Hellloo Reefers

Hey there fellow reefers. I've been in the hobby since the 80s, largely South American and African Cichlids and a brief run with salt in the early 90s. After my salt tank crashed back then I took a break from fish and kept my dogs entertained. Now I'm back at it and wow how things have changed. Live rock and the Internet being the two biggest innovations since then :lolspin:

My revival began with a couple fish for my kids, then evolved into putting those fish into a planted tank. The itch kept going from there and now I've got a 120g plumbed for my first reef. I'll be dropping my live rock in this week and away I go.

Thanks to everyone in this community for sharing what they know. See you around the boards.

John

hello! My name is Sydney I am new to the salt water world, and currently completely overwhelmed with information. I have a 30 gallon tank awaiting it's saltwater still, if anyone has any advise about anything you would be my new hero!! I am also needing help with lighting...I like t5's and LEDS trying to find a reasonable price though.

Hello, Kevin here. Have the opportunity to finally get into salt water. Have been wanting to for 5 or 6 years and finally have a deal that I can't pass up. I certainly have plenty of questions, most of which have already been answered.

My boys and wife are going to love the aquarium once its set up. Hopefully its not as stressful as I am thinking its going to be.

Need help picking new tank mate's

Need help picking new tank mate's

First post for me! I need help in picking a new tank mate's. I currently have 2 Snowflake Clowns, 1 Yellow Tang, 1 cleaner shrimp, and a Yellow Watchman Goby. I have recently tried adding a Yellow Belly Regal Blue Tang he was quite smaller than the yellow tang. None of my fish even bothered looking at him and went on about their business. The yellow belly did not make it he lasted two days, I could not get him to eat any suggestions on housing a blue tang, or on picking a new tank mate? please help. I have a sixty gallon cube and about 50 lbs of rock. the tank set up has alot of swiming room I also have it set up with a sump with tunze skimmer. so all my equipment is down below allowing more space in the tank.

New to This

Hey everyone im new to the hobby and im looking for some direction, i have purchased a 55 Gal Tank and want to start up a Fowlr or possibly a Reef tank, although because im new i am just wondering if its all that difficult to start with a reef because from what ive read its quite complex.

i look forwarding to hearing from all of you!

Hi!

The name is Reny! I'm a husband, father, pet lover, artist, carnivore, fitness enthusiast, comedian, horrible breakdancer, narcissist, daydreamer, retired supehero, sushi eater (i won't eat your marine life), poet and New Orleanian... among a few other things.

I've been researching the last few weeks on building up my first marine tank and pretty much at the final stages. I've ordered my tank (50g, sump, skimmer, stand...etc) and think i'm set on starting with liverock and live sand from Tampabay saltwater (sorry if i'm not supposed to mention names). Anyone ever order from there? Once cycled...i have no clue what i'd like to keep in regards to fish. Originally I was interested in doing a ceph (octopus) only tank, but after more research I've come to the conclusion that would be a better idea for something down the road perhaps. I'd rather see a community of marine life working synergistic-ally to create a living piece of art in a tank!

anyways, i'll continue to lurk and learn...if you have any tips or suggestions I should read first, please point me in the right direction, comment below or msg me! I'm friendly and rarely ever bite!

I do have one main question, but i'll post it in another forum!

Level Below Newbie???

Hello gang! I'm in a pickle. Moving to Greeneville, TN area and home has a saltwater aquarium! I have absolutely no experience...none...nada in this area but I would love to learn. Is there anyone on here that lives in this area and knows someone who does tank maintenance, service and educating. Mainly educating...but I don't want the 3 fish that were left to die while being educated. Thanks for any help given.

Hi all, new visitor here. I have a couple small nanos at the moment, but looking to build something big.

Does anyone have any idea why any new topics I start don't show up on the thread list? I don't see any rules posted anywhere about posting restrictions, other than about commercial stuff.

Thanks!

Hello!

Hello!

I'm new to SW aquariums, but I have kept 90g freshwater tanks in the past. I have been browsing/snooping this forum for quite a while and I'm nearly ready to jump into my own SW setup so I thought it was time I joined. This site is a great resource.

I live in New Mexico, work and go to school fulltime so I need to keep time and money investment small to start with. I'm looking to get a Coralife Biocube. Would love the 29, but I think 14 is more practical to start with.

Not interested in fish at all at this point, I have a ridiculous fascination with corals and would like to get a variety of funky/interesting cleaners. I'm also an artist and am researching methods of creating reef-safe custom pieces. I'll be getting absolutely everything I need to get a good start before I jump in.

My main concern is availability of quality water. My tap water is horrible (we don't drink it unfiltered), and because my tank will be tiny I need to find a good way to get perfect water without R/O DI setup (maybe down the line...). I don't drive so buying and hauling either from LFS or even getting distilled from a grocery store to my home isn't practical. Would appreciate any suggestions on this.

Anyway, glad to be here! I already feel like I know a lot of you just from lurking.

Cheers

The quality of the water you place in the tank is the primary concern in every tank. If you are unable to invest in an RO/DI, and can not purchase water, you will be unable to keep a SW tank. I hate to be negative, but this is really the only way. You say that you can not drink your water without filtration, then there is no way you could keep corals in it. Some people are very lucky to have wonderful tap water. I am not one of those. I never enjoyed any success in this hobby until I got my RO/DI unit. I tried to buy water from my LFS, but always ended up being lazy, and adding my own tap water to the system. Every time I did this, I paid for it, or rather, my tank inhabitants paid for it. An RO/DI unit is one of the cheaper pieces of equipment you will need, but you need it as much as the tank itself.

Hello, hope i'm doing this right ^^ my name's Nicole, I live in Santo Domingo, DR, and I'm new to the hobby. I have a 1 and a 1/2 month old cycled SW tank and have added 2 clownfish sold to me as Percula (but may be Ocellaris, I can't tell the difference yet). My tank is a 30 gallon FOWLR. I don't use tap water, but buy 5 gallon water bottles and add "Red Sea Salt" to it. My pH is 8.2, sg 1.022-1.024, ammonia/nitrites 0, nitrates 0 though sometimes its a little darker than the yellow but lighter than the orange for 5ppm (ive been testing incessantly twice a day for almost two months now had a spike the second week of installing tank and things settled down after that). I've scoured the internet for advice and finally joined this forum. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks in advance :D Oh also when I started the tank I bought Nutrafin aqua plus and cycle, Zyme, Aqueon Ammonia Neutralyzer and a whole stock of things at the suggestion of my LFS. I did use the cycle and aqua plus but are they truly useful/worth it? I've found mixed opinions on these products. Oh and i've read "Clownfishes" by Wilkerson which had very good reviews on amazon, I'm following the guideline/tips/advice stated in that book.

edit: I have an Eheim classic 150 canister filter and hang on power filter and am using seachem matrix and purigem, I also bought paraguard and marine buffer but haven't needed them. I have a TOM protein skimmer but i'm not sure if thats really doing anything... I'm feeding a variety of Spectrum flakes/pellets and frozen cubes I got at my LFS.

Hello Reefers

Hello Reefers

I thought I had an account here but guess not :) anyhow HELLO!!!!! I am stubborn and opinionated and don't know nearly as much as I think I do-- these emotes say it all :headwally: :deadhorse: that's how I learn, that's how I love... PS F.U. DIY world....

Hello, RC, long time lurker, just began posting this week. I've been taming a 40 Breeder for around six months now with varied success. I've made some mistakes along the way, but I think reading others posts on here and my local club site have saved me some of the bad ones. I've been having some issues of late with either lighting or Alkalinity that has led to a few coral deaths and have sought out the folks here at RC to help set me straight. I am in it for the long haul, having just been gifted a fantastic 180 All Glass Reef Ready tank in need of re-sealing from a very generous local club member who I was helping with some Iwaki motor issues. That is what I love most about this hobby and the people that aspire to bring a piece of nature into their home; they bring a level of passion and commitment to the hobby and can surprise you with their generosity and well thought out advice because they want you to succeed as much as they have.

I'm looking forward to corresponding with some of you like-minded reefers!
Jeff
