Hello everyone.

I’ve had fresh water tanks for about 12 years now, but this is going to be my first venture into the world of salt water tanks.

I’m in the process of setting up a 90 gallon FOWLR tank with reef friendly fish and then I will slowly add corals and make it into a reef tank. Just want to take it slow so I can learn along the way BEFOR I do something silly and mess things up.

Right now I have a 90 gallon tank (drilled with a built in overflow), and a 30 gallon sump. I will have to re-seal the 90 gallon, change the compartment sizes on the sump, and build a stand before I get started. I found a good deal on a used set-up without lights and a stand.

I am looking forward to participating and learning here.

New to the hobby of SW. Currently looking for a first tank, I don't have my old FW tanks so it's brand new to me. Spent the last week researching it and looking on craigslist and local aquarium websites for used (cheap) equipment.

Keep looking, the deals are out there, you just have to be patient. Every thing I have in my tank was used and more then half the price. Good luck

You are going down the right path, I did the same thing, with a fish only and worked my way up to a reef tank.
Be sure to start a new thread documenting your progress. And to get ideas for tank stand ideas check out this thread.

hello - new to the forum - 125 gallon reef tank

hello fellow reefers,

let me introduce ourselves - si & gina aka ocfishaddicts... my husband and i have been in the hobby for approx 5 years and recently graduated last april from a 90 gallon bow front to a 125 gallon bow front reef tank --- we are definitely addicted and really splurged with our current tank. the challenge is that we opted to spend money for tank maintenance for the past 4 years since we figured from experience we would be spending it one way or the other on dying fish/coral or tank maint... it has been working well with fishmax.com taking care excellent of it, but now we need to learn more since i have gone crazy and have completely loaded it up with corals and fish and now trying to learn the right combinations of chemicals, food, etc... did i mention it is loaded/completely filled with coral and now really concerned it doesn't crash -- seriously i almost crashed my tank by forgetting to turn the pump back on from feeding and found fish gasping and corals drooping in the morning before we were to leave for the weekend... still having nightmares about it.

Our current 125 gallon bow front setup: 60"x18"x30" clear for life acrylic tank, LED lights (3 units of 90 lights (2 watts) - white & blue), 2 18 mag drive pumps (for strong current "“ husband didn't want power heads or any pipes showing), 60 gal custom sump with refugium, 2 8" socks, G4 skimmer, reef keeper digital assistant, etc. the tank is really loaded with soft corals, zoas (addicted with 32 different types), elegance, duncans, neon toad stools, neon hammer head, neon star polyps, torches, various mushrooms, various leathers, bam bams, acons, candy canes, brain, fan, red chili, cold coral, frog spong, feather dusters, coca worms, sponges, rock anemone, other anemonies, and lots of others/fish "“ sea apple, banded shrimp, camel shrimp, cleaning shrimp, harlequin shrimp, blue tang, yellow tang, sail fin tang, six line rass, sea beta, midas blenny, starry blenny, diamond goby, orange clown, onx clown, maroon clown (yes, they get along and orange and onx have mated and the orange female goes between the maroon and onx hosting each day) etc.

Oh ya"¦ we also have a 12 gallon and 6 gallon cube saltwater with some coral, a freshwater 6 gallon cube, fresh water 10 gallon wall / picture tank, a small koi pond and a couple of beta bowls, did I mention we are addicted?

We are definitely looking forward to learning more from fellow reefers - thank you in advance =)

Hello everyone. I just bought my first saltwater tank it's a 2 year old 28g Nano Cube HQI. Still trying to figure everything out, sometimes the hard way! Bought the cube from a family who downsized then decided to go bigger again. I have two clowns, a coral beauty, and a pseudochromis. Pin cushion sea urchin a brittle star fish and some small amounts of coral. Couple zoanthids, xenia, a kenya tree, and some mushrooms.

Hello All

Hello All

Hello all. Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Wes. I'm getting back into the hobby after a 5 year absence. Working toward a 55 mix. Started the pump Friday, so we've got a ways to go! Look forward to meeting some people and learning a lot.

Hello,

My family and I got into the hobby a couple of months ago when I purchased a used 125 gallon setup. I recently finished cycling and added our first inhabitant. He's a snowflake eel my son named Ace.

Our tank is a FOWLR setup. I have a smallish (~30 gal) sump. Looks like I will need to upgrade my sump when I upgrade my skimmer. Most are too large for this wet/dry filter converted sump. I purchased a BlueLine 30 HD external pump to create additional room and tank circulation. I don't have a reference point, but it is too loud IMHO (and my wife's).

That's it for now. Looking forward to learning and hosting a happy and healthy tank.

if you haven't noticed already, things have changed quite a bit in the last 5 years. It seems that there is always some new idea or product coming out making things easier. Hope to see a thread of your tank soon.

Huh, bluelines are supposed to be somewhat quiet, of course there's going to be a hum but if there's something that sounds out of the ordinary, there maybe something wrong with it. Or it could need a break in period.

Hello all. I'm new to the site somewhat. I poked around a little bit a few months ago when I started toying with the idea of getting back into the hobby. Well yesterday the wife and I purchased a brand new 100 gal. reef ready tank, top, light strip, and stand. The tank is made by DAP. I was told this is the previous owner of Oceanic. The dimensions are 48"x20"x25". I need to start researching to make a list of must have equipment and equipment that is nice to have but not necessary to have a successful reef tank.

I pick up my tank this sunday. The store I bought it from is a pretty successful reef store. I have a $150 light allowance that was included with the price I paid. If I decide I need more or better lighting I can add to the $150 to get what I need. Anyway I'm excited to be here and to start learning!

Hello guys and gals , i guess i should have started here before jumping into the forums , please excuse my manners, My name is Kenny , i am fairly new to Saltwater tanks, I had a chance to start off somewhat big , and i ran with it , my first and current tank is a 220 gal dt with a 60 gal sump, i have been running it as a FOWLR for a little over a year now , and now i would like to get into reefing , i just upgraded my lights to t5's (2, 4x48" fixtures , running a 12000k, a figi purple, and 2 true actinics in each) i have maybe 350 lbs of live rock and a 2 inch sand/coral bed. so far my tank houses a large one spot fox face, a orange stripe tang , a regal tang , a coral beauty ,cross hatch butterfly, a sailfin , large school of blue/green chromis and a queen angel. along with lots of snails , crabs and a few serpent stars , and a big bristle star (Hercules), who is in time out in the sump right now. i have learned so much so far and had so many ideas , i am looking forward to starting my journey in corals, and look forward to all the help i can get.
