Onyx Pair Laid Eggs

They finally laid eggs for the first time yesterday. Now to trying and raise the larvae...

The female has been alone for a long time since her first partner passed away about seven months ago. I added three smaller Onyx clowns for her to pick a mate a month ago and yesterday she laid eggs with her new man :eek1:

Nice looking pair, been wanting to know the difference between onyx and true percs.

Onyx are A. percula (true percs), just a color variant. The common acceptance is black filled in between all three bars, but purists want a black dorsal as well.

Get your rotifers going as soon as possible. Good place to buy them is SeaHorseSource.com in Florida. I've had excellent results from their rotifers. Congrats!

Thanks Barbara. I ordered from Brineshrimpdirect.com and am hoping they come in in time. I may be too late on this batch. Has anyone had any luck with DT zooplankton/phytoplankton for short periods of time in the early stages? I am thinking I may try a bottle of that if the rotifers are not in in time.

I think this is the last day before they hatch...

LOL...Eklikewhoa...As of now, I am just hoping to keep a few of these guys alive. It would be fun to raise fry.

Down the road, if they get healthy and grow, I would be more than happy to find them good homes. :)

Here's one of my favorite shots of the female. I am still hoping her dorsal will fill in completely with the black.

The female is a wild caught that I purchased as a pair. Her mate died about 7 months ago and I order (about 6 mo. ago) three guys from Rod's. She picked one as her mate and the other two I had to sell off as they were beating them up once they paired.

UPDATE: Her initial clutch was about 200 eggs. Last night she had only about half that left--due to the male doing a poor job of guarding the eggs from the other fish.

Late last night they hatched but I have not yet received the rotifer cultures I ordered and this weekend I would have been out of town.

So, we will have to try and raise the next batch...keep you all informed.

The short answer is, no, dead food will not work. You need live rotifers. Also, there is probably not enough time to get enough rotifers going to support this batch. Better to let it go, and focus on getting ready for the next batch in two weeks.

Good Luck!

P.S. lots to read here in the fish breeding forum
