If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hello all...wow, what a forum! This place is HUGE!

My name is Chad, I'm from NJ and was in this hobby about 10 years ago when things were a little more difficult. I dusted off my 72 gallon bowfront about 3 months ago, and I'm up and running....I was lurking here for a while and gained incredibly valuable information.

Thanks!

Things may appear to be easier now but IMO one should not be complacent and be duped by the industry that has really grown. The tried and true methods still in a lot of cases are the most reliable
eg water changes
lots of quality live rock
protein skimmers

Hi Everyone,

I thought I would start out on this forum by introducing myself. My name is Katie, and I have kept several freshwater tanks for the past few years. I have several takes set up at the moment: 150 Gallon CA/SA Cichlids, 80 Gallon CA/SA Cichlids, 70 Gallon Planted with Rainbowfish, Fancy Plecos, and Dwarf Cichlids, Several planted betta tanks, and an outdoor goldfish pond.

I have always been intrigued with the Saltwater side of the hobby, but have never had a real reason or the money to set up a reef tank. In a few months I am going to be moving to a much smaller place, and will have to sell my large setups. I figured that I would turn a bad situation into a good situation by using the money to set up a nano reef which is something I have always wanted to do.

I have done a lot of reading, and it seems like there is still so much to learn. I am sure I will have lots of questions for all of your guys, so bear with me!

Kate

Kate, we definately need more girls on here. There's just too many old dudes, like the guy above your post.

hello everyone. I'm new to the saltwater world, am setting up my first saltwater tank now (I have had a freshwater tank for the past 2 years). My tank is a 70 gallon tall tank with 2 175W metal halides. I have a hang on protein skimmer and a powerhead installed. i have alot of rock (not live rock)the tank is filled with saltwater, but i have not started the 'cycle' yet. Any suggestions on how I can start the cycle process? btw, I don't like to spend money, i built my stand, and refurbished a the light box...

sounds like a good start, id suggest another powerhead at least, 1 in a 75 gallon tank with plenty of rock might be a little light, but you have already got the majority of the kit and as for the cycle, you will need to drop a mashed up shrimp in to get things going, as the rock isnt live some reefers cure it in a garbage can in the garage because of the smell, you may be ok, depends on the rock, good luck anyhow and keep us informed on progress

Hi, my name is Donna and i'm a month into the game. and i realize this is like giving birth and raising kids. NEVER A DULL MOMENT! lol right now i have a 46g bow front that's a FOWLR now but big plans to go into coral. i built my own sump needed a little help getting it started but it's running. next i'm setting up a QT tank and then who knows were this will take me.

Ok.. so I'm new to this stuff. I'm Marcie! I've been given a tank for my husband and kids... and ya that's about where I am on this whole project... so what's next??? lol

hey everyone! name is Joseph, and ive had a 24 gallon AP several years ago but got out of the hobby dues to fianancial reasons and school... but now i miss it so much and im ready to get back into the hobby!! im looking for another 24 gal AP or nano to get started, so ya thats my story lol.

I have had several FW set-ups, and 12 years ago I had a 55g Reef. A transpacific move forced me to break it down and sell.

After several years in Hawaii where I had unlimited opportunities to view marine life firsthand, but was not permitted by law to keep corals in my tanks, I am back in NJ and ready to get started again.

I have bought a used 90g tank and stand, built a 30 gal sump, and have ordered a Reef Octopus Ext 160. I still need to get my lighting worked out, the setup came with a Coralife 48" 4x65W PC fixture and after much reading on here, I have decided not to use it. I would like a mixed reef tank, so I am looking at T5HO fixtures.

I will start a build thread when I am a little closer to actually adding water. I have been lurking for a while and just wanted to say hello and thanks to everyone who contributes here.
