HoB skimmers nowadays?

The pump on my Deltec MCE300 finally gave up the ghost after something like a decade. I don't think I can find a maxi-jet 1000 that'll fit the old pinwheel impeller since they've apparently changed the internals on the maxi-jet...unless the internals on the 1200 have always been different from the 1000, I only had a newer 1200 lying around which has a different impeller design AND is too fat to fit inside the skimmer.

Are there any standout HoB skimmers to look closely at? Any to avoid?

AquaMaxx HOB 1.5 is a good one. Stay away from the AquaC Remora unless you are really patient. I have one and it constantly needs tuning.

I think the deltecs are still the best on the market. I have the mce500 on my 75gal tank and it is the best I've ever had. I had the aquamaxx hob cone skimmer (don't remember the model number) on it for about 2 years and it was a great skimmer but was a pain to use. Mine kept overflowing. The venturi hole would clog up with a hard white deposit and since they glued the venture to the inlet pipe there was no way to take it apart and clean it. I've heard good things about the Aquamaxx HOB 1.5 but never used it.

You might contact Marine Depot, they are the exclusive Deltec US distributor. I believe the MCE300 is still made so they may be able to get you up and running without having to buy a new skimmer.

I didn't even consider contacting Marine Depot just to see if they could help. That's definitely worth the shot.

Otherwise I'd been seeing Aquamaxx HOB 1.5 mentioned a couple times so I may just go that route.

I have a Eshopps hob skimmer for the last 5years.Pulls very good skimmate out.It is less than $200.I believe the ones now use the Siece pump. You might look into it.

You can also contact Battlecorals. That is who I bought my Deltec from and he even thru in a free media basket for mine. Nice guy and you may have better luck going thru him than Marine Depot since Deltec is the only product he carries. I would have mentioned him first but when Marine Depot took over the Deltec line they got some exclusive right to it and Battlecorals had to stop carrying them. I guess it must have only been a 1 year agreement because I see Battlecorals has them listed on their site again.

This looks REALLY encouraging. I've had an absolute nightmare trying to get someone to talk to at Marine Depot. Their "send a message" on their site is broken, their "live chat" never has anyone show up, and on twitter all they have done is tell me their business hours and then ignore me when I told them there were problems getting in contact with someone. And no friggin' email address anywhere! I'd given up trying to fix my Deltec (and ever buying from Marine Depot again) and was going to buy something else today but I'm forgoing that for a bit now that I just emailed battlecorals to see if he can help me out.

Thanks!

MarineDepot has always picked up the phone when I called. Have you tried calling them?

Hi Xolsiion. I'm not familiar with what happened in the past although reading your post makes me feel just awful. I am sorry we let you down. I would love for the opportunity to speak with you. My personal email address is jjohnston@marinedepot.com. Our general customer service inbox is customercare@marinedepot.com. I'll make sure the latter is placed on the website in easier to find spots today (already sent an email to request it). If a call is easier, you can reach me at 714-385-0080 x688. I do not work in our customer service department, I work in marketing, but seating-wise I am sandwiched between the support guys/gals and our buyers ... so I can get answers to most inquiries quickly. I know we experienced some site stability issues during the busy Memorial Day weekend, but if there are other issues currently happening on the site, I would appreciate your help in tracking them down.

Sincerely,

Jeff @ Marine Depot

I see the email address is there if I scroll down far enough and I totally missed it. My mistake there. I was so focused on the "send us a message" and "live chat" in the top banner, and the problems, I didn't realize there was an email if I looked hard enough. It would have been nice if they'd given me an email address on twitter rather than just business hours...I was kinda assuming there wasn't a public email address by that point.

I'm going to email customer care as the proper channel and I'll hold your contact in reserve just in case. Thanks for reaching out, I appreciate it.

Actually the email address was added today thanks to your feedback. Feel free to cc me on your email so I can stay in the loop. I already asked our Deltec buyer if we're able to acquire that pump and she left a VM this morning to find out. Not sure if you still need/want it but figured I'd get that going in the meantime just in case.

Jeff @ Marine Depot

Hi again! Sounds like replacement pumps are not readily available so please let us know if you want us to try and track some down for you.

Jeff @ Marine Depot

PS: I've kept the customer service managers in the loop on this so they know in case you email.

Apologies for bringing this thread back to the top, but I wanted to make sure I'd publicly written an update praising MarineDepot

Once I was in contact with them they've been working closely with me to try to help me out, contacting people in Germany and trying to find the best options to help me out. They even updated the website so the next person has an easier time finding a contact. Have been very impressed over the last week and a half and really appreciated it.

Thank You!

I still see the MCE300 for sale, what are they using in it now? If different, couldn't they just send you the new pump and the plastic tubing so it would work, or has the design changed and you can't retrofit them.

I think those are just old ones that never sold? What I heard back from them was, quote, "The odds are against your favor as that item was discontinued back in 2009."

...So I could see where there aren't replacement parts? Maybe?

I wonder if Battlecorals even has any then. They have it listed on their site.

This place says they have MJ 1000's though not sure how much shipping would cost.

Battlecorals thought they might have them and were also going to check with Germany but I haven't heard back from him after I told him that Marine Depot thought the system was discontinued 9 years ago. So...maybe?

As far as the MJ, part of my problem is that there's an after-market impeller in it - it's a needle wheel rather than a standard prop so even if I could get it I'd need to track down a different impeller.

I've basically arrived at the point that I just need to suck it up and buy a new skimmer :)
