Hey all.

Noobie reefkeeper here from Los Angeles. Recently purchased a cadlights 22 gallon with T5HO lighting. I'm almost ready to get some live rock and begin a cycle. I'll definitely have a bunch of questions later on. Wish me luck!

BTW, any suggestions on where I could get good nano-sized live rock online?

interesting tank--can you post some pictures of it?

I would buy the live rock locally so you know what you are getting
If the pieces are to big just take a hammer and chisel and split them up.

Here's some pics. Not exactly the best quality...I took them with my camera phone a few minutes ago. I'll post some better ones when I get it up and running. Did a test run with freshwater a week ago and it runs fine. No leaks and equipment works well.

Next to the tank is an Aqua Euro Chiller. It gets hot in my room some times.

Newbie here

Newbie here

Hi all!
I'm a newbie and just wanted to post my newness to the reef keeping world. I have been reading all kinds of information on reef keeping and of course I plan to make reef keeping something I do correctly.
I just bought my first piece of equipment off Ebay of a used protein skimmer. I was thinking my next purchase would be a RO DI Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration System. Of course I have been checking prices and reading information regarding different brands but I don't want to waste my money on one that is not going to do the job correctly. Any suggestions on a good RO DI Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration System would be very helpful to me.

Hi Ron,

This may help answer your questions, RO/DI FAQ on what to look for. In genenral a system will have a couple of prefilters and an carbon block filter that removes chlorine and chloramines. That is important as both will destroy the RO membrane that follows. You didn't say what size tank you plan but a system rated at 75 gpd is usually fine and rated output is almost always higher than what the system actually puts out. The last stage is the DI portion and is is the most frequently replaced unit as it has a finite live time. You can add all sorts of bells and whistles if you have the cash but a base unit runs around $150-200 for the better brands.

Will do. I'll be getting RO this week from the LFS, then some live rock probably by the end of this week. I'll take some better pictures and post them soon.

Thanks that will be a great help.
I have also read so much information about live rock and the time it takes to cure it and home made reef rock I also plan on buying stock tanks to do this in my basement and after using them for curing the rock use the for my sump, refugium, and maybe frag tank. I'm sure all infromation you have will be helpful.

Thanks
Ron

when you first setup your tank let the live rock cure right in the tank. Keep track of ammonia and nitrates. If the ammonia spikes high be prepared for a water change if you want to preserve any of the life that has hitch hiked in on the live rock.
when that live rock has cycled then you can split some of it up between the sump and the refugium--if they are all part of the same water column or system then it does not matter where the rock is situated to be effective in filtering the whole system.

I am new to reefing, but not saltwater. I have a 55 FOWLR tank and a 34 Solana that I just started up Friday to be my reef tank. I think forums like this are the best way to gain knowledge in this hobby, because everybody does something different, and something different works for everybody. Hearing how everyone manages their tanks, just helps me in setting up successful saltwater aquariums, which I am totally ADDICTED to.

Hi Everybody!

Hi Everybody!

Just thought I'd swing in and introduce myself. My name is Tyler (aka BillDalton), I am 24, live in a podunk town in eastern washington, and because of the fact that my sleeping has been disrupted (caused by my inability to stop thinking about reef tanks) I've decided I must embark on the "reef tank journey," in order to reclaim my beauty rest.

Here's a small rundown of the situation. Right now the plan is (for now) to build a framed MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) tank. The reason I want to build my own is for a few reasons

- in order to customize the dimensions
- mainly to have both a starphire glass viewing panel AND a large Gyre style overflow (basically I want a long narrow slot for an overflow in the back of the tank in order to maximize detritus removal before it gets to the sump and filtration of the tank (this will be done through a diy "self cleaning overflow filter."
- because I want too many holes in the bottom and sides of the tank for a structurally sound glass or acrylic aquarium
- to incorporate a custom sealed to tank hood, stand, & cabinetry to help deal with humidity issues
- to save $$$ on a large tank

I plan on doing a mixed reef. I am going to use an Apex aquacontroller and automate as much as possible.

Like many others, I got my first fish tank when I was around 8-10 and remember having at least some kind of fish, turtle, lizard, or creature in a tank ever since, but I hadn't really started truly researching and learning about information besides what the novice wal-mart fish keeper knew until becoming interested in reef tanks a few months ago.

I have been (obsessively) researching for the last 3 months (while neglecting my other duties) and look forward to learning and sharing the progress of my new project with other people enthusiastic about holding animal hostages in small glass cages!
