Mike's 200g

Why don't you try feeding more for a few weeks.. You certainly have a cushion- you could easily have higher n and p without problems.. You don't have to worry about a nutrient explosion...

Feed more fish food? Or more coral type foods/ aminos? Do you think I should continue with the color elements? I was thinking about stopping just because it's a new thing I recently started and wondered if it was causing a problem

The old style part of me says just feed more fish food and get more nutrients in the water.. Maybe add a fish or two, as well..
More modern me might say try aminos..
I don't think color elements can make or break a tank like nutrients can.. I have been two weeks (only) without them and corals are fine.. Although, my potassium is low..
I'm leaning towards just feed more for a while.. See what happens..then go from there..
Like so many say, don't don't change too many things at once.. Or you'll never know what happened..

Yeah and like I saymany corals look better than ever. I think I will up feeding and add a little more aminos. Then just carry on as I do with everything else (including color elements) for 2 months and then have a look. Hopefuly the rtn stops and doesn't spread to other, healthy, pieces.

Not sure what's going on. The blue tenuis continued to lose tissue so I have had to cut it up. I took one frag off and the cut the branches that were showing stn off the main bulk of the coral. Was one of my best pieces, it was so blue. Now, to make things worse, I'm noticing stn on a couple other pieces. All tests performed couple days ago have me nothing to be concerned over, and things from what I can see from records have been stable. I am going to stop all color elements as this has been my latest addition... Even though i have been under dosing. The other thing my be the emporer angel? But I would just really expect him to inhibit PE, not cause stn.
Other corals look fine, some better than ever.

Sorry about the tank issues.

I highly doubt its the Angel causing this. It might eat/bite the tips but nothing more. Tissue loss is always to do with water parameters IME.

Can you provide a quick list of your filtration?

Water changes, feeding the fish lots and adding Amino Acids IME helps with coral health recovery. It might brown out the SPS a little, but I'd rather have that than lose corals.

I dosed FM Colour Elements in the past at recommended levels and never had issues. However, Claude did state to me once that overdosing can cause tissue loss. Just double check the dosages.

Also double check all parameters with a different set of kits and check your S.G. as well.

Ok filtration is,
Filter socks (cleaned every other day)
Skimmer - reef octopus elite 200
1.5 cups lignite carbon run passivly (changed monthly)
Live rock/sand
Dr Tim's waste away (beneficial bacteria) weekly after wc about 1/8 dose for tank
Weekly water change - prbably in the area of 10- 15%

I had already re calibrated refractometer and checked, all fine and apex conductivity reading 35ppt.
Last night I did re test everything, and the ones I had multiple kits for used both.
Alk, hanna 7.84, red sea 8.0....both up from previous test
Ca, elos 430, red sea 450... Again both up a little
Mag 1400... No change
No3, 1 (best my eyes can tell) salifert (same as other day)
Po4 0.024 (best my eyes tell) elos high res (same as other day)

The rise in alk and ca may mean growth is slowing... Or it could be that a few days ago I removed a lot of corals to my father in law

Color elements are under dosed. Especially as I use balling lite.... Maybe I should cut back even more...but I mean I have been doing like 5ml of each per week, which, on a 200 is nothing.

some things seem like they are doing well despite the few corals stn'ing.
yesterday (before I cut up the tenuis) one of the staff (Jeff) from Oceans by Design (LFS) stopped by to pick up the par meter they lent me. he brought his camera and took a few shots.

he started with fish pics. photo bucket wont let me resize for some reason?? so I will first just try one to see
female rhomboid wrasse

top down corals

in this pic you can kinda see a bit on the blue tenuis that was loosing tissue, doesn't look as bad in this pic, more was on the back side. this is before I tok the cutters to it.

Previous pictures jeff took all with "daylight" lights on. Then Jeff wanted to take some with the blues and UV channel only. bring on the glow!!!

my setosa under blue, UV has an awesome yellow marble to it

that's all he sent me.

Looking great! Nothing seem out of place in terms on your filtration or parameters other than perhaps the GAC and Dr Tims bacteria. Perhaps stop both and introduce them later? Its well known that certain GAC is highly efficient and can cause STN etc. I dont think that is the case here but maybe worth taking it out for a few weeks. Dr Tims stuff...who knows...maybe worth stop dosing it for a while.

Hm... Wow, Mike.
Your tank looks really fantastic in general.. Like I mean really, really good..
I'm baffled by the stn issues. I really don't think you have an 'issue' in there..
Corals don't even look underfed..
there is such thing as a coral that just doesn't do well..
I have them (well.. I don't have them for long) generally, if I see that the vast majority of corals are thriving, the ones that don't, I treat them like you do.. Frag and watch.. Sometimes they come back and sometimes not, but I don't worry about it too much..
Matt (mhucasey) has a theory about bacterial infestation causing stn on some corals..
I have to say that I have turned the odd coral around by fragging away stn and glueing..
Maybe this is your issue.. And if so, there isn't much you can do to your regular maintenance routine to make it better...
