I mentioned this before, but in light of the news on reeftanksupply, wanted to mention it again...Ameka Aquatics is selling the Octopus RPS skimmers at RTS prices (in stock and quick shipping/processing too).

my buddy ordered the 2000 from Ameka and got it in 2 days (shipped in same state). Same good experience for me when I got the 3000 (just haven't had a chance to set it up yet).

Thanks 55, I was trying to remember what that place was called a few posts ago.

So, to Reiterate, you CAN NO LONGER ORDER FROM REEFTANKSUPPLY.COM.

Ameka doesnt have the non recirc ones...although CA does, and their prices on those arent that bad... like $240 instead of $220 on the PC3000.

Yeah, the non-recirc do look interesting and maybe worth a shot. Let us know how it works out if you end up going that route.

My 60 system just failed (slow leak in the tank), so besides not being able to set up my new larger system (and the 3000), I have to figure out how to replace my 60. Will probably use a RPS 1000 and just get a 50-60G like jayreefer has set up.

FYI, on the actual product page at Ameka, the price is listed as a discount from "Regular Price". Not sure how temporary those prices may be...

"Simple to use! Plug it in and set the water level using the telescoping riser tube "

Isn't that like what they say on the Euro-Reef site? And it has that union connection to the collection cup as well, and the 110 is $99.

JP,
It seems that when it comes to protein skimmers...bigger is better (at least to a certain extent). I hope I can use it outside my sump because I'll never be able to get it inside the sump. The pump alone is pretty large. Based on the size of it, I have no doubt that it is big enough for my tank.

The guy who owns the store is actually a member here and he tells me that they will soon have the recirc mods for these just like the ASM skimmers that he also represents.

Mine came quickly. It was shipped in the Reef Ocotopus box only with no outer box. It was lined with a layer of styrofoam but could have definitely used an outer box. My box has a couple of punctures. An extra box will obviously increase the price but may prevent some damage.

I got the RPS-3000 and installed it 3 days ago. It is being fed from the overflow via a gate valve. I modded the gasket too so the hole on the venturi is not covered by the rubber. I installed the muffler that came with the unit. With the RC pump on, the bubbles are breaking about half way up the riser without any skimmate forming on the "head". However, the bubble column keeps collapsing, not allowing the protein-laden foam to collect on top of the "head". Can anyone advise as to why this is happening or what I may be doing wrong? Thanks!

Dave

Thank you Mr. Weasel - I agree with you on going big when possible. I have more room in my sump than outside it in my stand so I think the 110 will work out well. The plug and play aspect is the most important to me, I will be interested in hearing how your setup goes.

thanks!

Ahh...plug-n-play. Yes, I'd say it's close to that. Basically, you have to screw on the neck and attach the pump. You have to remove the front cover off the pump and screw on the air inlet and attach it to the skimmer body. That's all there is to it for the 150. That all took under 3-minutes. I'll post more in a few days after I have it running a while.

My Octopus 150. This should give you an idea about the size of the 150 Thats a 55g tank in the background. It also dwarfs the Eiffel Tower;)

Break in time. All skimmers have a break in period. Give it some time.

commiphora, The RPS-3000 has a lot of acrylic surface to break in. The manufacturer also leaves a fair amount of oil on the surface. I have two...one started a foam head after a couple days, the other took about a week. Your skimmer will probably take about 2 weeks to really come up to speed.

For anyone intersted, I just hooded up my RPS-3000 with a Dolphin 5 Star air pump. I can now control the air anywhere from 3 LPM to just under 10 LPM. The interesting thing is that the more air I feed, the more "empty" area at the bottom of the skimmer.

With just the venturi (~6 LPM, bounces around a lot), I got some bubbles all the way down to the pump intake. With the air at ~8 LPM, the air stops just short of the injection location. I guess that the pump is pulling less water (more air) now, so fewer bubbles are getting dragged down.

Anyway, I found that the pump is quietest at about 7--8 LPM of air. Less air and I get the bubble-chopping noise in the pump. More air and I think the pump starts to cavitate a little (kind of a rattling sound).

I'll let it settle for a while and then see if there is a difference in skimming ability.

I wanted to give some more info about the RPS-1000. I have one on my 50gal sps. I only have one small tang in the tank and only 5 corals (mostly Zoo's) because I am still adding to the tank. Even with the low bioload I am getting about 1/4 cup of very dark skimmate every day. It is still skimming very dry.

The quality of these skimmers is great. I am gettting way better foam and skimmate out of the 1000 compared to my CSS 220. I will now be getting a larger model to replace my CSS 220. For the price you will not find a better skimmer.
