new puddle pictures

Hi Jon. Most of the fish swim in and out of the matrix of swimways through and behind the rock or just hang out there in the shade. They all come out at feeding time . There are around 35 of them. Quarantine and tank transfer protects them form disease when I add one or two new ones.

I'm always impressed with the variety and health of the animals in your system, Tom. Truly a result of your passion, knowledge, and desire to learn as much as you can in this hobby!

Keep up the great work!

You are the mad scientist of the reef :) insane setup I bow to your meticulous congregation of corals and beauty... As they say, bigger is better and at 700 gallons that's mighty big!! Id love to come check in out in person one of these days, as I'm sure the pictures are merely a shadow of the actual awesomeness :)

Did I spy one of the largest setosa's I've ever seen? (I rarely see it in colony form, usually just small frags)

Looking good Tom!

Saweeeeeeeeeeet systems Tom! Amazing growth. You must go through saltwater and dosing chemicals like my daughter goes through diapers!

Yes it's a setosa,grown from a nickel/quarter sized frag over about 1.5 years.
I have a few frags from it too. Took it months to get going.

You must go through saltwater and dosing chemicals like my daughter goes through diapers!

About 200 gallons of salt water pr month.

I only dose limewater(calcium chloride) for calcium and alkalinity and a dab of baking soda once and a while. I get the calcium chloride from Bulk Reef Supply in the 5 gallon size and at about 15 tsps per day consumption it lasts a very long time.

A 1.75 liter bottle of cheap vodka($13) lasts about 9 weeks. A gallon of vinegar about 2 mos. I use these as an organic carbon source. This helps control PO4 and NO3 cutting down on gfo use

4 cups of rox granulated activated carbon per month.

About 500grams of gfo changed once per month,I regenrate this and use it 10x and buy the 7lb size HC from brs to keep the costs down.

I've dosed iodine and potassium in the past but saw no dicernible difference in the corals so I haven't for months. Tried the new Red Sea test for Iodine( I'm low) and Potassium( I'm a bit high) . Not a bad test kit.m May dose some iodide in the future.

That it for the chemicals/supplements.. Food and salt go a long way . A little vodka and vinegar do too.

Looks awesome. Anyone would love to have just one of those three tanks.

Next time I'm in Blasedell visiting my Dad, I'll try and coordinate to see this in person. If that's ok with you. I grew up in Cheektowaga so have to go through West Seneca to get between the two.

That would be fine with me. Just pm me next time you're in NY.

All 3 tanks look amazing tmz.My main interest has been mixed reefs for the most part but, I got to admit its awesome to see mature sps colonies like you have growing together.
Thanks for all the advice and good luck with everything.

Tom,
Your tanks look amazing - nice job! I am curious about your quarantine method for new fish. What do you typically do with a new fish before adding it to your system?

Thanks,
Dave

I set up the quarantine tank with sg to match or be lower than the bag water. After temp acclimation( floating the closed bag for 20 minutes), the bag is opened and the fishis immediately put in the qt.Basically I acclimate the tank to the fish rather than risking a long stay in bag water where ammonia toxicity can increase once the bag is opened particularly if fish have been confined to it overnight or longer as is usually the case with shipped fish. For fish acquired locally, I set the sg a couple of points lower than the store. For shipped fish I set the sg low around 1.017 in the qt since most shippers use low sg water for shipping and I can't rally know what the sg is without opening the bag. Drops in sg that don't go below their internal sg (1.008) don't stress the fish; rapid rises do.Some folks try to adjust the ph to match too ;I don't worry with it as long as my qt is in normal range 7.8 to 8.3 or so. The q tank is equipped with a sponge filter ,an airstone, a small hang on th back filter runing carbon , a heater and some pvc for resting places. In a three day time span ammonia buildup is rarely an issue but I use some ammo lock, ammonia detoxifier just in case.
I perform tank transfer 4x ,3 days a part for prophylacitc treatment of cryptocaryon irritans(ich). That is ; I move the fish every 3 days to a new tank for a total of 4 transfers. Along the way I gradually (.001 pr day) adjust sg upward as necessary to match the display tank water.I usually use 2 tanks(ten or 29 gallons depending on the size and number of fish) and dry them and associated equipment thoroughly before reuse. Ich will survive in wetness.
During this period, I observe the fish closely for signs of brooklynella, velvet( amyloodinium, flukes and any bacterial infection, etc. and initiate treatment when needed.

Thanks for asking.

Glad you like it.

I use: 250watt single ended Hamiliton 14k halides plus vho actinics on the sps dominant tanks.; 175 watt single ended Hanilton 20k halides plus vho actinic supplementation on the lps tank.

Tom, you have a VERY IMPRESSIVE SETUP.

My first go at corals did not go well. Lots of learning. Right now I have mostly fish in my tank but would like to try corals again. I see you know RandyO. He set my system up about 6 years ago. I live about 5 minutes from A Reef Creation. My Nitrates are at 40ppm. All other parameters are fine. I am doing massive water changes and replacing my sand bed. I would like to try the Vodka/Vinegar but I am afraid that I could harm my fish. I am not a chemist so I do not understand the risk or if it is a risk using vodka and vinegar.
