If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hi All,

I just found this forum and love all that I have read on here. Seems like a great bunch and is the forum I chose to join y'all on because of that :-)

I have had previous experience with a reef tank (75g) a number of years ago and was able to successfully maintain it for a number of years... until it crashed hard and I had no idea why. I pretty much gave up because of two things. 1- I was pretty sure that the "cheapo" way I approached the tank was a direct influencer to the ultimate crash and burn 2- I wanted to do a bigger tank, but not until I could get my knowledge up and also address #1.

As circumstances have it, I have #1 covered now (from the expense perspective and being able to put a decent system together without skimping on what is needed to be successful like lighting, skimming, monitoring and automating). Now I'm putting a lot in the knowledge part of #2.

Currently I'm building out a 220g tank setup. I started by building my own stand and canopy for it that addressed a couple things. First, I wanted a taller stand, I hate having to bend over to admire the tank :-) and second, I wanted to have no center dividers in the equipment bay underneath, so I engineered to not need them. I'll post pics a bit later. I watched and read all the information from Mark Callahan that I could get my hands on as well as started lurking on reef forums to gather as much intel as possible, and then started buying stuff :-)

So far I have collected the following:
1- Vertex alpha 200 skimmer
2- Ecotech Radion xr30 pro light fixtures (x3)
3- 45g custom sump
4- Reef flow 4500 GPH external return pump (dart gold)
5- Neptune systems Apex gold with the leak detection module and 2 dosing modules
6- 220g corner flow marine life tank
7- 215lbs of dead rock
8- 185lbs of dead sand
9- Bottle of Dr. Tim's nitrifying bacteria
10- BRS 6 stage RODI unit
11- 275g IBC foodsafe water storage container for RODI freshwater storage

I've started building out the system and have completed the stand, tank and plumbing. Now I'm working on the electrical (lights and monitoring systems), and hope to put sand and rock in sometime next week. Maybe even start filling the tank at the end of next week... who knows :-)

Anyway, just thought I would introduce myself and give you a little background. If you see me posting total noob questions, be patient with me, I'll learn!

Thanks all, looking forward to a lot of great sharing here,
-Adam

Hi all,

I'm such a noob I don't even have my tank set up yet!

Early to mid-September, I'll be setting up my tank.

Some of the specs are as follows:

Nuvo Fusion Nano 20 tank
EcoTech MP10 wireless powerhead
Apex Neptune controller
AI Hydra 26 light
2 custom caddies (they go in the back [similar to a sump] of my tank.
-One will have additional area for bacteria to grow (http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/marinepure-ceramic-biomedia-plate.html)
-The other will act as a refugium, hopefully with chaeto and copepods
A small reactor that will fit in the 'sump', for GFO and carbon
A skimmer that will fit in the 'sump'.
A refugium light (controlled by Apex to be lit opposite the DT light)
20 lbs. of live rock (been curing for over a month now)
Tunze 3155 auto top-off system (again, controlled by Apex)

If you have any comments, advice, and/or questions, please let me know.

I look forward to learning from, and contributing to, this great forum!

Nice tank!

I'm curious, though; many opinions I've heard recommend starting with fish first, then clean-up crew, then corals. So, I'm wondering why you started with clean-up crew first.

The current plan is to fill the tank with water sand and rock, add the Dr. Tim's bacteria dose, then add a single hardy fish to get some ammonia going. Settle down and run the tank this way for a few weeks, then introduce another fish.

Hi there, I've just become the proud owner of my first reef tank, an Interpet RR94, and thought I'd better get myself set up to ask some newbie (stupid) questions.
The tank has been cycling for about a week now, and everything appears to be going as expected from reading the set-up articles on here.

Keep your fingers crossed for me!

i'm completely new to the hobby and

looking forward to have tons of info about aquatist~

nice to get with friend with you :wavehand:

Hey everyone. I'm not truly new, but I've never taken the time to post in this thread. I've been in the hobby for around 6 or 7 years, and I've been lurking this site for almost as long, though I didn't create an account until sometime more recently. Just wanted to give my formal hello to ReefCentral. These forums have been extremely helpful. Looking forward to much more lurking! :)

Welcome to the forum everyone:wave:

In the top section of this forum is an excellent sticky called setting up. It is basically a book with multiple chapters. Some info will be useful now and other info later, I highly suggest giving it a read. Good luck to everyone.

New Nano Reef Biocuber Here

New Nano Reef Biocuber Here

Hey everyone.

First off, I want to say thanks for all the information I have compiled over the last 6 months when I purchased my Biocube 29. The information was very useful to getting to my tank where it is today.

With that, I do have a biocube 29 in which I am building my first nano reef. So far my living stock are: ocellaris clown, panther grouper (my gf really likes it but I would be ok without it), royal gramma, urchin. Invertebrates: torch, plate and hammer coral along with a devils hand leather coral. Also, a rose tip anemone.

My mods: koralia powerhead, aquamaxx hob protein skimmer, aquaillumination prime led light. I have my chamber two set up as a refugium with macro algae, chemi pure and purigan. chamber 1 heater and a phosban packet, chamber 3 stock pump.

So far so good with the system as corals doing well, anemone hidden and smaller then when I got him...took me about 6 months to finally feel somewhat comfortable with what I have going on and looking to add more coral as the parameters seems to be in the ideal range but obviously can improve.

Tested yesterday
Salinity 1.024
Mg: 1300
Ca: 420
Alk: 8.2

Hope to share some information when I can and look forward to interacting with other members.

Mark

Brand New!

Brand New!

Hello my name is Jennifer and I am super brand new to the whole saltwater tank thing. I'm learning as I go and researching things before I put them in my tank. However I would love to post pictures of my tank so all the experienced people can assist me with what's good and bad.
My tank has been setup for approx 1 1/2 months.
I bought a 65 gallon tank that already had live sand. I am also working on getting better lighting, so my anemones are happier. I posted here yesterday due to a black grow on my sand. Found out what it was and what to do for it. So I've already had good advice and would love more please!!
Once my baby gets up I can post more pictures if anyones interested in a little one on one help. :-D

New to reef Central

New to reef Central

Hi all. Just wanted to stop in and say hi. I have just registered after just stalking for a few months. I am and I am not new to the hobby. I kept marine fish for 30 years before I had kids and amazingly my wife thought I should spend the money on them. :spin2: Ok, so did I, well now they are grown and out of the house, I am divorced (nothing to do with the tanks) and I am jumping back in after a 20 year hiatus. When I quit, I had a 300 reef built into the living room wall and a 100 gallon free standing in the middle of the room. Lighting was metal halide and actinic, no such thing as LEDs then. Fitration was 100% Tunze. I actually had to import mine from Germany because you couldn't buy it here. All 220 volt. I was pretty good at it. Had some beautiful tanks. Now, I feel like a newbie again so bear with me. I am getting ready to build a new home and set another tank in the wall. I jumped and bought a new, still in the crate Marineland 300 deep dimension tank on Ebay last week for 1000.00. It was delivered yesterday. Couldn't pass on the price. I am working with Torsten with Royal Exclusiv to design and build the filter system. I am looking at set 5C with some customizations. Lighting I am still up in the air about. Love metal halide (can't beat the look) and Kessil LEDs or a combination thereof. So... this is going to go slow as I am going to design and buy equipment so that when the house is complete, we will have a big setup weekend. Any help/and or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for letting me talk.
Jeff

Hello to all, my name is Johar I'm a 24 year old full time college student (nursing major) currently living in San Diego, CA. I'm prior military (Navy Hospital Corpsman). I'm still new to the reef tank hobby, but I do have a good amount of experience with fresh aquascapes and discus. I currently have a 45 gal tall tank that has a good amount of coral (zoos, torches, frogs, hammers, and mushrooms) that I am working on constantly.

Hey everyone, my names Jeremy. New guy from Rhode Island. Putting together a 90 gallon for some softies and some semi aggressive fish. It's not running yet, but hopefully soon!

Hi there

Hi there

Hi

My name is Julz and i'm very new to saltwater aquariums. I am cycling a new tank and am almost ready to add fish just a couple of kinks to work out. I have a 215 litre (sorry from NZ) tank not exactly sure what that is in gallons but probably quite little.
