If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hi there: My name is Thiyagi. I had a fresh water aquarium for about 4 years. I got an old reef tank last week which was up and running for a year. I do not have much experience in maintaining reef system. So, I would anticipate advice from experienced folks. Please pardon me if I a asking too basic stuff.

Thank you,

Thiyagi

Hey Everybody!
I'm just getting back into aquariums after taking off about 8 years, its been ~12 years since I set up a tank, and only freshwater at that. I always thought you had to be nuts to do a marine tank all the while wishing I could keep those pretty clowns/tangs/etc...

I got the bug again in late summer and I got a to good to pass up deal on a used 90 at the LFS on Black Friday weekend. So far The tank seems to be the cheapest part once I got all the rest going.

Hey everybody new here. My name is Tory an of course I have an issue. Not sure if this is even where I'm supposed to ask but here we go.. I have a 175 gallon bow front. I ran fresh water for years an decided to go to salt. Suprisingly my ph, amonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate are all good.. here's my problem I can never keep a constant water level in my sump. I haft to keep checking on it as its either high or low. I have my drain tube coming down to the sump with a ball valve just in case... valve is fully open my return line has a ball valve on it half open. Every time I shut the pump off to feed the water level jumps around an haft to keep a constant eye on it.... I love fish extremely beautiful but I shouldn't be spending all my time watching this if some one can help..... by all means please.

I thought I new a little bit about the hobby until I signed up for this forum, and wow a ton of info along with seasoned RP's on this site. Looking fwd to the build!

Best to all this holiday season!

hello RC my name is anthony and I'm a complete noobie to reefing. i started watching some youtubers and reeding some books and i got my first tank yesterday. i don't know if this is poor manners but i have a question. i just filled my tank with water and a fine layer of sand settled on my rocks. should i do something about it or will it settle by itself?

Just started setting up my IM 20 gallon. I'm looking forward to getting it going. Planning on a slow start to keep everything happy. My exp has been freshwater primarily.

Thank you

Mb.

hey mb, I just started my 20g tank too. just wanted to say good luck and have fun.

Hello everyone, My name is Chris and Im from the Chicago land area. I just pickup a 60 gal tank w/light, mainland 400 liter with a 200w heater. I had a very similar setup about 20 years ago and I felt it was time to restart my hobby.

For my bottom I used crushed shells and a layer of sand. I just finished filling it with water and using water treatment. I added 1/2 cups/ gal of salt. Only thing I notice is that after about a half hour I have a layer of salt on the bottom. I don't remember ever having that problem in the past. Pro needs time to mix and desolve.

Hello, very excited about joining this forum and hoping to get a lot of useful information. I have a 50 gallon column salt water with sump, protein skimmer, and just started a refugium in sump with various algae . Still trying to understand the water chemistry.
1 sail fin tang
I have 2 true percula clownfish
2 ban hi cardinals
2 hermit crabs
1 orchid dotty back
1 green bubble tip anenoma
1 pulsing xenia that doesn't seem to pulse
Just added 1 pretty good sized leather (good deal but have to learn about its care
And 1 goby not sure of its name very small red with yellow side fins adorable!

I have a lot to learn, I know. Thought I'd join here to get some input, advise ect

I am feeding brine shrimp, mysis, ocean nutrition prime reef flakes, and formula 2 flakes

Just added docs Eco matter of copepod sand Rotifera plus some to the main tank and some in the refugium for the new baby goby

Feed reef zoo plankton by sea hem

Was suggested to start phyto 1 and 2 live phytoplankton and live phytoplankton

My flow is moderate, can't remember the stats but have the box if it's necessary

I do 10% water changes bi weekly
Have t5 light fixture with 1 blue bulb and 1 white bulb
Currently testing with API 5 in 1 test strips, also have the salt water test kits with the vials but don't use that much. Sometimes use it to test the calcium .

Not sure what I should be dosing if anything.

Started out with 20 pounds of live rock. Not sure how much I have now.

Just did a water test nitrates are high 40 nitrites 0 ph is changing, unusual 8.0
Kh is 80 gh 180

Any suggestions. I will add a pic

Hello everyone, I'm John. Brand new to the hobby only had 7 gold fish in my life and they all seemed to enjoy their final resting place after a few days. I have a 75g standard and 20L sump not setup yet. Still buying things. I'm here to learn and share my exp's with everyone.

I just got an 80 gallon tank and stand for the best price out there (free for those that don't know me), I want to set up a reef with mostly soft coral but a few Stoney's too. I will limit the fish to a couple of clowns and a goby or two. Will t5 lighting be enough to keep the Stoney alive or do I need better lighting?

Thanks for all the memories ...
No, really! Thank you!

I really enjoy reading through the various posts. It's a great way to learn from the experiences of others. So, while you might have had some frustrations along the way, it really helps the rest of us.

So, why am I looking at a nano reef tank? Well, over the years I enjoyed having various aquarium systems. In fact, my parents had several aquariums when I was a child ... many, many, many moons ago. Then as an adult (perhaps 30 to 25 years ago), I setup and ran a 15g freshwater tank. I enjoyed it so much that about 5 years later I ran a 125g saltwater reef tank.

Unfortunately, my job interfered with the normal maintenance that a reef tank required. We later moved to our newer home and setup a 33g freshwater tank.

So, why get back into a reef tank? Well, the technology has improved (can you say LED??!!). Plus, my wife ... YES! My Wife!! (Can you believe how much I love that gal?!!?) ... bought me a nano reef tank book for this past Christmas! And she wants to put it into our living room area for everyone to enjoy! Swoon!!

Fortunately, I no longer work. I am happily retired. My schedule now allows me the time to spend with the reef system. While reef systems can be tricky, the advances in technology and my time availability will allow far better control of the nano reef.

Additionally, with resources like this forum and various websites it's possible to do a better job of researching various options. While working various projects, I prefer to spend the time to find those options which don't cost as much, but yield excellent results.

This time around, I hope to put together a system that will more than meet my needs ... and will provide the most stable possible setup.

Here's what I'm thinking of at the moment:

Use my current 33g tank (29"x12"x22")
Use a aquarium stand
Use a canister filter for mechanical and biotic filtration
Use a water chiller and http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=11369 to maintain temperature
Use a UV filter to zap the water from the filter
Use a protein skimmer to clean the organics
Use an Ozone generator to the protein skimmer intake
Use a wavemaker kit
Use a LED Lighting Controller
Use a LED Lighting Panel
Use 2 LED UV lights & Reflectors

Plus, of course there are the various test kits and salinity refractometer. It'll cost quite a bit, but I'll pick up the pieces during this upcoming year. A little bit at a time will make it possible without breaking the bank.

Anyway, thanks again for all the wonderful experiences that you folks share.

Hello Im new here starting my first salt Water aquarium i started another thread in the new to hobby section but any ways my name is Paul I'm from Connecticut I'm starting a 10g tank im hoping to have some fish and coral but I'm completely new to this hobby and hoping I can learn some tips and tricks and who knows this may turn to be a awesome hobby but my other thread has my set up so far so check it and have a good night :)

Hi all! My name is Jen. I've always loved saltwater tanks, but never really got into the hobby. 5 months ago I bought a closing pet store that had been known for both it's exotic animals and both fresh and saltwater fish.

While I know a fair amount about freshwater, salt was a mystery to me, and I'm learning but I figured the best way was for me to dive in. I've been maintaining with lots of help, all of the display tanks as well as a 300 gallon reef tank. I'm finding the maintenance almost therapeutic! I brought home a "29 gal" Bio Cube to start my own little journey of discovery and it's currently in the process of being established.

Besides wanting to enjoy the hobby I want to learn so I can properly advise people that come in, as well as carry appropriate product. Luckily I retained a few of the fish knowledgeable employees that were there, but they need days off too so here I am! :-)
