I-Tech Skimmer Club .

Hopefully they restart I upgraded from a itech 100 to itech 200. Maybe in the future upgrade to bigger tank and will need a itech 400 ;)

Is it Just Me?

Is it Just Me?

I've fighting my I-Tech 200 since I started using socks with it. Evertime I change socks, the skimmer goes friggin crazy and fills up. My normal process was to take the socks and spray the gunk off and place in brute. When I had 10 socks it was time to wash. I wash In a HE washer with a capfull of bleach and rinse twice and allow to thoroughly dry. (seems like what most do)

Here are the things I've done to try and combat it.

1) Turned off skimmer for 15 mins...30 mins...1 HOUR...still fills up the collection cup.
2) Stopped using bleach...still fills up the collection cup. Combined step one and two, no change.
3) Went back to bleach and triple rinsed and hung outside in the sun for 2 days. No help.
4) Rubbed my hands on the inlet of the skimmer pump ...works sometime but not all the time. I turn my back and it's bubbling up Texas Tea in the cup...

I've succumbed to turning down the skimmer and turn it back up (if I remember that day!) when I feel it's over it's temper tantrum.

I'd like to hear any other experiances you may have. thanks.

I’ve experienced the same after water changes with cup cleanings. I just wait about an hour or so afterwards before I turn it back on with mixed results definitly more positive than overruns. What happens is that I watch it of course and shut it down just as it starts to overrun only if I don't wait it out. As you have seen it runs best when dirty. I go two weeks between water changes and with cup cleanings and I’m curious on how long others are going between cleanings.

Is anyone else having trouble getting their cups off?

I used the suggested "super lube" to lube the oring and it seemed to make it harder at times. When I clean it and re-lube it works well for a short amount of time. After the week is threw and I need to clean the cup it is damn near impossible to get the cup off.

Any ideas.

Thanks

Don't know if this will help but I do not apply the lube to the oring. I smear the lube around the bottom 1/4 inch or so of the outer skimmer base. Before I started using the lube my cup was almost imposible to remove in its tight space with about 1 inch clearance above the lid, and now it's prety easy. I apply the lube maybe 2 or 3 times a year.

Hey Typlus5, I've found if I boil the sock in RO/DI for a few min then let it cold b4 reusing. I don't get a crazy skimmer.

Run extra rinse. I don't use bleach just run mine under hot water cycle. I wash 3 of them under hot water and extra rinse and have no issues and just air dry in the laundry room.

You don't really do this? I can barely use the washer for the socks, my wife would flip coming home to sock stew!

After it's been washed. I'll boil it. Maybe Im lucky my wife works. I do most of my maint while she's at work. So I don't get yeld at for not spending time with her, also for using her dishes for fish stuff as well. Shh she has no clue the sock filters get washed in the washer. I'd probably be killed.

Ok I have started using my i tech 100 again this week on a new system and I cannot find the beginning point to keep the skimmer running without it overflowing. I remember on my last system I ran the point somewhere just off center after the breaking in period but right now no matter what the cup fills pretty quickly.

With the white dot closest to the skimmer body being #1 where should I start? I know little movements make a huge difference with this skimmer but I cannot run it at night or while at work to make sure.

I looked for their forum but could not find it either.

Thanks.

Is the water level in your sump higher than it was in the other system ?

Ted as you were typing I was getting a ruler.

Yes it is higher.

When I designed this sump it was based upon water depth for the skimmer at 6.75 inches but for whatever reason it is at 8. I must have measured wrong. I will have to adjust it to the correct level.

My old system ran 12 inches deep but I had the skimmer on an eggcrate platform so it ran at the correct depth.

Thank you for your time. I hope I can see some nog in the next few days.

Anyone have issues with the tunze pump power cord getting brittle. Already sent my pump in once and tunze replaced it due to the outer insulation pulling away from the epoxy. Now my new one is starting to do the same. Cord part that is submersed is getting brittle again.
