Mike's 200g

Alk tested at 6.3 tonight so I dosed some manually from dosing pump. Will test again tomorrow and prob dose a little more, will prob trygetup to 7.5-7.7. Its usually been lower (7.3 ish) but my ph sits pretty low and thinking it might come up a bit if I raise alk just a little bit. My ph comes up if I can leave windows open ... But that doesn't go down too well with the wife this time of year.
Calcium didn't really change from the power outage.

Careful, Mike. Now is probably not the time to be playing with alk... Also, it's a dangerous game to try to control ph by bumping alk, especially if you know it is being slightly depressed by closed windows..
Personally, I pretty much never test ph. As long as my alk is steady, ph is going to do what it's going to do...
Just my 2 cents...

Ok yeah I will just get it back up to 7.5 ish and not worry about it. Ph has always been low but I don't think has caused much of an issue.. I'm lucky if it gets over 8 ever.

Excellent news :celeb1: Now find someone to service your genny

Thanks, I am looking at these generators that run on natural gas and will auto start in an outage so you ding even need to be there to fire it up... Could probably handle the whole house... Hmmmmm ...Christmas is just round the corner right?

That is the best option, not only for your reef but for you and your family. A good set up will run you a pretty penny but you can no longer count on the utilities these days, it's all about their bottom line, customers be damned. I've crashed twice because of power outages and after the last outage, 3 days before Christmas, had to spend 5k on a monster Honda genny. Not the perfect solution but I was in a pinch. I keep it fuelled and ready at all times with extra gas on hand. End rant.

One of my LFS has a beutiful juvi emperor angel. I know I have seen some tanks with These guys in, wondered if anyone here has any experience... Is it just a bad idea?

I love seeing my acros with polyp extension to much to ever add an angel like that..
I know people say or isn't necessarily a reflection of coral health but I find that when corals have good pe, they are doing well and good pe usually means growth....
I like having the pe as a barometer of tank health.. Angels generally remove that health indicator by keeping polyps closed up...
My 2 cents.. :)

I'm really not happy with my hanna alk checker. Its been reading around 120 ppm range pretty consistantly so I have been slightly raising my dosing. Last night open a new bottle of reagent and ...when... 147 ppm. I had enough reagent left in the old bottle for 1 more test and again it read around 120 ppm. Tested new bottle... 147 again! With this much difference between different bottles of reagent the thing is useless! So my question is, what test kits for alk are you all using that you trust?

I've heard this story many times.
You have to change the bottle after about 2/3 to make sure you don't get false readings.
This is why I have given up on the Hanna alk checker... Not to mention the unreliability of the phosphate checker...
Stopped using Hanna checkers all together...

Well that sucks. I'm guessing that the new reagent is the more accurate result? With both bottles though the results were pretty repeatable, maybe only a 2ppm difference. One bottle tested 120,122. The other bottle 145, 147. I guess I will see if I can pick up a delivery to check against. I used to use do is but it only measured in .5 increments.

I ran into a similar situation not too long ago. I was advised to give the Hanna reagent a shake every time before use. I am doing so but just to be sure test with Salifert in tandem. Up to this point the results have been within .2 each time (7.2/7.4). I will continue and milk my current bottle of Hanna reagent to the last drop before I pass judgement.

I always shake reagent before use so I wouldn't expect change through the bottle.. Unless it's the reagent breaking down or something when opened.

I'm borrowing my father in law's red sea test kit so I can get a comparison. Of the reagents go bad for the hanna it might find its way in the trash. I just have never liked color changing tests as I find it hard to tell.

Red sea kh pro 7.5 ( I think, test was kinda hard... How pink does constitute the change?). Hanna 7.62. So both really close. My guess is the old reagent went bad. The trick now is to work out how long the hanna reagent provides accurate readings before they are no good.
Is the salifert kit easier to read and see a distinct color change?

With Salifert my eyes see three colour changes. I average and use the second one, close enough :hmm4:

Got some of those Orange filters for my phone and tried doing a video with them. Not sure if posting video is same as picture but am going to try.
