Our 1000 gal in Canada

WOW. this looks like its going to be a great setup. when did get that achilles tang? how's his temper? any problems with him?

Great start to the build. You mention earlier of a plan to minimize humidity and emergency drainage system. I would like to hear about it.

As a fellow Canadian and someone considering upgrading to a larger tank, I would like to see an update on this. The tank's height has me interested....

Thank you and the candidates are:

Royal exclusiv Bubble King 650

Reef flo Orca (2 of them)

Deltec

EuroReef offer a custom

Personally I've been looking for a "Volcano" but so far no answer....

Volcanos are no more- unless you find a used one. I sold mine and could hook you up with the person that bought it but I think he is setting up a large holding system with it.

How are you going to handle humidity? If you have a closed room you will either need an air exchange system or a bank of bathroom fans.

Nice setup, can you give more information about your refugium and algae turf?? Picture too thank you

Herer We are back

Herer We are back

I know its been some time but I'm ready to retake this thread wit more pics and ready to answer your questions.

By the end of 2009 I was embarked in this beautiful project which bring me definitely in to the club of the 1000 gal ( Magic number)

A few other fellow aquarist are there as well I am now

I'll send as many pics as I can.

Regards,

Frank A.

And I thought I was in the big boys club with my 300 gallon. We need a 1000 gallon plus header on the forum board.

Lookin good Frank!!!

Thank you all!

Thank you all!

Well I will try to bring this up to date.

Between work, travel and my little daughter sometimes is hard to find room to write but I'm back:

In October of 2009 I started this project and so far here we go again.

The floor was reinforced since the tank is located in a studio library if you like.

Since the house was under construction all these things were done with no problem.

Planning , Planning and more planning

Planning , Planning and more planning

When it comes to a development of this nature planning is everything and still once you are done you start to think "why I didn't do this or that" no worries that will always happen.

One thing that worries me all the time is to experience a Tank leak and they come in many ways, defects in the manufacturing, a mishap while handling something, a piece of rock, you name it so it is crucial to have a plan on how to deal in the event this monster decides to let go. If you don't believe me just do this experiment, put a five gallon pail of water in your floor and tell me how it looks. So we developed an emergency drain just in case.

The tank was housed in this kind of shower tiled room with an air extractor to alleviate the excess of humidity and to prevent any mold or leakage to the house. The emergency drain is 3" to be able to take the water away in case of a leak.

Specs Electrical and fishroom

Specs Electrical and fishroom

When it comes to electrical I always play as safe as possible none of my boxes are ever close to the floor and all contacts have to be GFI.

In the fish room originally I wanted two sumps with 500 gal each but they didn't fit. So I had to reduce my options to 3/ 150 gal ea still I think I have enough water to work with.

The first sump houses the skimmer that was built by My reef creations and handles 5000 gal at full throttle, I love this skimmer which uses a pump driving 5800 gal/hr

The second sump will house the swamp /mangrove forest

The third sump is for reactors and UV sterilizer

I have an R/O water machine that makes 100 gal per day super efficient

Bad ***!! Do you have floor plans of plumbing you can post up?? Very interested. Best of everything to you & your build.

The tank measures 10 feet long by 36" wide and 56" tall

Great progress on the tank! A few questions concerning the glass and tank:

1 - the tank is 56" tall - what is the thickness of the glass?
2 - I might have missed it, but is the front pane starphire?
3 - also, how was the bottom panel made? - double pane or tempered or extra thick?
4 - can you show us a picture of the bracing used ontop of the tank?

No worries I'll share the secret actually I have some pictures of the glass since the tank had to be build on site.

Please stay tunned

5 - can you post the pictures of the glass and share the secret?

The tank is made in glass by my friend Derek Smith of Miracles Aquariums which is a sponsor on this forum.

6 - also, any reason why you went with glass instead of acrylic for a tank with that height (as Miracles builds both)?

Thanks
