New Tank - Multiple Tangs 260 Gallons

Hey everyone I am setting up a new 260 Gallon Tank (84x24x30) in the next month and am putting together my list of fish. I want to have several different tangs. I am worried about aggression among all of them. Please let me know if anyone has any experience with this many tangs all together. I am worried that the Sohol or Achilles might create a problem. I have included my full list below:

Blonde Male Naso
Achilles
Sohol
Chevron
Purple
Powder Blue
Hippo
Mustard
Yellow
Kole yellow eye

IMO, that is too many tangs for a 260g... Besides sohol and Achilles, powder blue will also get aggressive

i would not go with the sohal, achilles, or the PBT. a naso will probably do fine as long as you add it last because they do get big and could be aggressive towards other tangs

I've got a Naso, Chevron and Powder Blue.
They were starting to get on each others nerves in a 125 'QT'. But are doing fine in a 350.
But I feel like I am 'tanged out' at this point.
I would scale back you list.

+ 1

You may want to pick a specimen from each family ; one ctenocheatus, one zebrasoma and one acanthurus /paracanthurus / or naso.

I had a powder blue first and then added a Achilles. The pbt was relentless and harassed the Achilles until it died.

I have the same size tank and keep an Achilles, Chevron, Hippo, Desjardini Sailfin, Purple and a Yellow. I'd judge my tank to be 'tang saturated' at this point. For various reasons I'm unable to keep a Naso, but I'd judge even a 265 to be too small. Sohal is a hyper aggressive fish and on my no-keep list.

What has been your issue with the Naso? After all the input I think I'm leaning towards a Naso, Achilles, Chevron, and Purple Tang.

Naso tangs came be a challenge to get eating. To me they are easily stressed and which causes them to not eat. I was told not to get them too big or too small, so they have better chance to adapt to captivity. I don't know how true that is. If you go with them 4, I would put the Naso in first and let him get established, then the Chevron, then the Achilles and PT at the same time.

Lots die for no reason at all after eating for weeks, sometimes months. Probably has something to do with collection methods. Others never eat

Got it. Has anyone had any luck with quoyi parrotfish? Thinking of adding one to my system.

Yes, there is a thread on them if you search. They are pretty massive fish, just as an FYI. I don't know what their max length is, but parrotfish, at least in the wild, are thick.

If i'm not mistaken the quoyi usually don't get more than 8 or 9 inches. I'll make sure and check before I put one in the tank. I've seen some Scarus rubroviolaceus in Hawaii over 24 inches.

260 is a pretty big tank, but that is a lot of tangs. Much smarter people than me have chimed in, but I would not get all those. Achilles have a very poor track record. Powder blues and sohols are jerks (take that Reef Central logo!)

I'd get the following: Chevron, Purple, Hippo, Naso, and Yellow. A yellow and purple added together in that size tank would likely be fine.

That's a lot of tangs, but again, that's a big freaking tank!

Good luck!

My LFS (been doing it 30 years) won't even sell Achilles. He says he sees them all the time at the wholesalers in LA but he won't stock them, even if someone requests one. He says that maybe 1 in 20 survives. Live Aquaria rates them Expert Only.

Don't get one. It will die.

I got the following in my 300g with no issues. Most introduced at the same time.

Blonde Naso
RedSea Sailfin
Purple Tang
Hippo Tang
Yellow Tang
Powder Blue Tang
Kole Tang
Lieutenant Tang
