Hi there,
My name is Alex. My girlfriend Morgan and I have a reef tank that has been going for about 5 months. Its a 40g breeder. We have about 2 inches of live sand. We have about 20lbs of live rock. The current live stock list is:
six-line wrasse
PJ cardinal
pair of tank raised occ. clowns
Firefish goby
and a Flame Angel that was recently added.
We have various LPS and soft corals. No SPS yet. Frogspawn, torch, ricordeas, zoas, candy canes, etc.
And we recently added a green BTA as a host for the clowns which they took to instantly, as they had been hosting the frogspawn before that.
CUC- hermits, astrea, turbo, and nassarius snails, two conch, a peppermint shrimp and a sexy shrimp.
We used to have an emerald crab but I haven't seen him in over a month.
Hardware is:
Two Koralia 425's and one Koralia 600
Reef Octopus BH1000 HOB Protein Skimmer
Two Little Fishies Phosban Reactor
A Mechanical Filter that I've added Seachem's de-nitrate to in a filter bag.
We also have a Odyssea Snake Eyes LED light fixture. Which has 56 3W LEDs

Thanks!

For all intents and purposes Newbie

Hi all. Getting back into the aquarium hobby again. It's been over 15 years though so I'm considering myself a newbie.

Details:
65 gallon soon to be reef tank
40 gallon sump

My nitrogen cycle started today. I set it up and finally got it running yesterday and there was ammonia in there today. I'm using Marco rocks (45 lbs), LFS live rock (10lbs), 1" sand bed in DT and 2.5" in refugium. Also have about an inch of lava rock in the refugium as well. I'll be adding some more Marco rock in the near future.

So I'm pretty excited. I'm going to get a QT set up this week so I can start doctoring some fish while my cycle is happening. Not in a big hurry. (I'm lying. I'm in a huge hurry. But I've read enough to calm down and take it slow)

My goal is to have another 65 tank next to this one and run both off the 40 gallon sump. I'll have to get a bigger pump but I picked up a used Reef Octopus skimmer that is rated for 200 gallons I think. (rescued it really. guy had it sitting in a tub of freshwater after it didn't work in his freshwater tank and it was filthy.)

I used to have a 10 gallon that I turned into saltwater and I was a complete idiot back then. 2 clowns and an anemone and a domino damsel right off the bat with 2 small pieces of live rock that had what I thought to be feather dusters. Now I realize it was probably aptaisia. I went to college and let my mother keep it and she was just as ignorant and put seahorses after the clowns and anemones died. (or were killed by the damsel more likely) Of course they died too and the damsel lived for quite some time. When it died it was quite large and we shut the tank down. But like I said that was over 15 years ago.

Now I have all this great information from you guys to help me through this and keep me from being so scared to spend a little money on nice livestock. Looking forward to hanging with everyone and enjoying this hobby!

Hey Everyone,
I just wanted some advice on my marine tank setup. I currently have an empty 400L tank and a 150L sump, my sump is divided into three sections: moving fluid bed, refugium and return. I would like to house a mandarin goby and a shrimp goby. I'm concerned that if they don't take to being fed that they might exhaust the rotifer/copepod supply. I was just wondering if its possible/useful to set up a little sump where I culture these little critters which overflows ~30% a day into the main sump's return, would this be worthwhile or am I wasting my time?

Thank you all very much in advance
Steven

Guess I have been a member a very long time, but got out of keeping fish for quite a while.

Now that I have a house and will not be moving for the forseeable future I am now in a position to get back into keeping fish and marine life.

Currently I do not have anything but a 20gal tank that I set up to cure live rock while I did all of the hardware work for my 60 (building a stand, drilling, fabricating overflows, etc). I should hopefully have my larger tank going in the next few weeks, I'm almost there.

I also have a 46 bowfront freshwater that holds community fish. It's pretty boring compared to reefkeeping.

Anyways, thought I'd introduce myself and I hope to learn and contribut what I can to the forum!

Current Tank Info: I have a 92 gal Corner Tank, and way too many pieces of equipment to list really, (proud member of the reef central corner club)

Fairly new to the hobby

Fairly new to the hobby

Hi Everyone,
I am fairly new to the saltwater hobby (less than 2yrs). I got started after my father passed away & I took over his 75 gallon tank. I came up the curve fairly quickly and was able to restore water/fish conditions inside of a few months. It was a 75 gallon tank. I successfully transferred it from his house to mine, but sadly I did way too much after the move and the fish did not survive.
After restarting his tank it suffered structural damage, and had to get rid of the tank. In his honor, I purchased a new 75 gallon tank and am fairly confident it's cycled and ready.
Aside from the multiple benefits this hobby offers it is a means of keeping my dad's legacy alive with my daughter. Thanks for listening.

Does anyone know of any good links or advice for converting from canister/HOB filters to sumps? I do not have a reef ready tank, but am very interested in setting up a sump system.

Hello I'm Dustin,

I've been keeping all sorts of freshwater tanks from high tech planted to discus breeding, and I've finally caught the salt water disease. There's just so much info on this forum and I can't wait to begin my own reef!

Thanks!

Hello, my name is Amelia and I'm starting my first SW tank! I am doing a 5 gallon pico reef (yes, I know this may not be the easiest for a first timer but ready to take on the challenge) :bounce3:

My main concern now is if I need a skimmer, and what lighting should I use? I am planning on getting small Zoas and Button polyps and need sufficient lighting for them to grow and have beautiful color. I want the blue lighting option as well or integrated in to show off the coral's color.

PLEASE HELP

Hi All

Hi All

Hi all,

Stats:

75g reef tank and I am starting to slowly stock my tank.

The tank is about 3 months past the cycle

I currently have:
2 small clowns
1 orchid dottyback
1 purple fire fish

Additional info:
20 g sump (I may be upgrading this to a 35 g already so I can have a fuge)
Reef octopus skimmer
1 cleaner shrimp
7 snails (2 types)
2 hermit crabs
1 small red mushroom
1 small finger leather
Using RO/DI water
Orbit marine 48" LED
I plan on keeping low light LPS, leathers, mushrooms and polyps

Hey everyone! My name is Logan and I am new to reef keeping but decided to keep tropical for a few years before trying marine as to get to grips with the basics of fish keeping and water parameters ect. Have a few weeks ago purchased a mature fluval m90 with a gyre maker, digital controlled pump, standard skimmer i am looking to upgrade on a budget if anyone has any suggestions? Gonna make a thread asking about protein skimmers and reactors on a budget anyhow to try and get a good amount of responses. I then bought a TMC 900 which is doing a fab job. I am currently dealing with a cyano bacteria outbreak and trying to sort it out naturally but I don't seem to be getting anywhere other then the short term, have raised circulation, increased water changes and size of WC and want to add a nitrate and a phosphate riactor to try and control the underlying cause of the algae and cyano as the tank was cycled but in a state of disrepair when I bought it as he had not done a water change in months so the algae situation is out of control currently but I am slowly winning I think. My nitrate levels are still higher then desireable. My tank consists of two damsels, two cardinals, two peppermint shrimp, one cleaner shrimp, lots of mixed hermits, two standard clowns, one chalk goby and a mandarin fish. I look forward to continuing to learn and hopefully having to never clean every blinking rock with a tooth brush again!! Not managed to remove all the algae yet but will get there.
