thank you for your reply, now i have to ask also, when you use dosing pumps or an air dosing set up and the bottles set thier how do they get shaken up so all of the good stuff will not come out first, on an air set up you would think the air would shake it up but the pressure will not allow this to happen, but an auto doser air will move all the good stuff around and thier for all the good stuff will not go in to your tank all at once, on DIY dosing they show how to build a dosing set up, but it dose not show you or tell you about shaking up the bottles

what exactly are you planning to dose??

Hi, my name is Gus and I am starting my first tank (90g w25g sump). I have it setup with live rock and it's cycling. Been running for about a week now. Got the rock used from someone taking down their tank. Have a couple blue legs in it that came with the rock.

I know everyone wants to see picks, here is the day one.

hi-gus, welcome to the forum, the rock placement looks great, however id suggest you get some water movement at the waters surface, it looks a little quiet in there.

Hello all,

I'm not new to fish keeping, but I'm an extreme newbie when it comes salt water tanks. I've had African Cichlid tanks before (love'em) and I planning on starting another one. My wife wants me to start a reef tank as well. I've always wanted to but heard it was very difficult, so I stayed away. We'll, now I'm going to give it a shot. It may be a couple months before I start cycling a tank, but I'm one who has to do a lot of research first. I really don't even know the basic setup yet. That's why I'm on these boards now. My current and early plan is the following:

75gl tank (4ft)
Live rock (not sure what kind or how much)
filtration HOB, SUMP, or Canister (not sure what I'll need)
Coral substrate
plenty of corals and anemone's
and of course fish.

So I will be surfing this forum a lot in the future and asking a lot of questions. Some probably very basic, so please bare with me. I am really looking forward to it. Thank you.

Hello,

I am very new to this hobby and looking for advice. My boyfriend and I first started a 55 gallon saltwater tank and didn't really know what we were getting into. The first floor of our house got remodeled so we transferred 2 live rocks (around 28 lbs), 2 blue damsels, 1 3 striped damsel, 1 clear damsel and lawnmower blenny into a 20 gallon tank. So far all of the fish have done fine in the smaller tank. We are really trying to do our homework this time and start the 55 gallon tank over the right way. We recently bought a AquaC Remora Pro Protein Skimmer that hangs off the back (no place for a sump) and are going to upgrade the lights. We've also got a Marineland Power Filter Emperor with bio wheel 400. If you guys could give me any advice for starting the 55 gallon tank over that would be great.

There are a lot of people on the site that have the same issues as you (no room for a sump) Feel free to ask as many questions as you have to to get your tank running right. also read up on here to get you stepping in the right direction.

I've just started looking through that thread. I have a few questions about curing the live rock. Since I've had mine already for a few months should I cure it? I am also going to add another 12 lb rock to it that my boyfriend's sister bought us from the fish store. How should I cure/cycle all of this?

I have to start by saying how addicting this hobby is. Started my tank back in March. Now it is all I'm thinking about. Everyday I have to look and see the growth of all the corals. I look forward to watching the tank grow out. I am already planning on a new and bigger tank.

I have two of the maxi pumps running (~300gph/ea) and my recirc from the sump/fuge (~700gph w/o head loss), but didn't know how to direct the recirc water flow... I pointed the recirc and maxi's to try to eliminate any dead spots, but don't know how to ensure there are no dead spots and ensure good flow so I kept the maxi's low in the tank.

Right now, just targeting a fowlr tank, but would like to add some softies sometime in the future. I am waiting for a vertex IN 180 skimmer and have to plumb the fuge yet. The tank is in the brown alge stage after about 7-8 days.

I have to add more sand (fine grain arganate) to this system too, can I add it without worrying about the tanks cycle, or should I expect the cycle to start over with the new sand?

I will post my thoughts on stocking it when I have the list together, plan to keep all small non-aggressive fish.

id suggest another ph pointing directly at the surface gus, as for the sand, yeah add it now, its such an early stage it wont be too much trouble

O.K. in keeping with tradition. About a year ago a bought a new 180 gallon front and sides starfire with dual overflows. After investigating cost of supplies, equip., lighting and all the other goodies, I turned the 180 into a fresh water. i did start a 30 gallon fowlr to see if my time and attention could follow my wallet with this hobby. I have had fairly good results (no deaths) so far, plus when the time came to convert the 180 i figured i would have some great stuff to seed it with. Well the time has come. My first big problem was when i built this beautifull stand, a sump was not in my thoughts. So now under the stand i'll have about 26" and still need to find a good quality protien skimmer to fiit under there. I'm figuring on useing a 55 long for a refug., currently looking at a typhoon 3 extreme for ro/di., lighting is still up in the air (prefer t-5's), but i know i will want some corals in there. have had great success breeding copepods for my manderin (9 months old). other than that still have a ton of questions, so I might start a build thread. [welcome] It sounds like you have your work cut out for you. I would suggest building another stand that will have more room under the tank to house everything. as far as differing opinions that's what the site is all about. Read the stickies they will give better explanation.
