Fish that make noise...

Had a real startled moment when a very angry female golden domino dascyllus damsel (nearly 3") made a buzz not unlike a rattlesnake (I'd done major rockwork rearrangement and sent every damsel in the tank ballistic). It was such a loud, scary sound I actually feared for my half-inch glass, and maybe shockwaves that might harm others (this didn't happen). [She did settle after a few of those.] I looked it up and found a scientific paper, no less, and the meaning is, she's female, she's broody, and she's clearing nest territory which I disturbed. This noise is a characteristic of domino dascyllus. It's clicks when they're mating and buzzes when they're upset.

Fellow reefer mentioned his imperator angels make sounds at each other. They grunt.

Any other talking fish out there?

She doesn't know how good she'd have it, no Clowns to chase her tail all day and a handsome Blue Spot Jawfish to pal around with!

Dascylus make the same "tock, tock, tock" sounds as clownfish.

My first pistol shrimp really scared me - every time he made his "knack" sound I thought my tank had cracked. It still scares me some times.

My two triggers make no noise. My emperor angel on the other hand, barks very loudly. Every night, he and my Niger trigger jocky for position for the best sleeping cave and there is a whole lot of barking going on. My tank is in the basement and I can hear him upstairs.

I had a powder blue that make a very similar loud rapid-vibrating sound when unhappy...she would make that sound and swim these insanely fast, really tight circles around a queen trigger...her body would get the black vertical bars that appear when they are unhappy...lol, almost sounded like an a-10 warthog but at a different pitch...quite unique compared to the grunts my triggers and angels make..
