That sounds like the story I heard about SWC. I had a SWC 160 on my old 75 gal. Never did get good skim from it. Probably was too big for my tank.

The point is, it's the pot calling the kettle black. I don't think either of them should go after anyone. They are (all) selling pumps, skimmers, etc. that are just rebadged and repurposed equipment from other industries. I doubt maxspect will get a patent anyway though. When is the last time we saw something truly innovative in the aquarium industry that was designed specifically for this industry?

Yes, seriously. I'm not sure what your background or education is in patent law, but taking a product already used in one industry, and using it for the same or similar purpose in another industry, is not patentable. Shifting industries does not simply eliminate prior art.
Has nothing to do with the quality of the pump. I like my gyre, I just bought my first vortech and LOVE it so I want to streamline things by buying another few.
I bought the gyre in the first place because a jabeo being dead after 9 months. Nice post stalking though. Cool that you have nothing better to do on a saturday night.

You grasping. Of course things have been adapted for use in our hobby.... But....
Find a gyre used in another industry and show me.
For that matter a protein skimmer. (Public aquariums are still with in the range of our hobby)
Personally I've never seen an emperor 400 in a commercial application. But hey , maybe its a cookie factories secret to success ?
Your question was when was the last time an innovative idea was unleashed that was designed specificly for this hobby.
You can redesign anything and get a paten. If Harley can paten a sound its not far fetched that a person could improve on an idea and get a paten on the improvement.

Protein skimming (foam fractionation) existed for decades in water and sewage treatment as well as chemical manufacturing.
The gyre flow has been used in air for sectional cooling in industry for decades also. I personally haven't seen it in water, but that's not a stretch. It's like being the first person to wear shoes in water patenting "water shoes" - amazing invention protects your feet from sharp objects on reefs. Never seen before technology saves you from urchins, stingrays and sharp rocks!!! Completely different from any other protection gear you've ever seen before! Unless you've walked on land at some point... Maybe.

How many skimmers and return pumps are pretty much 100% identical, with just a different color here and there and sold under a different company.
Only reason anyone cares is because "Gyre" is sexy right now.

just installed a maxspect gyre xf150 about a week ago in my 240g 96x24x25 ... before that I had changed powerheads a few times... from multiple vortech mp40es (hated how loud they were but im glad they fixed that issue with the quiet drives) then changed to Hydor Koralia magnum 8's... 2 of those ran my circulation for a few years ... tank is a room divider.. both powerheads on the same end to keep a cleaner look (only a very slight dead spot on the far end)... decided to try the gyre after a lot of debate and I must say.. thus far this thing does far more than anything i've had before... different modes change flow directions, current patterns, undertow, and much more without having to use a ton us wave makers, additional powerheads, insane programming etc... at about 30% it creates ample flow to the far wall.. which means less power consumption, less wear and tear and great performance while extending the life.. next move for me is to add an Apex and icecap for the gyre!

I actually like Reef Builders for the most part, but this "reporting" on the gyre vs. Jebao is pretty ridiculous. In the most recent post, Paletta (who I respect very much in this industry/hobby) is even using a light that is being HEAVILY contested in the IP world between Elegant Corals/Six Elemental and ReefLEDLights. I doubt he even knows, but according to most evidence I have seen presented (ReefLED is a local company to where I recently moved from), the light he chose is the "knockoff/stolen design".
Squirrel Cage water pumps have been used in industrial and laboratory projects for many years as well. There is nothing new here utility-wise. Maxspect MAY be able to get a design patent but those are pretty difficult to defend if any aspect of the competing product was changed.
All of this being said, a lot of what I am/have been posting is just me playing devil's advocate. It really bothers me when people who simply have zero idea what they are talking about pretend to be lawyers or legal scholars. In fact, while I do own two Jebao RW8s, have owned a pair of WP10s (which lasted for two years before I took them offline due to upgrade), and a pair of Jebao/Jecod return pumps, I am slowly gravitating back to Ecotech products now that my reef is back in a condition where the livestock investment is not worth the anecdotal elevated risk of potential failure.
