If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

I am new to reef Cenral and would like to say hi. I sarted the saltwater tank April of 09 because I was offered to take a complete set up for free. Could not pass it up. I always wanted to have another fish tank since I been young.

55gl coallife 4 bulb 65watt each protien skimmer sump list goes on.

Have many hermit crabs, snails
have a sea hare
and few fish.
just put in a mated pair clowns
1 small clown
2 damsels
1 cleaner shirmp
and one pepperment shrimp

have a mushroom rock with over 12 heads
othe single mushrooms
torch coral
xenia that i think its not going to make it
2 #3 koralia pumps
1 #1 Koralia all for watermovement

i would say about 80lbs live rock

I choose not to use sand on the bottom as some suggested not to so bottom of tank is glass

Not sure what else I can say but I love this hobby cant wait to get a bigger tank

It would be nice to see a few pics of your setup

Hows it hangin. I've had a reef tank now for the past 5 1/2 or 6 years. Started with a ten nano and like a junkie moved up to a 30 then to a 50 tall(didnt like the flow) then to a 37 tall, and now finally a 55. Ive got 2 rena cartridge filters and a hanging protein skimmer on the back, with a viper mhd 150w on one side of the tank for my higher light corals and a coralife double cp on the other side. Mainly decided to join the community because after reading through alot of posts you guys seem to know more about it than me and I am always up for some learning and research. Knowledge is power!

Hey,

Thanks for having me.

The name is Doug, I'm 30 years old. I have had several freshwater tanks. I got out of the freshwater tanks about 3 years ago when my son was born. I had no time. So now he is 3. He seen his uncles tank and couldn't be pulled away from it..(approx 2yo 100gal reef with several assorted fish). So I cleaned out my starter 30gal.. I need to get a reef going for us to enjoy.

So I just wanted to say hi. I'll be around for a long time. (awesome site btw.) Any and ALL of my questions, and there will be many will be around somwhere on the forums.

Thank you for reading my long winded intro...

Oh, Nano power heads for a 30 gal? ow many? Am I going to need a metal halide for 30 gal? ( more concentratd on a reef than a fish tank...) Thanks.

Nice introduction

flow should be in the range of 20-40 times the volume of your tank or in your case 600 to 1200 gph
I would suggest a Koralia three which gives you about 850 gph

Anothed newbie here.....been at it about ten months now. My neighbor across the street has been keeping marine fish and corals for about 30 years. I have kept tropical in the past but never wanted to get in to saltwater, thinking it was too much maintainance, but she talked me into taking a 30 gallon that she had in the garage, and of course, now I'm hopelessly hooked. My wife found a completely outfitted 100 gal. saltwater tank at a yard sale for 75 bucks (!), so that's where I'm at now. Tank has been cycling for 4 weeks now....getting ready to start moving the 30 gal. occupants over to their new home. Anyone with any advice on this would be welcome. What a great and satisfying hobby!

Getting back in

Getting back in

I have had a Marine aquarium sense I was 12... (1971). In 1992 I tore down my reef tank—going through a divorce. I am getting back into it—life is good and I am truly blessed.

I am still acquiring equipment for my 75 gallon that I will plumb to the basement. I plan to start with softies and LPS and move to SPS. Things have changed a bit—lots to learn.

Great forum!

Larry

wow a lucky find--congratulations

I would suggest you start your own build thread on here. That way you can ask specific questions to your situation and the answers won't get lost in such a long thread as this one

Reefing seems to stay in ones blood. Your expertise will be welcomed on here.
You would be interested in this thread--PaulB's--he has the longest running tank probably in existance and he still can talk about it coherently:spin2:

Larry, they haven't changed much for me since 71, I still run my ug filter.
Welcome aboard, we need more older guys. Your not that old, but your getting there

Well at least I am not the oldest one on here, I don't think so anyway.
I am 60, with a show of hands, how many people are older?

Ok, put your hands down and type something

Thanks for the welcome. The years I was out, every time I went by a pet store I would stare at the reefs. It is time I got back into it. This forum is great! We have a great community in the KC area with lots of very good hobbyist that will help or give good info when asked—you can't put a price on that.

Paul B—good to meet you.

I thought I could just look away and that pull toward salt water would stop—not true. Then I went on a cruise (for my 50th birthday) to Grand Turk. Went diving again and that did it. I have a passion for Gods creation!

I am picking up a system piece by piece.

So far:

75 gallon tank with 2 corner "inky box" overflows

Aqua C EV180 Protein Skimmer* with Mag 7 pump (going to upgrade to a mag 9.5)

Model 1027 48" Extreme Orbit 2 x130 watt Sunpaq (1-Set Actanic/1-Set Daylight) with 4-Lunar Lights

2 - 250 wt MH SE lights

Gen-X PCX-40 Water Pump

30 gallon plex sump

RO unit

looks good but
go for ro/di unit exp if you are going to have sps corals

I think we need to start an old guys thread:dance:

I can add to that. I'm new to the forum, and agree things have changed a lot. I had a beautiful 135 in my living room back in 89-95. Two MH, two Actinics, two overflows and two returns in the bottom of the tank. Had a hole in the floor, and a Thiel Aqua Tech wet/dry in the basement. Two Little Giant pumps, Sanders Ozonizer, about a half a million Thiel Supertech bio-balls. Poly Filters and Chemi Pure finished off the water. I loved it, and had good luck... minimal losses overall, and healthy livestock. I'm pretty sure the secret to the success was the Thiel coil denitrator..:fun4: Anyhoo, I've always had a tank.. My first was a 5 gallon MetaFrame sealed with a tar like substance from the Top Value stamp store. I'm currently keeping discus, and slowly gathering parts for a small reef tank for my daughters room. I still love this hobby, and am looking forward to seeing the changes I've missed.

Hello salt, you must be an old guy like me. That black tar like stuff was called asphaltium varnish, but yes, it was tar. Not a very good product either but I guess it was all we had. Leaked all the time.

LegMan, I also like diving on Grand Turk Island, but I like diving everywhere so it doesn't mattter.
Nice to meet you

Hi, newbie here. Started this madness in January as a Christmas present for my disabled daughter. She spends a lot of time in bed resting or getting treatments. We put a BioCube 14 in her room in January. I had almost killed it by March...and then got serious.

Cleaned up things in the 14. 3 fish, a shrimp, some soft corals, etc. Nitrates about 2ppm and phosphates undetectable, bla, bla... Our "friend" who got us into this calls...they're moving...her 90 needs a home..."It'll fit right between the windows in Jen's room. No problem!" I'm a sucker for a project. I bit.

About 4 months later, there's a 90 gallon tank in my daughter's room. She loves it!! I'm sick with the bug, yet again. My life is a string of hobbies. Even my job is a hobbie of sorts, but that's another story.

10 weeks of prep as time permitted, and a move, and the realization that I had aquired a take near crash. Nitrates were 500+, Phosphates 7.0-8.0 near as I could tell. What was in there didn't all look great. A Niger Triggerfish died and some snails too in the first week. Went into action. All the corals that were left went into the nano (it's packed). Added an ATS. An RO/DI. WATER CHANGES!! Built a 125 gallon sump in the basement now "fishroom." Did a 90% water change...Nitrates have been undetectable and phosphates between 0.5 and 1.0 for the last two weeks.

Through all that, we lost three more snails and a big hermit, but the fish and shrimp are all looking good. The survivors: a flame angel, yellow tang, clown, tomatoe clown, three gobies, a fire shrimp, three anemonies, a few snails a hermits, and all sorts of critters in the rock (the tank had been up for 5 years).

And, all of a sudden...I feel like I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
