My humble SPS journey - Shallow 80g

Hi Josh may I know what camera you are using? White balance done in camera or through PS?

Thanks!

Josh,

I am going to frag my Lokani this weekend, if I can get up the nerve, and after it encrusts (a few weeks?) give it to someone who can grow it out and share. We are going to have to plan to meet somewhere in between if you can keep a space open. :)

Sounds like a really good idea Mark, PM me when you wanna set something up. I'll do my best with it, hopefully it does as well for me as it has been for you. :)

Hey Riz,

I own a Nikon D50 and usually just use the stock 18-55 lens as I don't really have any fancy lenses yet. I do post-processing in a program called UFRaw and basically all I do is adjust brightness as my RBG values are saved. I've been itching to upgrade as the D50 is a pretty old model, and then get a macro lens; but money has been tight so it really hasn't been feasible. :p

Try playing with macro filters instead of the lens. You get a bit of pincushion effect and you have to focus manual, but they're really cheap and fun to play with.

I'll look into it, thanks. :)

Nice! I'd love to see it.

Oops meant to respond but I didn't. I'll try tomorrow, didn't get a chance to do it today. It's been having a bad day today anyways so not much to see, but hopefully it'll start responding to the meds and I can get it in the DT.

Hi josh your tank is amazing I have the same light on my 90 mixed reef and to mp 40 pump what mode do u have your pump on thanks Dan

Thanks!

With the new aquascape I don't have flow setup 100% how I want it so nothing is concrete at the moment.

I raise my light fixture and bend over the tank on a chair to take photos, my big head usually helps block the T5s but there's some photos where you can see them still. :D

I bought the mag on Thursday and it deflated for the first time on Sunday which is when I started my course of 400mg Sulfamethoxazole/80mg Trimethoprim every night after lights out. I will continue to administer this until Friday and if the deflation doesn't stop I'll probably switch to 250mg of Ciprofloxacin.

Here's a photo of it in my hospital tank

First of all I'm going to start by saying that I nearly solely blame you for my completely wrasse only tank :debi: I just bought another one so I now have a list of four wrasse and nothing else :lmao: At least I have something non-wrasse on the way haha I have the opportunity to buy a pair of cirrhilabrus hygroxerus (Monsoon Wrasse)!! But they're a little out of my price range lol

:eek::eek:
OH. MY. God. That is absolutely gorgeous!

Hi Josh,
Tank is looking great. Congratulations. Question for you - what is your lighting schedule now and how far above the water line if you light fixture and are you running all 8 bulbs the full schedule?

Thanks!

I will take that, that's fair. I'll definitely be waiting in suspense to see what your new additions are, pretty excited for you. :D I bet those monsoon fairies will be somewhat affordable in Aus in a couple of years, guess we'll see. :p

Thanks, I just hope it makes it out of treatment. Been through this process a few times before and the stress of treating them doesn't go away.

Thanks Patrick, appreciate it. :) I run all 8 bulbs for 8 hours a day 8" above the water line at the moment.

SO what is your maintenance schedule and what products do you use/ what do your water parameters look like.

10% weekly water changes
BRS 2 part
KZ Sponge Power (4 drops daily) -- recently added
Acropower (14ml weekly) -- recently added

Salinity - 35ppt
Alkalinity - 8 dkh
Calcium - 420ppm
Magnesium - 1350ppm
Nitrate - 0ppm
Phosphate - 0ppm

Nutrients aren't accurate, I do have some cyano growth (which is going away) so I can't say for sure. My ultimate goal is to keep no3 around 5ppm and phosphate 0.03ppm, but I say that like it's easy to do. :D

I have seen my new addition lots in the last few days as he's in the store still till the sump is settled :) It's very highly potential that I'll have the only one in Aus too! :)
Monsoon's are coming on Thursday so I'm making a special trip just to go and see them :inlove: I'll take some pics for you Josh :beachbum:

I'm trying to source a nice healthy Heteractis magnifica for the top of the right rock structure, I thought I could have a reef without one but I really miss my brother's old mags and with my tank slowly coming into maturation I feel like the time has come. It may take a little while to find the right one, but I'm really excited to have a spot ready when I do find one.

That's about it for now, thanks for reading. :)

Be careful with those VorTech. They come apart at times. When they do, dropping to the floor may result in an expensive broken dry side. Happened to me. You really need to secure the dry side so that if the wet and dry side come apart, it wont drop to the floor.

God luck with your Magnifica. Beautiful anemone.

Only one in Aus? You're kidding me right? :p Sounds very expensive, I'm excited to see what it is.

Thanks Minh, appreciate the advice a lot. Hopefully I can get it healthy and into the system, things seem to be doing pretty good right now.

very nice build!

Thank you. :)

Hey Josh, when does the anemone go in?

I admittedly messed up on treatment when I was dosing septra and was doing only a half dose, I had helped treat mags and gigs with my brother but this is the first time I did it myself and went into it thinking I knew what I was doing and only skimmed the treatment thread; doing so I read the dosage amount incorrectly which has made this a harder experience than it should've been. It really should've been in my DT today, I caught the infection super early and it was still really healthy, but I messed up. I've probably done 120g in water changes during this, for instance I woke up today and did 12g and I'm working on another 10g water change for tonight. Most of these water changes I'm pulling from the DT and topping it off, using the DT water for the HT, but I can only do 15g a day from the DT as I bought RC to save money on salt as I knew I'd go through a lot in a short amount of time; this is to keep my alkalinity where I want it (8 dkh).

All of that being said I'm very optimistic I should definitely have it in the DT by Saturday, but maybe even as early as Wednesday as long as it continues to respond the way it has been. Rule of thumb is to treat for a minimum of 7 days, at least 3 days after its last deflation; so if it deflates for the last time on the fourth day you can generally pull it the seventh. Overall it's still been pretty healthy, just expelling a bunch of crap and dirtying up my HT more than I remember being an issue. It's been over a year since I've worked with anemones and it's been a pretty humbling experience.

Awesome to hear the nem is nearly ready to go into the tank!! Looking forward to seeing it in place :D

Dave said he's never seen one on the lists before and I've certainly never heard of anyone else owning one lol but that's not why I'm getting it, gives me a good amount of wank value though :lmao: let's not even go into price lol its double the cost of my previously most expensive fish! :eek1:

It's a fairly available wrasse to you guys though lol, still expensive and uncommon but they're certainly obtainable :) he's going to be my pride and joy though :D
