Isn't it great that so many people can be right:D

There is even a remote possiblity or chance for both PaulB and Waterkeeper to be right at the same time:lol:

Just thought I'd swing in and introduce myself. My name is Tyler (aka BillDalton), I am 24, live in a podunk town in eastern washington, and because of the fact that my sleeping has been disrupted (caused by my inability to stop thinking about reef tanks) I've decided I must embark on the "reef tank journey," in order to reclaim my beauty rest.

Here's a small rundown of the situation. Right now the plan is (for now) to build a framed MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) tank. The reason I want to build my own is for a few reasons

- in order to customize the dimensions
- mainly to have both a starphire glass viewing panel AND a large Gyre style overflow (basically I want a long narrow slot for an overflow in the back of the tank in order to maximize detritus removal before it gets to the sump and filtration of the tank (this will be done through a diy "self cleaning overflow filter."
- because I want too many holes in the bottom and sides of the tank for a structurally sound glass or acrylic aquarium
- to incorporate a custom sealed to tank hood, stand, & cabinetry to help deal with humidity issues
- to save $$$ on a large tank

I plan on doing a mixed reef. I am going to use an Apex aquacontroller and automate as much as possible.

Like many others, I got my first fish tank when I was around 8-10 and remember having at least some kind of fish, turtle, lizard, or creature in a tank ever since, but I hadn't really started truly researching and learning about information besides what the novice wal-mart fish keeper knew until becoming interested in reef tanks a few months ago.

I have been (obsessively) researching for the last 3 months (while neglecting my other duties) and look forward to learning and sharing the progress of my new project with other people enthusiastic about holding animal hostages in small glass cages!

There are a few great threads on here with guys that have build wooden tanks--I'll see if I can find some for you

Hi all,

New here, started in marines this year. Have a Fluval Vicenza 260 tank (bow front, 4ft x 1ft (1.5ft) x 2ft tall), sump with cheato, return and skimmer, 30kg live rock total. Livestock : 3 blue/green chromis, 2 black and white clowns, 1 banggai cardinal, 1 dart goby, several hermits, emerald, snails and 2 cleaner shrimp. Plus, sarcophyton, sinularia and green star polyps. Water movement by Koralias (soon Vortech or Tunze...)

Hello Everyone, my name is Barbara, I have been doing SW for about 3 yrs now and been into FW for about 10. I am new to this site. I am in the process of setting up a new nano and figured I better sign up since I have never done anything smaller than a 60 SW. I feel the bigger the better but wanted to do something for inverts/corals only.

Here are some pictures of my tanks and fish.

This is a picture of when I first started

This is Razor, a saddle back grouper. We call him Razor because he ate our favorite purple tile fish. And I dont know how many of you know what that is, but it is an expensive fish and very hard to come by!

Hi PJ

It is not to often I greet a Newbie that has just acquired a real deal on corals. See Balanopyyllia's first post

Hi everyone! I joined RC about a week or so ago, but this is the first time I ever posted. Im starting a 20g reef tank pretty soon, so Ive just been reading several books and topics here on RC. Hopefully once i get it started ill be able to take some pictures for everyone :D

Hi Jay
[welcome]

Reading will help you make wise decisions on that new tank. It is all here, including been there and done that, so we hope you will find the site a treasure house of knowledge.

Welcome Jay, and taking pictures is a good Idea. Whenever someone posts a picture of their tank, Waterkeeper sends them a signed 8X10 glossy of himself in a Speedo. It's something to cherish forever.

Let us know when you get the tank started but whatever you do, take advice from Waterkeeper and not me. I am too radical I am told

Don't tell WK I said that ;)

I believe wk is standing in front of a tank with a rugf too;)

Thanks for posting that plywood build Capn. I am almost ready to begin building, which will probably take quite a long time, but hopefully not too long, and post the progress.:bum:

Hi everyone, my name is Nick, I'm new to RC and new to the reef tank in general. I have been researching them for a couple years now(I've had 2 freshwater tanks that I recently took down and distributed the fish to family members). I had a few opportunities to buy large already established tanks for really nice prices, but I decided to go with a 20g nano reef to keep costs down to start.

That being said here's my setup:

20g tank 30x12x12
17lbs Marshall Island LR
15lbs CaribSea Super Reef
1 65w Dual Daylight, 1 65w Dual Actinic w/ moon lights
2 hydor koralia nano's on wavemaker timers
Reef Octopus HOB skimmer
100w Marineland heater
2 penguin 100 filters

I have a couple questions, I'd like to have the best filtration I can.

Will my 2 penguin 100's be enough mechanical filtration along with the Reef Octopus?

penguins = 100gph x 2
skimmer = 225gph

I plan on having small colonies(6-10 heads) of zoos, montipora(once I make sure my calcium and magnesium levels are right), mated pair of clowns with a bubble tip anemone(id like a rose), and a small tang, as well as some inverts. These are just my plans and may change at any time :)

With the live rock you have, the protein skimmer and the flow you do not need the hob filters. I would suggest running one just with carbon and no other filtrate material--or you can take them both off giving more viewing room for the tank.

I am an old salty dog who is coming back to the reef. My first reef tank was about 15 years. It was a ******* 125 tall with a built-in wet/dry. Since wet/dry soon passed from the scene, I removed the bio-ball set-up and used the area as a kind of sump for carbon sock bags and other occasional needs. The coil for my chiller was also there as well as the probes for my Neptune Octopus controller. I bought my first live rock from Jon Warner way before there was a Warner Marine; we unpacked the whole 100 pounds in his kitchen to make sure that it was OK. As I became a bit more knowledgeable, in addition to my 4 VHOs, I added two 400 watt halides. Some controller, I forget the name, turned all the lighting on with a lunar cycle. I added a calcium reactor about a year later as my SPS took off. About 8 years ago, I had my first major disaster. The Neptune failed at the same time the heater stuck in the on position. It cooked the whole tank. I started over. 5 years ago, prior to an extended trip to Germany, I tore the whole think down again. That brings me to today. I am gearing my tank up again. Boy do I have a lot to learn about contemporary methods!
