Peeping Banggai Fry

Hey shandy say!
Just a little update on the babies.
Last week Wednesday when I was cleaning the nurseries, one of the babies swam over to the CO2 tubing I use to clean the bottom on their tank, and got sucked up in the tube and into the lucky bucket. I quickly scooped him out of the lucky bucket and placed him back in the 10g in a smaller nursery by himself, but he didn't make it. He wasn't damaged by the tubing, I think it was SFS :(

I had to have surgery on my left foot last Thursday and I am not able to do ANYTHING with our tanks for the next month! EVERYTHING is on Ed now. I really do feel sorry for him. He became very good at taking notes on the baby tank and seahorse tank, he knows enough about the BIG tank already, so that part is easy for him.

I made up enough DIY food for the babies for a month to make it easy for him, BUT he thinks it is so cool seeing the babies chase after live food and eat it. SO needless to say, the babies are back on live food until I can get into the fish room again and work with them :thumbdown

So we had to stop working on the (2) 40g breeder tank for now.

Last night Ed released the babies into the 10g tank we had the nurseries floating in. He said he noticed the big ones not letting the little ones eat and we lost another baby :( This morning he said everyone is fine and eating like normal. Of course he fed them live food!

He placed the daddy back in the big tank and all is well, the 2 females are glad to see him back :inlove:

Maybe today I will see them "dancing" and have more babies

Hey sandy! Sorry to hear about your surgery. Hope everything went well.

Sorry to hear about the fries that died. Most probably the 1st one died of SFS. So it is really important that you be careful when cleaning your tank.

As for the 2nd fry that died, aggression does become an issue after the 2nd week in my experience. So i suggest you divide them into smaller groups or move them from your 10gal grow out tank to a bigger tank especially since you have a lot of fry.

Don't worry about the fry being back on live food again. It shouldn't be an issue so much because they have already tasted prepared foods and have started accepting that anyway so when you feed them that again, they will remember and eat it also. The main problem with training banggai fry to eat prepared food is getting them to eat it for the 1st time. Once they've eaten that, it shouldn't be an issue anymore.

I do hope to see more fry from your pairs. I myself have not seen my pair breed again. Im not sure why but ever since it started raining here in P.I. they stopped breeding. I wonder if they are "summer breeders." Guess i have to do research on that. hehe!

Good luck sandy! I hope you feel better soon. To ed, mix some prepared food in there! hehe! Keep it up! :)

Thank you, today I am able to walk short distances without my crutches, so you know the first place I went to was the fish room

Great advise, on the feeding as well.....thanks....
Ed is doing such a great job with everything, its hard for me to tell him we went backwards on the feeding.... and I didn't.... I just said, Hey, have you added any of my DIY food???? :wavehand:

I found this article to be very helpful..

what ratio of male to female do you have? Some species have many males, and one female; do banggai cardnal fish do that, or like to pair up pair?

Bangaiis are pairs, but there are a few people who set up tanks with multiple males and a single female, with each male sectioned off but one. While he's holding eggs, they cycle in the next male and so on. Females are ready about every two weeks, males at most once a month.

Wow thats good! Keep it up! I hope my pair breed again soon. Still don't know why they stopped breeding. I think i have to get rid of my PT soon.

Just a little update, yesterday I was able to stand in front of the tank for a little while and "stare" :D everything is dong "ok" for not doing a water change out or testing the water for "anything"... in 3 weeks!

We placed the male BC back in the main tank on the 27th of last month and yesterday I noticed he was holding a mouth full of eggs! so I am assuming they danced within a day or so of being back together, so I'm guessing we will another batch of fry around the 19th of this month???
Also our LFS called me and said their male has been holding, and should be ready on or around the 8th of this month, they asked me if I would be interested in raising the fry, well I guess you know what my answer is
I am getting a little cabin fever, so Ed promised me he would take to the LFS,
I am so looking forward to going! I know this sounds CRAZY right...
But maybe while we are there, we will be able to catch their male BC, and bring home some new fry... I helped Ed set up the BBS hatching station last night... He has been AWESOME through this whole process, I think I will keep him! :love1::love1::love1:

This is a great thread! I'm hoping I'll be able to contribute to it soon. It's only the first spawn of my current pair, but my male has been holding for 13 days now so I have high hopes that he is going to make it all the way. If all goes well, one week from now I'll have some babies!

let me know if you get them up to size

Just a little update, our male is still holding eggs
we have been making BBS for a few days now and we are going to try and catch the male tonight..... wish us luck!

The babies are doing very well, I can not believe how big they are getting......
I have been able to switch them back to frozen mysis........But Ed still like to feed them live :wavehand:

How are your babies doing????
Did your pair "dance" again????

Hi edandsandy! Glad to hear you banggai pairs keep on breeding. Mine still haven't done the dance again. Im still not sure why but maybe they are taking a break for the meantime. They are still both fat and healthy as of today yet they are unable or unwilling to breed for me for now. Oh well....Maybe my PT is stressing them out. I might have to get rid of my PT soon.

Congrats again!

I very much enjoyed reading this thread. This makes me want a pair of banggais! Tagging along for the ride!

I just got a pair of bangai cardinals and this thread has givin me a lot of encourgement on being able to keep the babies if they decide to breed.
thanks

Thanks shady say,
BTW, Did you get a chance to read the link I sent you? What your pair is doing is normal.... your pair is doing what nature is telling them to do :love2:

We were unsuccessful in catching the male last night.... we didn't want to stress the male out.... so maybe tonight will be a better night for us
