If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hi, I'm new to reefcentral. I have a 72 gallon tank (bow front) with a fish-only with live rock setup. I have about 50-60lb of live rock and 2 clownfish (A. Ocellaris, tank-bred). I have a Remora Pro skimmer, the Fluval FX5 and a 15 gallon QT.

sounds like a nice setup---can you post some pictures of it?

You really don't need the fluval on your system---you could take out all the filter media and just run carbon in it.

Hello everyone. Just cam across this site tonight while searching for images of reef tanks online. My name is nick and i live in Minnesota. I am brand new to this hobby and i am just trying to learn as much as possible about everything. I recently got a 125 gallon cornerflow tank from my wife as a birthday gift. I have always wanted to have a reef tank so i am pretty excited for it all. I have spent the last few days talking to as many people as possible at various stores as well as people i know who currently have tanks. I picked up a recirculating skimmer this morning and am looking at lighting right now. Pretty sure i am going with a halide/t5 combo with moon lights. Still looking for the right sump/heater etc. Any input is appreciated.

the halide/t5 combo is an excellet choice

generally, run the biggest sump/refugium that you can

I am looking at a 30 gallon acrylic sump tank that someone local to me has for sale. The only part that makes me unsure of it is that the area designed for the skimmer is a little too small to fit the one i already bought. It could fit into the main chamber of the sump just fine. Being new to all this i don't know if that is acceptable or not, or if it would limit my ability to put other components into the sump.

Hey folks,
Just got into the hobby when my setup was GIVEN to me. I have a 75 gal oceanic setup with with a refugium made from a rubbermaid container. It also has a oceanic bio filter with protein skimmer(not hooked up yet). Just got a new light setup for it and some more inverts to clean up the tank. The previous owner did very poor maintenance and im looking to get the tanks health up a bit before adding anything more.

welcome to the forum pete :)

im sure the tank will be in good hands now you own it.

Hi! I just joined RC today! My husband encouraged me to join, so here I am. He is on RC everyday and has learned so much about the hobby. This will definitely be a great way for me to learn more as well.

I was introduced to the hobby about a year ago when I met my husband. I fell in love with Clowns and Mushrooms!!! My new love, though, is the Porcupine Puffer.

We are currently working on putting a 240 gallon tank in the wall, the thread is on here somewhere. I am learning to take care of a 6 gallon Nano and a Cleaner Shrimp. I have a lot to learn before I am let loose on the big tank.

Thanks for welcoming me to RC!!!!

Welcome, thanks for visiting.

Then you should love this 1/2" little guy I collected last week

can you post the link for the 24gal build--I would like to follow it

Hello all-

I've got a 75 gallon aquarium that I started 2 years ago when a buddy of mine was getting out of the hobby. I've been fascinated by the underwater world ever since I got my scuba certification about 10 years ago. How cool is it to keep part of the ocean right in your own living room?!

After a shaky start the first year, with more than half of my fish and coral dying, my tank's been nice and stable for the last year. While all of the fish are happy, I'm now trying to improve all of my parameters so that the coral I have begin to really thrive.

I have to say I didn't have a good resource for learning what I needed to do to have a successful reef, but ever since I found Reef Central a few months ago I've had a new-found confidence that I can do this - and that without going broke.

My dream is to build my own 225 gallon setup in 2-3 years (inspired by several tanks of the month), but for now I'm working on having my current setup thrive.

Howdy to all, and thanks to everyone for your input on this site.

Hi

I just started a new 55 gal reef tank, I am fairly new to doing my own saltwater reef but my family has had saltwater tanks all my life. I am setting it up as a low to moderate light tank, lighting is really expensive, with some soft corals, mushrooms, etc... I have just started cycling the tank 3 weeks ago so far so good. I have had an explosion of red algae which I have read is normal and my ammonia and nitrates have continued to go up, so the cycle seems pretty good so far.

Anyway this is my current setup:
55 gallon 48 inch long tank
wet / dry filter in sump with bio balls
48 inch 130 watt 50/50 lighting
40 lbs live sand
40 lbs dead rock
5 lbs live rock
6 green chromis

to be added Soon:
Canister Filter w/Activated Carbon
Protein Skimmer
Several Turbo Snails
Several Hermit Crabs

Eventually
Blue / Yellow Jawfish

I am a little confused about the 40 lbs dead rock to 5 lbs live rock.
Do you mean base rock?

Just dropping in to say hello. My local salt water shop pointed me in the direction of the website before I went out dropping a bunch of cash.

I went in looking for a a smaller nano system, and walked out with nothing but this website and advice to do more research.

Originally I thought having a small reef tank would probably be a little less challenge, but after listening to the advice I might have a change of plans. Probably will not see me post much on the boards, but I'll be out there lingering about reading threads and doing my research.

yeah sorry, dead rock = base rock

IMO you could run into problems with that ratio of live rock to dead rock.
I would suggest 60 per cent live to 40 per cent base rock.

The base rock will see with aerobic bacteria and the nitrifying anerobic bacteria and will take a little longer then live rock.

However alot of base rock is very dense and non porous. IMO this rock lacks some of the capabiity to house the denitrying anaerobic bacteria. These bacteria convert nitrates to harmess nitrogen gas completing the nitrate cyce in your tank.
Live rock being very porous can support all three strains of bacteria thus being very effecient biological filterers.

That is a very good life fish store LFS to advise you to do further research---one to use in the future when you get your tank.

Smaller nanos are a litte less forgiving of new reefer mistakes then are larger tanks. The 24 gal cubes are a nice way to start.
If you check on my web site you will see a good example of one.
Just press the little red house icon.

Hey all.

Noobie reefkeeper here from Los Angeles. Recently purchased a cadlights 22 gallon with T5HO lighting. I'm almost ready to get some live rock and begin a cycle. I'll definitely have a bunch of questions later on. Wish me luck!

BTW, any suggestions on where I could get good nano-sized live rock online?
