If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hello everyone. I'm Sid from Atlanta, GA. I've gotten started in this hobby for my daughter who is just crazy about fish. I've purchased a used tank, equpment and live rock (actually not so live) and have been up and running about a month. Added some additional rock from the LFS and have got the cycle started. I've got lots of questions which I'll post soon. I've already learned a lot from Reef Central.:fish1:

it might be a good idea to start your own build thread right in this forum.
This thread is getting pretty long and your questions might get lost on it or not seen by alot more reefers

great looking corals---thanks for posting
You really should start your own build thread and post the pics there.
that way they will be appreciated by more reefers.
In a long thread like this information etc tends to get buried from the general view

hello all,
ive just signed up to RC and have a few 'testing years' of reefing under the belt but with plenty more to learn. Ive kept a couple of tanks in the last three years but i am currently setting my 180g reef.

I fired it up in November 2009 and started the cycle with a whack of LR, (150kg) which is giving me difficulties. It was uncured and left in frankfurt two days longer than intended so the die off was marked and thus algae heaven. But i'm taking it slow and am in no real hurry.

the algae is under controll for now, but the diatoms are off the chart, hopefully you guys can help me along with some ideas on their eradication.

looking forward to reading some of the threads on here and making some new reef buddies:)

hey everyone, new to reef central and the hobby. well new to the saltwater side. we have kept koi for some time and have moved the party indoors. so we have a 90 gallon tank w / a standard overflow system, sump tank, and protein skimmer. the tanks got just crushed coral and water for now. still researching the lighting options. this will be a reef tank so i'm doing my homework.

Hello Everyone
I am a brand new RC member and also at this hobby. My tank has been up and running for 7 days now. Amonia has not spiked yet. I bought a running setup off craigs list. My set up is 70 gal tank, berlin sump, 1/3 hp chiller, kent or-di, metal halide light, white and blue lights, timers, maroon clown, gobe, star fish, urchin, live sand, 90 lbs live rock with some kind of corals and things ? on it. I have a 110Octopus skimmer on order. I know absolutly nothing about taking care of this and I would greatly apreciate any member in the Port Richey area that would consider taking me under their wing and teaching me. I can be reached at 727-847-2791 or pcwsailing@verizon.net

I dont know that much about corals...i am new to the salwater business as well...ONE thing I know you will need for sure is a test kit so you can test your checmicals, such as magesium, calcium, phosphates, nitates and such....I would take a trip to your nearest saltwater aquarists store and start picking some brains.......this site is a good pool of info as well

Hello Reef Central!

I've been in the hobby for about 4 or 5 months. I've lurked reef central for the same time and have avoided a lot of noobish mistakes because of the forums. I figured it was about time to make a post though

You might want to borrow a diatom filter from someone and run that in your tank for 48 hours, that will really help

IMO I would remove the crushed coral substrate while you still can. It can become a nitrate and detrius trap after a year or so. Because it traps stuff so easy it tends to look dirty and is difficult to clean
I would suggest one inch of medium argonite instead

Depending on the condition of the live rock the ammonia might not spike.
If you have all the fish etc in their now I would use some Seachem Prime which is an ammonia blocker just in case the ammonia does spike or you could have a tank crash very quickly

Check in the reef clubs forums for a club in your area

BTW
You have just given your phone number out to 220,000 members and who knows how many more call centres etc etc.
I would email the moderator and ask them to remove it from your post
If you want to share phone numbers etc do it by private email.

hi rc

first post here been lurking for about a month and finally starting to buy stuff for my new 40 breeder. Im converting over from high tech planted aquariums and have a 125 and 75 planted aquarium that are coming down soon .... salt is so different thought I wouldn't have that much to learn and thought I would be able to use allot of my old equipment ...I was wrong ....let the spending begin !

beautiful fowlr tank--nothing wrong with sticking with it. If you want to go reef someday I would start with a biocube. You can load those up with corals and they do beautifully

It's always good to see someone take the slow route and learn as much as possible before jumping into this hobby. Good luck with your new tank.
