Seined up 2 coronet fish today at Sunken Meadow with my daughters class trip

Found this little guy clinging to my line while fishing shinnecock inlet this morning.
Can't believe it was able to hang on considering the wind and current.
Hope it settles down for the collecting trip. The wind blowing hard from the north earlier.

It's a wrasse. Possibly a juvenile Halichoeres bivittatus, aka Slippery Dick.

I don't know Bill. Looks like a juvi black sea bass. especially with the blue face stripes.

Agreed, the giveaway is the eye. The sea bass is very different.

George I'm surprised you didn't know that one! Tremendous amount of juvenile Sea Bass all over the island this year.

You might be right :lol:

My first thought was black sea bass, but the second look had me thinking it was looking a bit too long and slender with a wrasse like dorsal fin. Next time George needs to hold those fins

Thanks, guys. My guess was some kind of wrasse from the body shape. Looks nothing like an adult Seabass! Bill, I was wondering if the clamped fins would be troublesome in IDing.

Ok... now what about this little guy? Sardine?

The closest thing to "tropicals" I've pulled up this year are Pinfish, Lagodon rhomboides. And they're not really. Oh, and one Scamp Grouper, that got tossed back. Like you guys have been saying all along, they just aren't here this year.

Two dorsal fins, or just one? It's looking like two to me, which would rule out sardines or any other Clupeids.

That right there is a Mullet. Good to see, Bass candy.

Oops -- again with the finnage! LOL I didn't take one home, but it does look like a dorsal and an adipose fin.

And yes, Dave, looks like a Mullet in the pics I Googled. Thanks.

And... here are the Pinfish. At first I thought they were local Porgys until I read about them in Steve Abrams' article (post #215).

And, no those are not my hands about to be stuck with the "pins!" LOL
