as soon as my percs lay my rot culture crashes. go figure.

i'm getting some phyto cultures started before i try rotifers again, was using algamac plus.

however in the mean time i saw a post that reported success up to day 5 or 6 on just frozen rotifers and bbs. the theory was that the bbs made the frozen rotifers seem more lively.

i am also going to be going to the beach daily (hopefully) to get live zooplankton. i have a very small bacth this time so hopefully it will work.

will post results.

Rotifers are pretty much what they are enriched with and I know of no frozen rotifer that has been enriched prior to being frozen.
 
I'm not saying that it's impossible to get them to feed on frozen rotifers but four to five days is about the same time frame that larvae will live with NO food at all.

will do the eggs are less brown than yesterday and it is day five so i think they will hatch by day 7! seing as i dont have one of chad vossens larval snaggers, i guess i will be doing the flashlight technique.:rolleyes:

I am getting some sponge filters in tommorow, their the 50 gallon hydor model

and i went to get live zooplankton again today, and within ten minutes i had enough copepods to feed a whale shark! (minor exageration) though their were way more than last time. maybe its because it wasn't raining this time.

btw, i had an idea.

I could filter out the zooplankton from the water and then add it to my larval tank water (50/50 tank and ASW) or i could filter half, then add back the live zooplankton with 50% tank water. then tommorow 50% water change with zooplankton filled seawater, so on so forth. i know that this is kind of cheating but...what do you think?

i guess i might split this batch up and do some with only rots and bbs to test the original theory.

well, it is now 1: 30 am they should be hatching...day 8 or nine ! i wonder why their not hatching...maybe its because my temp isat 74 degrees!

i guess one of my heaters stopped working..dont know how long its been this way...

though the eggs still look like kathy's on day 7 here http://www.marinebreeder.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=169&t=1338 and yesterday they looked like day 6.

I will stay up a little longer.

do you think i should raise the temp in the reef tank? it might have been like this for weeks...everything seems ok.

also, do you think it will be fine for me to raise the larval tank temp up to 80 overnight? i just unplugged the heater to let it equalise.

probly wont get a response this late...yawn, i should be sleeping to.

oh and i decided that because the larvae should eat 1,000 rots a day and i collected about 2-3 thousand copepods, and im expecting 25-50 larvae, i will go ahead and feed them. hopefully they, along with bbs will be able to make the frozen rots look enticing.

even as nutritionaly potent as copepods are, 2-3 thousand split up for 20+ clowns isn't gonna cut it...right?

no hatch last night.

and i had my dates wrong, they are 8 days old tonight.

all that are not duds have silver eyes today, some have had for 3 days.

i guess it will be another late night...go to ed at 3, wake up for school at 5.:(
 
You could always turn off the lights a couple hours early and get them to hatch a few hours early.

I was thinking of this. the problem is the tank is in the living room, and my family likes to watch tv with the lights on. if it turn the tank lights off, their is still a lo of ambient lighting.

it also got me wondering, could egg development e sped up with a 8 hour on 8 hour off cycle? make the days 1/3 shorter
 
I always had a really hard time staying up waiting for them to hatch too. My tank is also in the living room area, separating the dining area.

I had a female that would lay every 12 days and the eggs normally hatched on the 8th night or some would hatch the 9th. I used to stay up really late too, until I was feeling sleep deprived. I ended up shutting the kitchen/dining area lights out and all tank lights were shut off at 11:00 pm. I made sure I turned off all power heads/pumps etc. at the same time. I then went around and collected all the things I would need for the collection (flashlight, container, scoop and or 1/2 inch siphon hose) and put them near the tank. I draped a dark blanket over the top of the tank making sure I covered the area the eggs were in. If I had to, I wrapped other dark towels around the tank as well. Twenty minutes later I would lift an edge of the blanket/towel back and peer in with the flashlight to see if there were any babies. Try not to shine the light at where the eggs are laid but shine it at the top of the water and see if you see anything swimming towards it. They usually travel to the bottom of the tank along the sand right after they are born, if it's dark but will travel up to the light.

Hopefully this will work for you so you don't have to stay up so late!
 
Hey, I got a better idea. Get the clowns to lay the eggs on a flower pot or tile. Wait until you can see the eyes of the fry, then move them to another tank, drink a beer, go to bed, & wake up to a tank full of babies.Life would be so much easier, & this really works!
 
Getting them to lay on a tile or pot is optimal. I used to cover my display in like 5 or 6 towels to block out the light around the tank. It is a pain, but it worked well.

yeah. when your anticipating a spawn thats a great idea. mine hadn't done the deed sinse i moved two years ago.

and im 16, maybe u wanna change that to fresca :lol:

i wound up doing the blanket idea before checking here . it worked great.

2 hours of waiting and checking every 15-20 minutes and i have one baby. (and i found him at 35 minutes in)

but he's realy neat. surprising how alert and spry he is. (is it a he yet, or do i need to wait until he matures more?)

just on a side note, i dont know when i feel stupider, while leaning off the side of a floating dock straining for zooplankton, or sitting under a blanket looking for baby clown fish.

im wondering, my flashlight is realy dimmed (i put 11 napkins over it), however i checked 3-4 times on the eggs. do you guys think that that could have disrupted hatchings?

anyway time for some :sleep:
 
well...

the lone clownfish is definately eating the frozen rotifers!

this morning i checked the eggs, and half the nest hatched. i guess they did it after the two hours is stayed up looking for them :rollface:
 
the one was still alive when i last checked at about 9.

however presently their are so many little fry i would have no way of pointing him out!

i would estimate around 25-30, and their are 9 eggs yet to hatch!

they are much faster and harder to catch than i thought they would be...i need to invest in one of chads snaggers.

anyway, now with so many i will need to be feeding frozen rots for sure, so we sha'll see what happens.

btw, im wondering, how do you guys manage to get so many in a small containor? i filled my 1 gallon glass jar tothe top, and i barely have any larvae lol. I've scene jars filled with 300. are you guys pipetting out water realy slowly in between transfers DT to larval tank?

maybe i just need some practice.

now my next hurdle is my family vacation i forgot.

I am going away for sunday morning, and returning late monday night.

i was thinking of a drip loop with food, but how would i keep the dead rots fresh? no chance of a baby sitter...any ideas?
 
well, so far only one casualty... i think.

its neat how all the tiny zooplankton is gone (which is why im certain that the fish that are alive must be eating the froven rots) but the larger adults are still swimming around.

theirs at least 3 chaetognaths, some large pods, porcelain crab larvae, etc.

im gonna start feeding bbs tommorow, have it hatching tonight.

the fish will be 5-4 days old by then.

btw, seeing as they are eating frozen already, should i use NHBBS or just a frozen product?

i will be gone for 3 days, and 2 nights, i think i am just going to load the tank up with zooplankton from the ocean and hope it is enough. its gonna take me a while to collect though, maybe i will make a quick diy plankton tow.

oh and the clowns are starting to clean the area off for more eggs :spin3:
 
So long as they are big enough to eat the NHBBS, it will have the advantage of being live till eaten. Less dead stuff polluting the bottom ;)

Good luck with your vacation. If you get enough live plankton, you should make out OK. When you get back, get a nice rotifer culture started for that next batch :D

yeah, i think im gonna get some live phyto going first, although these guys are making it on the frozen ones now. if i had someone that my parents trusted with the keys, they would just feed them that for me while i was gone.
