How not to build a 750/1500 gallon build thread-Khaosinc 3/5/71-8/30/11

I'm sure, above everyone else, Khaosinc wishes this thread was entirely devoted to his 'helluva box to put fish in'. However, in the process of setting up new tanks, life happens. I think this thread became so popular because
a) he is a good and very personable writer
b) he has a very unique concept for his gigantic tank
c) people are genuinely interested in him (his health and his tank)

I sincerely hope this thread continues with a primary focus on his tank, meaning his health is no longer slowing down his tank build. And I have no doubt that as soon as he can, he will steer the thread back to tank progress (as he has with questions about a more efficient water change process - I'm sure you'll agree that's Fish Forum appropriate) But until then, I'm always happy to read updates on his recovery and his life :)

Now let's see a FTS!!
Agreed. You at least understand that I am not blah blah blah unmotivated negative blah blah blah... If someone had of just told the story of this build, without the colorful character, they would have been shot down. But the fella IS a character. And as I said, it was started off by saying this is how not to do it. And it is one helluva box to hold the fish. I too hope that the health doesn't interfere with the tank... but more to the point, I hope the tank doesn't interfere with the health. The guy honestly seems like a very unique character and it all sounds like Mayhem with a Roof! Seperate topics of conversation, "Wooo whooo, Khaosinc, you rock! Get well soon" and "How not to build a tank"...

But I am not hijackin, I said my piece, and got a couple PMs in agreement... I just hope this thread jumps back on the lines of a character and his tank, and how can this forum help it.

And how about some FTS? That would be cool.

After following many threads for many years here on Reef Central, I'd have to say there is more to this hobby than the aquarium itself. We make new friends along the way as well. When following someone through a build thread, it's very easy to get attached to the individual(s) behind the posts.

Why shouldn't the community wish Khaosinc well? He has a moving story to go along with his reef build. We may or may not agree with how he gets the job done, but how often do people agree on these forums? If you don't want to read the thread anymore because it deviates into Khaos' personal issues, you are free to move on to the thousands of other threads this forum has to offer.

Imzadi, you could have stated your position with a little more tact. What could have been constructive criticism turned into a personal attack on the fans of this thread.
Totally agree. And not once do I think the community shouldn't wish him well, as I do. I don't mind the deviance toward the personal issues... again, I never said that. "We may or may not aggre with how" is what I am not seeing anything about. Cant see the fish, cuz of the cloudy cycling. I waited 6 months to put fish in my first tank, and even then was hesitant.

I should never have said anything, I guess... it will just be fodder for the flamers...as the negativity was injective into my post not by myself, but by the masses. It just woulda been cool to have a thread each for man and tank... The thread about Khoasinc, the man, would be the TOTM.

My last post.

I have read many many threads on RC and this one has been the most captivating even before the sad turn of events that took place with Khaos. It was a very different style of writing which is what captured all the audience you see here on this thread.
I am very positive that Khaos would be the last person that would have wanted to see the thread get more focused on medical issues that occured after he started his build. I think he would have prefered to still be writing only about his tank but as someone said before, life happens. That story should be told as well, if only to explain why the build was on hold for so long.
That being said, everyone should be entitled to their own opinion and should not be shot down for having a different opinion as long as it is done in a civil manner. That is what makes this a discussion forum. So I have to say that I respect your opinion Imzadi but for me this is the BEST thread I have ever read on RC. Keep up the good work Khaos

Imzadi you are very annoying . your are correct you should have said nothing. now go away and tend to your fish tank, and do a proper water change and be a good example to us all . you are like a jealous chick who gets annoyed that some other chick is getting more attention than her . nobody body is looking at you . take your top off and show your [tatas]s and join the party ......................or just go to another party

Wow, is everyone mean in canada, or are you some kind of mutant???!!!

Yes, this is a fish forum, but it is people who have the interest in and dedication to the hobby, and it is people who make the hobby what it is. This thread is a perfect example of individuals who don't know each other, and who might be very different from each other, but have a common cause and interest which brings us together, and makes us care about each other.

Sorry it's not to your liking, but this thread is pretty interesting to a lot of us; didn't your mother ever teach you about not saying anything at all if you can't say something nice???

Being from the buffalo/niagara falls area in NY and having family that lives in Canada I can tell you that maybe not all Canadians are mean and cynical, but the hundreds i have encountered are. This is the best thread I have encountered on any reef forum. It has everything, its entertaining, informative, and a little fantasy like for those who cant afford or dont have the Huevos to do it. This is a reef site for those who like, love, and are addicted to reefing. Since there are people with lung cancer who still smoke, I see no problem with someone risking health matters doing something they love and are addicted too. Kudos on the thread Khaosinc. I visit seattle almost every spring, maybe I could come out and drool all over your tank room. P.S. If im out there and you want to repaint that room i am a wiz when it comes to dry wall. No more dings LOL

... As far as planning goes. For a man on a beer budget to pull a champaign tank out of his wrasse, it took planning. Maybe not up to everyone's specs, but it did take planning. I mean no disrespect so I will say nothing disrespectful. That's how it works down south in the Good ole USA. Awesome tank .... did you see lights or have any weird out of body things going on during the whole ordeal. Just curious. It's taken me all day to read the whole thread, will be following closely from now on. Kudos to tink for keeping most everything alive. : )

I have personally enjoyed this thread greatly. In fact I have lurked around this forum for a few years but never posted until yesterday, much becasue a thread like this inspires me to be more invoved with a place like this. To me this thread is exactly what makes internet forums so great... I heard a story I would have never dreamed of, I have experienced different ways to do things that I would never have dreamed of (and probably will never have the balls to try) and I got to hear a cool human life story. I don't have to agree with the techniques and its free entertainment!

big K, I appreciate the fact that you are continuing to do this because you want to. Hot damn this is gonna be a good one when it is done.

I wonder where Khaos's larger hammer is now! He did say he knows what size of hammer to hit things with. Now knock this thread back on track. Quit hijacking it everyone. Khaos knows what we all think and what is just nonsense. I might be headed to Seattle soon hope to make it your way to give you a hand if I can! It would cost you a few beers and some great stories!

LOL.... hopefully that phaze of this thread is over now as well.

If it wasn't for this dang working for a living I could get more done on the tank.

I'm ready for retirement... I just need the money part

dude, some people just have very little else to do except come up withe reasons to hate...keep on keeping on...

Anyone who has set up a large tank understands what an undertaking that is and how much work is involved...without having medical/financial issues.

your thread has been very interesting and I for one feel that its the people involved in the hobby that makes it one of the greatest out there.

I wasn't worried about it, just didn't really feel like it deserved a response.

Trust me, I would really prefer that I'd spent the last 3 months building/working on the tank. Then theres the $$$ I could have been wasting on said tank if I hadn't had to miss a month of work, and run up untold thousands in medical bills...

I do have to say, that as I really don't have much of a social life in the "real world" all of your collective support has been a life saver in helping me keep a decent attitude towards what has frequently seemed to be an impossible situation..

+1 and then some for Khaos. Your spirit inspires us all and your wit keeps us laughing. Here's to your continued good health -

And as to certain others -

Khaos, any thoughts to adding an empty bottle of Jack to the tank, a la PaulB's awesome tank? I'm thinking beer cans would probably be a bad idea... :)

I got an awesome wine bottle from, of all places, Uzbekistan. Who the heck knew that A) they make wine there, and B) they import it all the way to Jersey! But it's a spanking clay bottle w/ hand-carved black lettering all over it in Cyrillic. The wine was crp, but worth the price for the bottle.

Wow after 2 days and many diffrent shifts of reading I'm done the thread! I'd say everybody is very impressed & inspired.

I now need to show my fiance this thread before I pitch the idead of making a large upgrade aswell! :D

Congrats on the split, as soon as I started reading this thread I knew it would be thoughly enjoyed by all who read it.

So what options for mixing and storing tanks are you looking at? How much floor space are we talking here?

Khoas If you would like to add a PaulB liquor bottle to the tank lmk and PM me you mailing info. I have one ready to go for you. Better yet is actualy made by PaulB so it is an LE empty bottle. :)

Keep on keepin on man. One day as a lion!
