My reef tank - a video introspective

my 9yr old daughter heard the octopus song and was drawn to the video! well done man!

Thanks everyone! I'm glad you guys enjoyed it.

Wayne can you share some of the details about the tank....dimensions, equipment, feeding, dosing etc. Basically the keys to your success!

Hey Steve,

Yeah, I have to do a write up. I don't do anything fancy. I run 3x400W 20k MH with T5 supplements. I only run the T5's for 20 mins in the morning and night just to simulate dusk and dawn. I skim heavily with a BK250. I have lots of flow with Tunze 2x6155 and 2x6205. I use both a Ca and Kalk reactor, but they can't keep up with my tanks needs so I dose too. I prefer this method because it's good redundancy and I can tweak exactly what my tank needs with dosing. I feed my fish heavily so they'll poop a lot, thus feeding my acros. That's about it.

Wow, I wish I could track down some of that Darth Maul Porites and get it to grow like you did Wayne.

Yeah, it does really well for me. I just keep it lower out of direct flow.

any tips on goni/flowerpot coral care? Your pink colony appears to be really thriving!

Yeah, it's crazy. I remember back in the day it was impossible to keep any kind of goni's over long period of time. Then I picked up a small frag at our local coral show. It was sold to me as a ORA Gonipora so I thought I'd give it a try. Anyway, 2 years later and it's grown a lot. Like all LPS, I keep it lower and out of direct flow and it seems to like it a lot.

looking great like always wayne.

still waiting for you to make some frags one day so I can stock my tank up again

Great video Wayne!
Really cool how you phased out each coral with a still shot...
Your corals health, color, growth, and selection are amazing...
Nicely Done!

Thank you for sharing the equipment list with us Wayne and I have one more question. What levels do you maintain in your tank for alk, ca, mg, po4 and no3?

Ok Steve, I'm going to admit something. The only things I actively test for is Ca, Alk and Mg. it's a battle for me to keep Ca above 420, I struggle to keep Alk between 8-9 and Mg I try to keep above 1200.

As for po4, I run gfo through a reactor. I change it out about every 3 weeks or if I see red slime start growing on my sand. I handle No3 reduction just through water changes which I do about 15% every week. I tried bio pellets way back when I first got back in and didn't like it. I found that it was too hard to controll all the variables. I also run activated carbon through a reactor. Oh, and I dose Loguls solution once a week with my water changes.

That's about it. I try to keep things as simple as possible.

Wayne I really appreciate you sharing this info with us. As I was reading this post I was saying to myself...keeping it simple.

No problem Steve. One more thing I will add is that I'm a huge believer in biological filtration. It may be because I'm more old school than new, but I have a 4" sand bed and lots of live rock, along with a refugium. Not only does it make your tank look more natural but all that sand and rock buffers your water really well too.
