Is the only reason to go with external to have room in your sump?

That and you can direct feed it from your display, thereby getting more organics directly to your skimmer where they can be actively skimmed. Also, you can use the pump strictly as a recirc, no need to use another feed pump.

Plus, they look really good next to the stand.

You can still run it in sump if you want. That is what I will doing. There is now way my wife would allow a skimmer next to my tank
