like the way they got so many functions into so relatively small a space.

Actually I used TFE paste instead of Tape everywhere. I happy I did as Tape wont crack thing like DART inlets ect, and I had to screw em down pretty tight with the paste to stop any leaks.

I used silicone everywhere there wasn't a thread and I had a leak, or if for some reason it was leaking through a thread. That's only happened once, and I'm still getting a wet spot under a bulkhead even though I've never seen a drip and when I run my fingers around the joint nothing is wet. Its annoying as hell.

If you get a small leak on a fitting do you have to break it down or can you add silicone to the outside?

You can add it to the outside, but it won't work unless you give it at least 24 hours to cure without any water hitting it.

BTW if salt seals why do we get salt creep from fittings and the like?

'Cause it hasn't finished sealing yet. ;)

Nice looking sump!

TFE, TetraFluoroEthylene, needs a catchy name like.. maybe Teflon. :D

Right, but its paste, not tape. The paste can flow and it does. The tape can bulge in place if not applied properly or wrapped too thick stressing thin walled housings like the dart. That's the point I was trying to make :)

I know you like that PTFE paste instead of PTFE tape but I've used it on my bathroom remodel and the stuff gets everywhere and doesn't set (that's why it's such a good sealant). I find that it doesn't wash off and if it ever gets in your tank I'm afraid of where it might go. I think I mentioned to you before that I took the strainers off my faucets after a week and the screen was coated with the stuff and hot water wouldn't remove it.
I do like your idea of using silicone. Can you use it instead of tape or with tape. I understand that you can still unscrew the fitting even when the silicone has dried.

The connections on my Blueline pumps are 1" male threads so they should be less prone to breaking than a female connection. I cranked down pretty hard on the female PVC adapter and it was fine.

It's 40" long x 14" high x 13" wide. If you go with the external skimmer this adds about 24" to the overall length. It's really compact and is designed to fit under a 48" stand (if you chose the in-sump skimmer option). Here's a picture of one with a calc reactor. Looks like they added fluorescent lights under the stand so you could see all the nice equipment. :D LifeReef Sump Jeff builds good stuff. My sump was # 109 this year and this was one of many types of sumps he builds besides calc reactores, skimmers, refugiums, etc. For a one man band that's pretty good and he answered every email I sent within 24 hours (and being a newbie I must have sent 50 or more). :eek2:

I hate to append to the great WaterKeepers post, :p but isn't it PTFE PolyTetraFluoroEthylene?

Why does the smillie insert itself at the end of the text instead of where your cursor is? Or is this one of life's great mysteries (like women)

Nice Build. I look forward to your updates
Thanks Eric.
I was away in sunny Pittsburgh  for Christmas. My skimmer and Aqua Controller should arrive tomorrow, plus I found some 1-1/2" PVC conduit straps in HD up in Pittsburgh (my local stores were out  ) so I should be able to finish the supply and return piping this week.
I have to make a decision on the DT in the next few days. I have quotes from Aquarium Obsessed and Concept Aquarium - both in Canada (why are all the glass aquarium manufacturers in Canada eh? :p )
Stay tuned.
Thanks

The used up all the U.S. supply of silicone in Hollywood and Las Vegas? :D

It violates the spirit of our policies
It wastes the time of every user subscribed to a thread in this forum
It wastes systems resources emailing subscription notices for this forum

If you'd like to increase your post count to get a custom avatar, a custom title or to participate in the selling forums please contribute. Users abusing this, or any, forum for the purpose of increasing their post count will have their posts removed and their post count adjusted accordingly.
